I'd say it's better than the alternatives. Whatever happened in Japan somewhere in the past with increase of competitiveness in society, is now happening elsewhere, but instead of those affected focusing their efforts on doing something creative, it has taken the path of people getting as passive or antisocially agressive as possible. Otaku are mostly harmless, and the related industry actually makes money.

I don't know what you're talking about.

I've been living in Japan for a decent while and start my new job in Tokyo later this year. Just entering as a normal foreign employee would feel too easy mode so I'm growing out my hair, doing voice training and plan on joining as a trap. It'll be interesting to see how that goes.
