Hi, I work on Koiken Otome.

To be clear, we removed the one accused of using machine translation from our team. I don't read moon runes, but we do have competent translators that went through and edited all the lines that he did. You can safely disregard anyone who claims that our patch is a MT, because they clearly haven't read it yet.

I'm not gonna say that our patch isn't a steaming pile of shit though. That is an entirely subjective opinion, and it's pointless to try and argue against that.

Because the guy who supposedly translated most of it flat out said he uses machine translation and clearly could not write in English. The lines they posted and said "how does this look?" were full of translation errors.

And the people they claim who know Japanese, saw these two things above, and decided they wanted to join.

So their argument is basically "We have people who are totally fluent in Japanese who didn't mind putting their work alongside the deranged rantings of a moron and who didn't see anything wrong with grossly mistranslated lines."

Here's a good argument. Because their 'translators' have maintained a consistent speed the entire time, even while supposedly discarding and redoing every one of his lines as they claim. And their 'retranslation' is even faster than Ixrec.

Which do you think is more probable, that they're the god children they claim, or that they're lying?

What makes me amazed more than the whole machine TL drama is how would someone want to gather a bunch of people who are (at least supposedly) skilled in japanese and make them translate a game that no one gives a shit whatsoever. At least White Album 2 and Yosuga no Sora actually have people who want to play. No matter how good this translation is, this game will be forgotten soon because literally no one cares about it. I bet there will be more people discussing Cannonball than this. Maybe if people who have enough patience to translate a kusoge like Koiken Otome put effort into games that people actually want to play, the TL scene would be much better off.

This. It sort of sad to me in a way that people are putting effort to work on games that most people will refer to as "moe harem crap", even though it's their own time they're investing and not mine. Not many will sincerely enjoy the fruit of what they did.

Then again, I don't think there are much decent games released recently that isn't considerably difficult to translate either.

What's the point of translating a forgettable game almost no one is interested in giving a shot? Most of the people who actually like moege know the language already. Cudder here. I mean, FH4JP. Flyable Heart has been completely retranslated by the Professor of Japanese at Harvard and is now a perfect translation. You can get the updated patch at ReTrans Inc's site at the same place as before.

This new patch is what's valid. I don't see anybody posting examples from it, so you can't say it's machine translated anymore.

I just read through some of the Koiken Otome patch with the original Japanese game open next to it. The translators are obviously beginners at both Japanese and translating. It's your typical, low-quality fan translation, riddled with minor errors and awkward phrasing. But for a mediocre game like Koiken Otome, I don't think anyone is going to mind too much, given that it's at least readable. That's assuming the part I read is representative of the entire script, of course.

Basically, I would never have signed off on it if I were their TLC or editor, but then I probably have higher standards than their target audience.

See Derpigreg there? He's a 'translator' for both Cocoro Function and Walkure Romanze. He was a proponent for the guy who got kicked off Koiken Otome and supposedly doing TLC for him. He's posted on Fuwanovel that he only (supposedly) understands basic Japanese and needs a dictionary, ie, he probably only (thinks he) knows some standard phrases from anime.

So pick. He uses machine translation, he doesn't care if others us machine translation (not even edited to workable English), or he can't tell the difference between machine translation and actual knowledge.

Yes, but you have to remember that languages are like monopolies, and Japan is really the only country that speaks Japanese. English, Spanish etc are world wide languages that you can find people speaking on a number of continents. Chinese is already spoken by the most people in the world and once China removes the One Child Policy I am sure it will sky rocket, and with the population of China skyrocketing most likely there will be more Chinese immigrants thus spreading the language further. On the other hand, you have Japan which has a declining birth rate and a country that will probably be speaking mostly English within 200 years.

It's a shame, because as I've said before, I'm sure at least a considerable amount of people would give Rebirth Colony a try. It has a lot of sci-fi elements, and the west loves that. Since people here loves VNs with horror elements like Higurashi, superpowers and battles, Shinigami no Testament would at least gather some appreciation. Why don't people try translating some Eushully games too? Considering how famous Kamidori was, surely a lot of people would give Soukoku no Arterial a try (although I kinda doubt anyone would pick that up since >50 hours).
Now, I'm not really thinking of the quality of these titles here, even though I liked them, but rather the themes they involve. The atmosphere, the plot, the OST, that kind of thing.
Your average EOP doesn't want to read about cute girls in a cute high school fighting with swords, or moege with one or two elements that make it different. He likes shit like Fate/Stay Night, Muv Luv, G-senjou no Maou, Majikoi, Higurashi, Umineko, Ever17, etc. Picking up a random 2013 title and deciding to translate it just looks like a bad idea for me.

Stuff like that. Sometimes I muse about translating a game I particularly enjoyed, but then I take a glance at the relevant threads on Hongfire, Anime-Sharing, Fuwanovel, etc. and instantly lose all motivation.

The stupidity of some of these EOPs is staggering. I have a hard time grasping how some translators can dedicate so much unrewarded time and effort towards a project, all the while knowing that their target audience is primarily composed of barely-literate retards.

Well, the people who don't suck and just enjoy VNs don't write on Hongfire, Fuwanovel, or Animesuki or any of that, so your seeing the worst part of the VN crowd.

Sadly, they probably do make up the majority but-- most people suck anyways. If you're translating something, you're going to bring it over to everyone, even the decent quiet people who do not type stupid beta male smiley faces.

So, please consider that peasants are everywhere but there are good people reading these things who aren't complete idiots.

I don't know about that. I read the full retranslation patch by George Henry Shaft and there wasn't that much different about it.

To be honest, some of Ixrec's translation resonated a bit more emotionally, particularly the rooftop confession scene and the question of if there is even one happy ending.

George Henry Shaft's is much more useful for analysis of themes and getting the overall story, but the emotional impact of the Ixrec tl is much better.

And if you want to try to convince me that George Henry Shaft translation is also bad-- then I don't really know what to say. It's clear that the guy loves the work, knows Japanese, and gave it his all, so it's hard for me to believe his translation is bad.

You know the biggest issue about Ixrec and other translators who try to translate works famous for having a decent prose? They've been made by actual writers. Regardless if you think they're "shit" or they're bad at it, it's still considered by most people that it's not easy to read their works. You can't just throw out a guy in college who's still learning japanese to translate Cross Channel or Steampunk titles.

>> No.11953381

>>11953343
It's not whether or not they're difficult to read that makes them difficult to translate. It has more to do with the writing style. The steampunk games, for instance, have really simple text for the most part, but sakurai just has a weird writing style that is very different from pretty much anything you'll find in modern english and didn't come across at all in Ixrec's translations of sharnoth or inganock. Also, even if you don't care about that, there were mistranslations and mistransliterations all over the place. I haven't looked at his translation of cross channel, but I don't want to try to imagine how badly he managed to fuck that up.
