Okay, first time to /jp/ here, and the only thing I know about AKB is that I stumbled upon the song Heavy Rotation and really liked it (more so for the video but the song was catchy).

What is the deal with the "Team" format? Is Team A considered more prestigious than the others? And since they work with members of other groups, why even have teams? Is this just some weird Japanese thing?

Sorry for being so ignorant, I just know literally nothing about Japan except I went shopping in Aoyama when I stayed there and that Mobile Suit Gundam sucked after Turn-A.

the teams exist because each team performs on a given day at the theaters. Team USED to be the most prestigious but because of team shuffles it's just another team now (except it has Takamina, the ''leader'' of all 48 groups).

also, basically AKB and the other groups work in 2 fields: The singles and the theater performances. In the theater performances, that's where teams matter. On a given day it will either be team A, K, B or 4 performing (or the kenkyuusei - trainees)

when it comes to singles, that's when around 16 girls (the most there's been in a single is 36 - Sayonars Crawl) are chosen to perform the single - they are the senbatsu. The AKB senbatsu can include girls from SKE, NMB and HKT, but it doesn't go the other way round.

There are also some girls who are part of two teams from two different groups. For example, Matsui Jurina, who used to be exclusively team S from SKE, is now also part of team K in AKB

its popularity contest to get your favorite girl in the first letter of the group or option 2 is to get all your favorite girls to get all in one team. typically highest rank girls based on fans voting get in the first team and less highly ranked in the 2nd and 3rd

Currently, right now at the moment the leader of Team S from SKE48 is Jurina Matsui who is the leader of all the girls in the AKB48 family who is currently at the end of the month going to be moving from Team S to one of the teams of AKB48 (my money is Team A )

NMB and HKT are reserved for girls who are not popular or too young to be on tv or magazines or anywhere marketable like photobooks

Well, to give you an idea of the current group, since Heavy Rotation was a few years ago, recent singles/songs from each group include:

AKB - Heart Ereki, Koi Suru Fortune Cookie
SKE - Sansei Kawaii, Utsukushii Inazuma
NMB - Kamonegix, Bokura no Eureka
HKT - Melon Juice, Wink wa Sankai

For all intents and purposes, just think of them right now as a way to keep track of the general structure of the group. A team's song selection and general way of performing has a certain flavor to it that's different from the others. Think of it like a bunch of departments under the same company. You'll work with people from other departments, but day-to-day will be with your own department. The more important you are, the more time you spend out of department doing general things. Think of the sister groups as a bit more independent, but they still come together for television and big projects and for the main singles. Don't worry too much because you'll pick it up as you go along.

I think the picture many people have of the group would best be characterized by 10-27 so muck around a bit in that area. Oh, and #32 is pretty relevant to current events too.

Trying to keep it on topic, not like there's much point, but HKT's lineup looks fairly standard. I wasn't expecting Chori to get in at all so I'm glad about that. Akiyoshi getting back in is great too. Mio is alright but I really don't understand why they insist on pushing her into the center spot.

I don't think there's any reason for her to quit. Center position isn't the be all and end all for Haruppi in HKT. After Melon Juice she seems to have come to terms with her position and what she can do for the group. She's really changed a lot since the "I hate myself" G+ post.
