Anyone else feel that having new music you really like is a huge factor in getting yourself to draw? It happened to me twice, where I started drawing way more after putting together a new playlist of songs. It also felt like exercising every day made it much easier for me to deal with the stressful part of drawing things that were difficult for me.

Did I say he didn't need anatomy and should completely ignore it? No I didn't, so don't overinterpret my words, dicknose. He just shouldn't start with thinking about how to correct anatomy when his drawing lacks in more basic concepts such as gesture and perspective. Since you ignored that part of my post you probably have no idea what they are.

As I've seen it usually people who've been drawing anime poorly their whole life who start wanting to improve always turn to anatomy first because they believe anatomical details would improve their static, lifeless drawings. Then they usually end up with even more static and lumpy chickenscratch because they have no idea how shit works. On another note there aren't any legitimate figure drawing books out there that start with anatomy first. If you actually cracked one open you'll see that they usually start with gesture and building forms in 3d space and how they interact with each other which also takes perspective into account. Only after you're comfortable with doing that could you start studying anatomy in confidence as the next step to improve your figure drawing.

Can't believe some idiot actually misinterpreted my post to mean to ignore anatomy completely, wow. Just impressively ignorant.

Constructing things is extremely hard if you can't conceptualize 3D space in your head, and practicing basic forms like cubes and spheres in perspective is the best way to really get this concept in your head (aside from doing still lives).

If you can't imagine a joint in 3D space, it's pointless drawing them since you're just copying down lines.

The ppi count doesn't matter when you do digital only. Pixelsize is physicaly determined by your screen and the size of the image by the amount of pixels.
ppi are for calculating the dpi when you print.
That's why you could also use a giant image with low ppi for printing a small image with high dpi.

In Photoshop, you can enlarge the image dimensions by increasing the ppi value.

I guess this is one of the main things that causes clueless people to:
1) ...confuse dpi (dots per inch) with ppi (pixels per inch).
2) ...think that ppi itself determines the actual size of the digital image. That is not true, but the automatic resampling is normally checked on in Photoshop which adjusts the image dimensions proportionally.

it's like liking something, and then finding a job that requires you to do it. at first you'll think "awesome, i get to do what i love and make money!", but later you'll be so sick of it you won't even want to do it for pleasure, since doing it for business will kill your will to do it at all.

That makes sense, no wonder professional artists always eventually hate what they do (not).

You either love it or you don't. Usually the reason that gets most people into drawing is the high off the easy praise and attention they get from their shitty anime drawings. Others get into drawing not for the fame and fortune like the former but because they genuinely enjoy it. So if you're the type looking for quick n easy praise and attention you won't get any while studying and doing hard work with no "attention reward" for a long time will burn you out.

So there's a solution if you're the former, either slog your way through the improvement phase and don't give up no matter how much your mind thinks the work to reward ratio is disproportionate compared to what you got before or stop drawing and look for another avenue to satisfy your neediness.

Burnout depends almost entirely on the person. Some are prone to it and need to take measured steps. Others can go like the energizer bunny.

Ultimately, work needs to be done at a steady pace, I agree. But don't overdo it to thepoint where you dread having to work every single day just to meet irrational self-imposed deadlines or whatever

If you use the pen tool simply as a replacement for the pencil tool, you are using it very wrong.

The pen tool should be used to define the outline for the lines.
Each actual line is represented as a filled-in polygon, with the curves from the line tool to give the line the desired shape, and with that there is more room for customization than any bloated brush addon.

If you vectorize a simple uncolored drawing in illustrator and then zoom in on one of the lines, that's what I'm talking about.

Seriously though, the pen tool is godly, and you really ought to use it correctly and to it's full potential.

There's a lot of unearthly beautiful and sophisticated Touhou art around and I don't want to just half-ass anything: it has to be special, in some way. I once wanted to do something homaging the danmaku visual concept, but I'm nowhere near technically to do it any justice; same happens with Miku, for example: I thought about drawing her as Hoffman's Olympia, Mucha style, but I still don't think I can pull it on. I haven't entirely figured out what to do myself but here are a few things that help me at least sometimes.

Setting goals that are achievable for you but keep you on your toes (draw x amount of something for y timeframe).

Just imagine that it's for something also helps sometimes. Like, that scenery will be in a VN althrough you know it never will.

Another thing is to practice what bothers you while doing something. Say you want to draw cute girl drinking tea and you notice you have no clue how to draw sitting girls. Pause your initial plan and study some sitting girls. That practice becomes easier since it's for something in reach instead of that vague "I want to become a better artist" goal.

And something I've noticed is that when I start the day lazy I accomplish nothing while when I do some tasks early that productivity carries over to other stuff as well.

I hope something of this is of help to someone.

I draw because I like to draw, that's it. It's nice to be able to put your ideas on paper too. To draw only for money would be ridiculous, there's much better ways to get money.

A little too blurry but, otherwise, not bad at all! Colors are nice and I like that you're going for dreamy landscapes (in that sense, even the incidental crooking gives the entire thing a little more character). If you exploit that well (say, like in Yume Nikki) and together with your otaku/Imageboard culture references, it can turn into a very interesting doujin game.

Seeing well-known artists or artists I like making serious errors in their work makes me a little happy sometimes.
Witnessing those I consider good making mistakes gives me hope, thinking I may not be a lost case. Is that normal or am I just being an asshole?

>> No.11961988

>>11961949
I don't think that makes you an asshole. Althrough I'm not sure what you mean with
>Witnessing those I consider good making mistakes gives me hope

Seeing horrible mistakes that even a beginner can avoid from good artists makes me mad. I'm thinking of confusing left and right hand or feet. Sometimes even in poses where it's obvious at first glance. Really destroys an otherway good image for me. But I don't think you mean these kind of mistakes.

>> No.11962500

Yeah, I was talking about misplacement of the eyes, too small feet or too big a waist... Things that depend on perpective sometimes.

And the hope thing, I meant that seeing them make those faults makes me feel comforted since I am not the only one having such problems.

You're right though, when comes down to things like what you mentioned, it's more of a nuisance.
And in cases like the Shingeki no Kyojin manga, it's seriously ridiculous.

This and contrast among many things are isuses I have, I'm not really good at painting.
Most of the game will be inside a mansion actually, so not many dreamy landscapes. There's going to be a few rooms that lead to places like that picture.
