A bunch of us left to AvidRO, but most of us quit. This is an entirely new jper trying to get people interested again, I guess.

I'll warn you now, its not worth it. Even for the nostalgia. It wears off fast, and you'll remember why you quit. Personally I recommend Aion, or Tera.

I only stopped playing because we didn't have enough people to do anything significant, and some others got busy. There wasn't much to do so I lost interest. Can't speak for the others but I imagine that it's a similar story.

if we could magically get a full guild of active players (with limited alts) I'd be up for starting but nobody aside from the same handful of people seem willing to stay committed. Everyone else just quits within a week.

Do you mean something like WoE? You best go to the /vg/ thread and guild for that. You don't need more than 2-3 people for mvping or grinding together, random pvp can also be done with a small group. Most pve content can be done with just a handful. Small groups (2-3, 4 max) are also far easier to coordinate and more fun to play in than a huge group where everyone has their own needs and goals and cliques and varying gear, skill and ro experience. I also believe the average ro playing /jp/sie is more suited to small groups. They "lose interest" because they get intimidated, anxious and afraid due to the number of people joining in the beginning. Being alone in a large group is also a big demoralizing hit, especially when people are invited to things and they aren't; /jp/sies aren't known for their ability to stand out and take the spotlight. This problem still exists in a small group but it's easier to join in if there aren't any others.

Full guilds likely aren't ever going to work for /jp/. Even /vg/ has trouble maintaining a large, active playerbase. All I'd ever want is a friend or two playing with me. We could conquer the world if we tried. RO isn't like modern mmos where you're forced to play with others to accomplish anything, you can gain ridiculous power by yourself through gear and consumables.

In closing, I believe that if /jp/ really didn't care for the game they wouldn't keep coming and going after the first server.

If you're talking about when we tried playing on the official Classic server last Summer when it first opened up, I can personally attest to that.
For the others, I think that is exactly what happened.

For me, the nostalgia didn't wear off that fast, but I was certainly reminded of why I quit and didn't last longer than just over a month.

Most servers are full of bots so you will never recreate the good old times.
Just let it rest in peace.

Unless you're heavily custom, don't listen to players and change/add things because people pressure you for it. Ever. Have a clear idea and stick to it, don't pander to people.

There is nothing more frustrating than joining a server based on what it advertises only to find out they've added all these awful features because players pressured the admins. All the time I see big guilds from a previous server wanting feature x because they're used to it and it's a convenience, and threaten to leave and wipe out half the server if the GM doesn't give in. It's disgusting.

Sometimes it's just innocent requests like "Oi Mr GM, can you please add a costume version of X hat on the shop?", and there isn't any reason not to do it. Though sometimes they'll ask for outrageous things, like "Please disable PvP in X map, I always get killed there". What's the point of a PK server if you're not constantly in fear of dying?

The worst part is when they ask for things you cannot give them. They ask me almost everyday for me to implement Rebels(Gunsliner 2nd class), but the data for their skills just isn't available. I was able to gather enough information about the Rebel weapons to make the items, though.

iRO isn't pay to win at all. Everything you can get from the cashshop is tradeable. It's not like it's impossible to play as a non payer.

Hard to say, there's a large variety in private servers and official servers do things their own way as well.

But over all, I'd start with private servers just because the vast majority has increased experience rates,
so you level up/find useful loot much faster. The primary complaint Ragnarok always get is that it's extremely grindy.
And it really is.

So by playing on a private server, you don't have to endure that crap, but you still need to put in some effort of course.

The drawback of private servers is that there's less players, which not just affects economy (and drama) but makes it
hard to find a party or guild that actually suits you and have members that shares your interests.

But by playing with say, /jp/, that problem works itself out as well. Plus we only play as cute girls (this is one important
tip to beginners often failed to be mentioned, the selected gender of your account is the gender all your characters will be too,
because South Korea early in the early 2000's)

Don't think so. But you can change your accounts gender (note that this changes all your current and future characters' gender).

On private servers, you can just use the control panel to do this, while the official servers offer it as a pay service.

I've stopped playing just when they implemented third jobs. How much has changed? No need for an entire change log, just the significant details in summary.

Quite a lot, there's a huge difference between Renewal and vanilla RO.

In my short experience with it, I'd summarize it as an attempt to modernize/simplify/streamline RO. I don't like it personally
and view it as some strange, cheap attempt to widen the audience for a game over a decade old while alienating their old players.

Level cap is now 150, stats are 120.
Formulas using them and the properties of stats are VERY different.
Magic weapons actually add mATK now and equipping shields reduce aspd.
Experience penalties introduced based on your relation to monster level (you need to be close to their level or you get close to nothing).
Cast time now has a two components, a fixed portion and a variable portion. The fixed (20% of original cast time)
portion is very hard to reduce, while the variable portion is reduced easily by DEX/INT/gear/skills/etc.
In other words instant casting as it existed in the past with 150 dex is gone.
Monster stats/aggro/spawns have changed here and there.
A streamlined quest chain called The Eden Group has been added, which basically points you were you need to
grind mobs appropriate level via kill quests and gives you a equipment and experience rewards for doing these.

I think that's it. And of course, there's more content like gears, monsters, towns/maps, etc.
