Depends on the model. Most kinks were quickly worked out on all production models.

So poorly designed the mention of "Tiger" caused dread in allied troops
>poorly-manufactured
No
>Hitler-dick-compensating
Well, can't argue with that one

>>11925107
Except they weren't. They were actually pretty bad. So bad they withdrew them from Korea and used older M4A3E8s instead, and got the Patton up to the front lines as fast as possible.

>> No.11925262

>>11925234
>unreliable
Panther's final drives lasted about 90mi (see postwar French testing). The tank also enjoyed lighting itself on fire and the transmisison destroyed itself if driven hard. More Tiger IIs were lost to mechanical failures then enemy fire (not that the armor was impenetrable US 76 and Brit 17pdr guns easily knocked it out)

>poorly designed
Front drive sprockets in every tank means every tank is a foot or so higher than it needs to be, and takes up additional space in the hull. The TIger may have been scary, but that does not excuse 1930s armor shape and transmission on a 1940s tank. The Panther lacked a panoramic sight for the gunner, so he was effectively blind and needed to be walked onto target by the TC, a process which took on average 30 seconds.

>poorly manufactured
German armor metallurgy was shit for the whole war. Plates cracked, splintered, and spalled instead of spreading and stretching as properly-hardened armor does. The Panther's engine fires were never fixed and the fuel lines leaked.

If you insist I'll post sources but I don't feel like spending half an hour digging them up. Also, if my previous experience with Nazi armor fetishists online is indicative, then you will call any source I post BS and cite inflated kill claims and anecdotal evidence.

>> No.11925317

>>11925262
The Panther got more reliable over time. D had a lot of problems, including a badly designed mantlet that had a tendency to deflect fire down into the driver's compartment. A fixed some issues, and G was really good.

The frontal armor was adequate for all but the largest caliber allied AT, and the 75 L70 could defeat any tank in allied service at any point in the war.

If these tanks were so bad, why did the Russians go to great lengths to recover them and press them into service despite being fed tons of lend lease and shitting out tens of thousands more T34s?

As for the Tiger II, it was extremely overloaded. It worked better as a mobile pillbox than a true tank. The 88 L71 was monstrous, by far the best gun of the war. As for the American 76 "easily" knocking it out, you're not talking from the front. HVAP for the 76 was rated at 139mm penetration at 500m. That's not enough to get through the front turret or the upper hull. 17 pounder using APDS could do it with a good shot at 500m. It was also carried in limited quantities.

>> No.11925337

>>11925317
>more reliable over time
Why were the straight-cut gears in the final drive never fixed? Is 150km average final drive life considered reliable?

>armor
In theory, but in practice it was improperly hardened and generally shit. I could post sources out the ass, including Guderian himself calling German armor quality inferior to Russian, but the spam filter is catching them.

Other problems with the Panther include side armor thin enough to be penetrated by obsolete AT rifles (of which the Reds had millions), a stupidly overloaded chassis, the aforementioned blindness of the gunner, and the inability to turn the turret on a grade. If you want sources, give me an email and I'll send you the links.

Also, let's see a citation of the Red Army "going to great lengths" to capture Panthers.

Oh, and one more thing: the Panther's main gun fired an HE shell with a lighter filler and thus weaker bursting power than the shells of the 75/76mm Shermans. Note that this is during a war where 80% of shells fired were HE and the main role of tanks was infantry support (where good HE is required), not tank-on-tank combat.

The Germans had plenty of other vehicles for that. I'm not saying it was a good thing but the Panther was designed with tank on tank combat in mind. The Sherman wasn't, tank on tank combat went against US doctrine at the time.

Where did I say they desired it more than any other tank? I'm saying they went to lengths to get them up and running and fielding them in companies. Are you going to try and nitpick every little thing and put words in my mouth?

>> No.11925428

>>11925405
Show me where it says the Panther was designed specifically for tank-on-tank combat. Even if we believe that, it's still a terrible decision. The tank's designers apparently forgot that the deciding factor in a tank-on-tank engagement is not armor or armament (though I doubt spall-happy, brittle steel is an advantage), but who gets off the first shot. A Panther, with its overloaded chassis and transmission, is bad at that. Additionally, if the "medium" Panther is so amazing, how did the Slavic untermenschen design a heavy tank (IS) that weighs only a ton or two more, yet is better armored AND better-armed (in both the infantry support and AT role)?

>>11925412

> why did the Russians go to great lengths to recover them and press them into service despite being fed tons of lend lease and shitting out tens of thousands more T34s?

I'll give you that. But is a poorly-designed (see other posts), poorly-made (see other posts), unreliable (see other posts) tank that is relatively ineffective at the job that tanks are supposed to do a great tank? I don't believe so. I've said all I have to say, and I've got class tomorrow, so I'm heading off.
