It's been too long since the last Retro-Thread.
We cannot continue like this /jp/!

Post your favourite music/photos/goods and other amazing things from the '70s, '80s and '90s
I'll start with some music.

I am looking for the whole Rebecca discography or atleast the Best of Best album but to no avail so far. Anyone has it?

Lets go!

Personal taste I guess, anon.
I prefer the more natural look over the modern overly doll looking faces.
I also heavily love the saturated colours and overall colour sheme of '80s and '70s photography.
Of course there are still a lot of beautiful woman toady, not going to argue.

Happens to a lot of different artists from that time.
Thats actually is what made me start collecting/buying/downloading what I can in case of not being able to view any video anymore someday.

I just strongly recommend you guys build up a decent music library and get everything you like listening to from youtube, radio etc.
I have a bad feeling that work from artists, especially music is not going to be freely viewable for that much longer.

Hopefully some kind souls are going to post some more fine music that I don't know of yet, thats one reason I opened the thread, heh.

In terms of music: Nakamori akina.

Have you any movie recommendations that meet my description? I can dish out a few here.

Gung Ho
Tokyo Pop
Black Rain
Shogun
Karate Kid (Yes he's Chinese, but its still Japanese themed and other Japanese actors/actresses are in it)
The Red Crow & The Ghost Ship (The Jim Henson Company worked with a Japanese studio in creating a puppetry movie. There is at this time no source for torrents nor vhs copy except in Japan. I'll try to find it in Japan.)
Unfortunately these are the only ones I have off the top of my head. There was this one college made film on netflix, once, where a Japanese girl wants a green card so she marries an American-Japanese boy, but things fall apart because he is so immature. In the end you are lead to believe he'll go after her and she almost asks him to truly fall in love with her. Im sad I can't remember the movie name.

Old film cameras are cheap as fuck nowadays. You can get a decent one and some nice lenses for like $150.

>> No.11938357

>>11875962
Those old cameras are still amazing. When things went digital, some aspects of cameras actually became worse. For instance, those old cameras almost always had a pentaprism instead of a pentamirror. The pentaprism is an actual crystal that flips and reverses the image, and the pentamirror is just mirrors arranged to do the same thing, but compared to a prism the mirrors are way more dim. The prism is what gives cameras the usual triangular hump in front of the viewfinder.

And until recently it was nearly impossible to find a digital camera without an anti-aliasing filter. The filter is basically a piece of glass to eliminate moire in images, caused by the arrangement of pixels on the sensor. The glass eliminates/lessens moire, but you lose a bit of sharpness in the end. Film is organic and random, so there was no need for any sort of filter. Nikon has a few cameras without the filter, so you still get moire in rare cases, and Fuji has an alternative pixel layout for their sensors that eliminates moire.

Canon also had a really interesting autofocus system on their later 35mm SLRs. Instead of cycling through the focus points or hoping the camera guesses what you want to focus on (as you have to do with cameras now), the AF system would look at where your eye was looking in the viewfinder and focus accordingly. I never used it but I've heard mixed things about it. Some people said it didn't work with glasses, some said it worked amazingly well. Canon dropped it from their DSLRs because of battery power issues.

Speaking of batteries, older SLRs either don't need batteries, or have batteries that last for months or years. For some cameras the battery was only needed for the metering system, so you could still use the camera if the battery died. Some cameras that used electronic shutters had one 'emergency' shutter speed that was entirely mechanical for use if the battery died. Neat stuff.

>> No.11938431

>>11938357
Also, the lenses. Good god, older lenses are a pleasure to use. The focus rings are so smooth and the aperture rings are so nice and clicky. They had more accurate distance scales too, and had depth of field scales as well.

Going back to viewfinders, the older ones were bigger and brighter as well. The mirror in modern cameras is often a bit transparent because the AF sensor is usually behind/below the mirror. When older cameras had no AF the mirrors could be actual mirrors, so the image shown in the viewfinder was nice and bright, especially with a bright/fast/large aperture lens. The image size of the viewfinder was often bigger too, to help with manually focusing and they often had manual focusing aids. With an older camera if you put a slower lens on the camera, looked through the viewfinder, and then put on a faster lens and looked through the viewfinder again, the image would actually be brighter for the brighter lens and depth of field would be more accurately displayed for the two lenses in the viewfinder. Nowadays focusing screens actually aren't very bright and are fixed to show around f/4, even with a faster lens. That means if you put any lens faster than f/4 on the camera, you won't notice a difference in the viewfinder. The image won't be brighter, and the depth of field won't be accurately shown in the viewfinder. However, if you put a lens slower than f/4 on there, you'll notice it get darker. Why this change was made, I have no idea. Manufacturers did start coming out with slower lenses around the same time, so maybe they figured nobody would notice or something. I don't know, I'm not an engineer. There's a nice market for aftermarket focusing screens so some people from eBay go out and buy older cameras, cut the focusing screens to fit in modern DSLRs, and sell them.

Sorry if I'm rambling and sorry if these posts aren't very coherent. I'm a bit bored at the moment.

Less. I picked up a canon FTb + 50/1.8 for $25, got a 35/2.5 in that mount for free, a 70-210/4.5-5.6 for free, Canon AT-1 + 50/1.8 and Motor Drive for $35, ect.

You can pick up cameras and lenses cheap if you hit up flea markets and yard sales, you just have to make sure everything works and is clean before you buy anything.

Old Canons use a different mount than the newer Canons, so the old FD mount is basically a dead system and usually pretty cheap. It's really once you get outside the range of normal lenses(50/1.8, 35/2.8, 70-200/4-5.6) that everyone would have had that the price starts to kick up. Ultrawides and fisheyes still demand $500+, as do ultra fast lenses like the 50/1.2.

Whatever you end up doing, just remember to have fun. Cameras are pretty neat, especially older ones. Here's a leaf shutter that I think looks pretty cool. Most old cameras are filled with cogs, springs, and various metal pieces and look a bit similar to this on the inside. Then there are 'newer' cameras with metering systems that have older style of thick wires running through certain areas, but they mostly are like this on the inside, with lots of tiny parts all working together.

Dear JP,

Don't forget Mrs Taeko Ohnuki because she's awesome. Her first albums are splendid but it's not easy to find old songs on youtube so here's a song from nowadays :

By the way, listen to this album of Rajie, this is a pure jewel :

I can't get the tags to work properly with foobar. In the folder it looks like all the filenames are fine and none of the japanese is messed up, but in foobar its just a bunch of ?????? in place of kanji

I've never had this problem before, I was thinking it might be because they are .flac but really I don't have any idea, would anyone know a solution to this? None of the stuff I found in google worked for me

had this happen a couple of times. Not much that you can do. If you have the language packet installed, which you probably have if kanjis/kanas are displayed correctly elsewhere, the only option left is to manually rename it.

Give this a try. Great tunes.

Foobar isn't reading the tags properly because the tags aren't formatted properly for Foobar. I experienced this with the TLMC. You need to download a plugin for foobar that lets you change the character encoding of the tags, and then you need to set it to batch edit the tags character encodings of the jap musics

I never really left the 90s, I still watch Di Gi Charat routinely (I was born in the early 80s). All my room is full of Di Gi Charat/Nuku Nuku/Kero Kero Chime stuff. I wear plaid shirts tucked into baggy jeans, I have big circle glasses and a ponytail. I still run Slackware 3.3 and get Garfield comics sent to my mailbox every day.
