I was wondering how many denpa musician mean to make denpa songs.
about my case, necomimi☆spacenoid is a band that plays extreamly pop music, but denpanosekai said my songs are denpa.
in Japan, there held denkyun which is an event of denpa song, and they invited Kashiwagi Ruzarin for talk show, and he said when he wrote Miko Miko Nurse, he didnt mean to write denpa song.

Some moesong is denpa. Think of one of those Venn diagrams.

I do think Nekomimi Mode is denpa due to the direction of moe (i.e. denpa-kei moe). If you've seen the OP you've noticed the extreme fetishization and disconnect of signs (one episode just has cat ears where the girl should be). I think that "disconnect" is one of the principle attributes of denpa. Actually, if you've seen the show, it's very involuted and quite denpa.

This image works.

From what I've seen, they come from completely different things but ultimately converge in the sense that many moe songs are also denpa songs because they share traits (self-referencing, comical, parodying, over-the-top, chaotic, fetishistic, creepy, whatever), but not always. Not all moe songs are denpa songs, and not all denpa songs are moe songs.

The stuff certain eroge and anime openings are made up of, i think. Main focus is on the moe qualities of the fictional characters in the song.

Something like ななひら or Shaking Pink, I guess. It's easier to say what it isn't. For one, anything without a character singing I would not count toward moesong.

Try getting good music skills making songs using Vocaloid, then go look for vocalists in Nicovideo/Nicolive. Many would be happy to have a musician to compose for them; although it seems harder to find vocalists willing to sing denpa, for obvious reasons.

what do you mean "red denpa"?
for my case, it was very hard to look for human vocalist.
I used Japanese SNS "mixi" and I open my songs at myspace, then some people told me that they want to sing in my songs.
I met every vocalist and go to karaoke and have some talk and chose which vocalist is good for us.
unfortunately , my songs wasnt liked at NICONICO, so I chose the complicated way.

and it depends on which language do you want to be sung English or Japanese.

Actually it has a lot of similar elements. Nonsense lyrics, earworm qualities, sometimes features suggestive or explicit lyrics dressed up as sweet/cute. You can also consider it to be simultaneously an exaggeration of the qualities of pop music and embracing those qualities at the same time, something denpa does with different elements.

Of course it's not actually denpa since you really can't have denpa without the Japanese subculture elements it plays on. But it does have a lot of similarities.

also if you search "Japan proxy service" you can find many sites to buy from tora no ana and other sites.

going to events, making lists, contacting buyers, etc etc, actually adds up to a lot of work. i would never want to run a proxy service. just buying stuff for friends at events was enough to drive me crazy. i admire doujincore's hard work for such a low price.

'tru' denpa doesn't exist today. even if someone today made a track like 冬もマシンガン it would only be an attempt to copy this style, so it's not really 'true' denpa.

this is the problem with many of forms of art that derive from an underground culture, it even happened with the 'moe' phenomena in anime. you can't really find much unironic 'moe' anymore like you could in the late 90s/early 2000s, because everything that tries to be moe is basing itself upon standards of that which came before. the same is true for denpa, so called 'denpa' (moe pop) groups/artists just try and recreate UNDER17, Toromi or MOSAIC.WAV, they making a copy based on preconcieved notions of denpa music. I will defend MOSAIC to the end, but I'd be lying to myself if I said they don't do the same thing today with many of their moege OPs. in fact, there is a big audible contrast in MOSAIC.WAVs work for this reason, they are tied between making the music they feel (denpa) and the music they are expected to make ('denpa'). The denpa they make is almost unrecognizably different from the denpa people expect.

akihabara is poisoned by commercialism and is also acting as a shell of its former self in order to meet the expectations of those who visit it with preconceived notions, therefore it is no longer (or at least, currently no longer) a good basis for something like denpa culture to flourish on - this is why denpa has stagnated into moe pop.

Denpa songs can't exist without denpa culture.

Someone above made an allusion to Psychedelic music, this is an interesting choice to compare. Psychedelic Rock of the 60s cannot be recreated today, you can take all of the musical elements and make a song that sounds pitch-perfect like 60s psychedelia, but it will never be the same. The reason being is that the collective whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's influenced by the drugs and culture of that time, it cannot be recreated today because we do not face the same challenges as the people who made that music did. Any attempt to copy it will never get the true 'psychedelia', it will always be tainted by preconceived notions of what a '60s psychedelic' track should sound like.

Without the culture, there is no music. It's not the same thing, merely a shell of its former self.

>Denpa by its very nature is extremely hard to pin down anyway
I agree, and I ask again: Are denpa songs so tied to akiba culture? There are examples of denpa songs seemingly not about akiba at all, and as seen in for example
here http://www.geocities.jp/rotter/essay/moesong.htm
or here http://www.paradisearmy.com/doujin/pasok_denpa_song.htm
it probably doesn't even spawns in akiba or in its culture in the first place.

Denpa culture might be centralized in Akihabara, but even in the beginning it was not limited to Akiba. The trouble is with the lists you're posting is that they are saying 'It sounds like denpa, so it must be denpa'. They are no different from anyone on 4chan saying that The Beatles are denpa because their lyrics didn't make sense on this one album. I don't know why you think a Japanese Geocities link legitimizes an opinion.

You're asking for sources, I am a source. I've been to Akihabara numerous times - I was there when denpa culture was still hugely underground and spoken to people who were part of that very scene at the time it happened. I've also spoken to numerous denpa artists (UNDER17, Mi-ko, Toromi, Otsuki etc.) and gotten their views.

If I write all this in Japanese and post it on 2ch or Geocities, does it then become more legitimate? No, it doesn't.

>The only way for us, as foreigners, to learn about it today is to search for whatever is documented

No, the best way for you as foreigners to learn about it today is to track down some people who were in that scene and ask them about it. There's no point looking for 'documented' sources because such little of it is documented in the first place.

>I'm asking for external sources precisely because an anonymous imageboard isn't trustworthy

Nowhere is more trustworthy than anywhere else. What are you expecting to find? Some kind of book written about denpa culture? As far as I'm aware such a thing does not exist and even if it does there's no guarantee that the person who wrote it knows anything more than someone like yourself.

It is true that you can't go back to the 60s and make psychedelic rock in that specific cultural context, but in today's context, where psychedelic drugs are available, used, and have a culture around them, you can still make psychedelic music with the characteristics that compose psychedelia.

>> No.11932749

>>11932733

He is wrong on some, yes.

Almost every type of music is born from a subculture of sorts. When the subculture vanishes, the music is no longer. You can call it by the same name, but it is no longer the same. It could be argued that psychedelic rock no longer exists because the traits which defined it no longer exist in our society. In the case of psychedelic rock, this is actually true.

Equally in the case of denpa, the same can be said. Without the culture, there is no denpa music. Only music trying to be denpa.

It's a very easy concept, you just need to stop thinking that musical elements alone define a genre, because they do not.

>> No.11932766

>>11932749
>you just need to stop thinking that musical elements alone define a genre
I never said that. I'm also talking about subculture. I think the psychedelic culture hasn't died, it has just changed due to cultural change as you said, but it still exists. The only way for the psychedelic culture to die is to psychedelic drugs to disappear, which won't happen.

Likewise, I'd like to ask know why you think the denpa culture doesn't exist anymore, and exactly which traits that defined it don't exist in our society anymore. I don't live in Japan so I don't know how much Akiba has changed, but I'm sure you can mention it to me so I can get it, if you don't mind of course.

I'm not really sure how else to explain how denpa culture doesn't exist anymore without having you seen it before it died.

Imagine if all the goths vanished from the face of the earth, people might still listen to gothic music but it doesn't mean gothic culture is still alive. It's the same for denpa culture - people go and see denpa musicians perform but it doesn't mean they are part of the culture, just spectators.

yes. you can define parts of it much like you can document parts of it, but they make no sense without the context of the collective whole.

there are lots of people who claim to be experts on denpa songs, but they misunderstand the greater implications of the culture.

Unlike what >>11932836 says, I don't think it's as airy-fairy as 'everyone is right and nobody is wrong' but on the same token, I don't like the idea of outright saying 'This is true denpa' for a few reasons: Firstly, it only seeks to provide a platform for 'X is trudenpa' which will then of course be misinterpreted later on: ("Y sounds like X, so Y must be trudenpa style"). Secondly, especially when you talk about bands then the lines blur. MOSAIC.WAV were definitely through and through denpa at one point, but can the same be said now? Not really. I'm not saying they got worse, but I think their interests became divided. As of recent years they make 70% of music which is imitation denpa - 'denpa' that is expected of them and the other 30% of the music they make is harder to define. Is it really just an evolution of 'denpa' or something new entirely?

>> No.11932875

I have my doubts whether this subculture of yours has ever existed in the first place. Certainly, the type of music discussed in these threads was born from otaku culture and feeds on otaku culture, so it's certainly tied to a specific subculture. But "denpa" and "denpa-kei" are just terms used to refer to people with certain behavioral traits (space cases, tinfoil hatters and such) not a specific subculture. Those who believe in the Photon Belt and those who think the government is conspiring with aliens don't necessarily have any culture in common.

Though that's all irrelevant because those kinds of people don't have anything to do with denpa music in the first place. Or else people trying to summon UFOs by playing eroge songs on top of ley lines would be a relatively common occurrence.

It's not fair to dismiss everything and just say "you had to be there man". If no one is able to explain what denpa, denpa culture, denpa-kei and denpa song are, then this discussion will never end and nothing will come out of it. Well I think it is, actually. Because you really did have to be there. People like: >>11932875 will debate otherwise because they weren't there and don't like the feeling that they are missing out on something.

And to answer: >>11932875 yes actually the two things you are talking about are actually very tightly wound. And as for 'Playing eroge songs on top of leylines' it's funny you should mention that because amusingly enough the cult following of Sister Princess in denpa culture is exactly what you're saying never happened. I'm not sure about leylines but there were certainly some much weirder things going on. There's a very good reason as to why denpa culture and denpa songs are closely related.

First though, I'd like to explain a bit about the 'true denpa' point using MOSAIC.WAV as an example as everyone is familiar with them and it illustrates the point quite well.

And first of all, before I forget. A couple of things to remember: The first ever denpa song had nothing to do with otaku culture but was sung by an 'otaku culture' musician who has been a well known face in akihabara for years.

Secondly about the culture, just because it is elusive does not mean it didn't exist. Think of it like 4chan; 2004 4chan culture was very different from how it is now and anyone who was around at the time will tell you that, but if you were to look on paper it doesn't look like much has changed - memes still exist, the posting system is similar, everyone is anonymous, the board is anime-centric but if you lived through it, you'd know that the differences in cultures between then and now are monumental. If you want to understand denpa culture, you need to understand this nuance; if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck - it's not necessarily a duck. That's not all I have to say on these two, just preparing you with that.

If you can't explain yourself and add anything constructive so we can all understand and enjoy denpa better together (like showing us the way to old and meaningful works or anything helpful) instead of ranting about how the culture is dead and there's no way we can understand it like you do, then please don't waste your time.

But you misunderstand, I was there and I still am there, denpa will truly never die as long as we keep it in our hearts.

Uh the guy is being reasonable, but you say he rants and call him a cunt? And the line you quoted is a perfect example of where people's irrational anger comes from. Separate your ego from denpa and relax. I would like to read more personally.

>And as for 'Playing eroge songs on top of leylines' it's funny you should mention that because amusingly enough the cult following of Sister Princess in denpa culture is exactly what you're saying never happened
There are loonies in every part of the population. What matters how it ties into denpa music. Even something like Panda-san Youchien feels far too intentional to be simply a case of nutjobs creating nutjob music as a natural result of being nutjobs. And early MOSAIC.WAV certainly isn't.

>The first ever denpa song had nothing to do with otaku culture but was sung by an 'otaku culture' musician who has been a well known face in akihabara for years.
Isn't that a rather controversial statement considering that what is considered the "first ever" denpa song itself is debated? Also, was there any reason you couldn't mention a name? I'm all for people doing their own research, but that research has to start somewhere.

Is it? I don't think it is. Of course I'm talking about Otsuki Kenji of KING SHOW fame, who wrote 妄想の男 which I think most people accept is the first denpa song.

>And early MOSAIC.WAV certainly isn't

You'd be wrong there, although early early MOSAIC.WAV is actually part of a splinter culture which emerged on the Japanese internet in the late 90s/early 2000s but often verges on denpa culture.

Because he isn't adding anything helpful or meaningful, and he acted like a cunt to someone who just expressed his doubts, dismissing the argument with some attempt at psychological analysis. If we go by what he says, we should just find ourselves another hobby because there's no way we'll able to enjoy denpa, nor find anything documented about it unless we build a time machine.
