Can we have a rythm games thread?

I wanted to ask about IIDX 19. My local arcade just got one, and I want to learn how to play Beatmania, but I've never played one before.

I have some experience in Taiko, but obviously this doesn't transfer into other games. How many stars should I be playing?

I have some tips, though I doubt they'd be really useful

- don't neglect the turntable or use autoscratch
- use whatever fingers you need to hit keys, but try to keep it consistent. And it's probably better to start using your thumbs if you can.
- use high speed modifiers to read better and find that "invisible line" where your brain goes to press the note (versus the red line where the note is actually judged)
- I would use random too, since it prevents bad habits and gets you accustomed to dealing with everything, no matter how dumb (like 1234 chords)

if it's worth anything, my progression as a beginner was something like this:
1-3 = one day
4-5 = one week
6-9 = one month
10-11 = one year

but I'm definitely not a good player or anything. I trained on consoles--can't imagine having to go to an arcade to practice...

You should get into DDR (or alternative) rhythm-based games instead... for the exclusive reason that it gets you really good cardio while you're playing. And, despite popular opinion, there does exist a progression that takes you from 1-2 footer DDR to full-on real choreography-based dance.

Here's is the progressions steps (assuming you're a disgusting weak fat-ass with little athletic ability)

Day 1-3 = 1-2 footer (beginner mode) DDR
Day 4-7 = 2-3 footer (easy mode) DDR
Weeks 2-3 = 4-6 footer (normal mode) DDR
Week 4 - Week 8 = 7 - 8 footer (hard mode) DDR
Month 3 - Month 6 = 9 footer (e.g. healing vision, cartoon heroes) DDR
Month 7 - Month 12 = lite 10 footer (e.g. xephyr, sakura) DDR
Year 2 = Switch off of DDR to DanceMasters (or other computer vision-based dancing game)
Year 2, week 1 = easy mode
Weeks 2 - 4 = normal mode
Month 5 - 12 = hard mode
Year 3 = Switch off of DanceMasters to finding 踊ってみたvideos on either nico douga or youtube
Year 3, month 1-2 = easy cutesy-tier songs (e.g. happy synthesizer, Renai Circulation, platnium disco, etc.)
Month 3 - 6 = trickier ethnic/fun songs (e.g. 千本桜, paired wintry winds, bad end night, etc.)
month 7 - 12 = trickier pop/lock songs (e.g. Killer Lady, baby maniacs, 狂喜乱舞, Masked bitcH, etc.)
Year 4 = Begin incorporating break-dance elements into dance routines. Start mixing in strength training (in particular with your core) to achieve the balance necessary to pull off the various moves.

By this point, you should be in shape, agile, and pretty decent a dancer - a nice step away from the disgusting fat piece of shit you were before. Just be careful if you're American and male - all your friends will start thinking you're a massive cock-sucking faggot for having learned to dance.

>all your friends will start thinking you're a massive cock-sucking faggot for having learned to dance.
This has got me wondering: Why is it perfectly normal, acceptable and fine for an Asian American (or Asian anything) to dance on DDR machines, but completely abhorred and unthinkable for a white American to do the same?

Most of the time when I go to the arcade, a significant number of people on those machines are Asian males.

this is out-of-date and will not work. Tricoro on psun now requires a unique pcbid in the ea3-config file obtained from having an operator account on programmedsun.

The only way you'd be able to play is setting <pcbevent> to 0 and playing completely offline (no scores, unlock songs, etc). I even tried this once, but I still got an eamuse check fail.

I recommend finding a lincle/resortanthem hdd and putting in full unlock dlls (18 and 19 do not require eamuse).

If you really like the game then yes. DJDAO controllers are also the best.

The game is difficult to pick up and has a high learning curve with high skill ceiling. IIDX is a high maintenance music game that requires practice.

I would recommend trying the game at a local arcade if you can or even try using a keyboard. If you're familiar with other note based rhythm games, you'll definitely enjoy IIDX.

Never grab Desktop Arcade or KOC Japan, KOC US is still a good choice but I doubt you can learn difficult music using KOC.

Sows is dying because of their extreme policies when its comes to torrents. All games are over seeded a gazillions times so a new user has to wait about 6 weeks to build up enough bonus points to download any game data. People would rather hit and run than wait and I cant blame them.

Also you have the extreme crazies you mention who want to keep it a super secret club and go on crusades against anyone they suspect is a leecher, making a fool of themselves when they are proven wrong.

All you have left is a small group of idiots with their stupid injokes desperately trying to hang on to the sinking ship while being actively hostile to anyone from the outside.

This. I've had an account for years and I've rarely used it only to download some Bemani music CDs. Downloading an HDD rapes your ratio and you won't get it back unless you upload lots of shit or donate. This is the problem for new users since everything is extremely over seeded and regular users are competing with seed boxers they will only ever be able to upload a tiny fraction.

They need to double or quadruple the bonus point system. Bonus points is 24/7 seeding for six week for 10GB. Allow many more users in and promote the uploading and seeding of a diversity of non game content like soundtracks since there is no reason to come back once you have data.

I might have exaggerated my progress because it was a long time ago, but I do remember progressing very quickly with daily practice. It's nowhere near as difficult as playing a real instrument.

the main point I meant was that the spacing between levels isn't really balanced. The difference between a 7 and a 8 is absolutely nothing compared to 10 and 11.

I'm still only in the range of 3's to 4's. Hoping to get good before I look into a buying a controller or finding an arcade. Any protips for making LR2 crash less?

I use a controller and play standard 1 player I think. Turn table on the left.

I've been trying to start using my right pinky finger to hit the bottom right button but its killing my wrist and forearm for some reason. I'm really tall and have gigantic hands. Maybe I should just give up using my pinky and go back to using my ring finger for it.

Someone kiss my arm and make it feel better.

Do you play at the arcade or something? I think it depends at the angle of your arm. I only play at home sitting down so my arms are parallel to the panel. It makes my ring finger bend at a weird angle when I hit the 7 key, but using my pinky feels pretty comfortable

Man, why do all these rhythm games use buttons that are 25 bucks a piece? I'd like to build my own controller for something like pop'n, but I'm better off doing something like this stupid shit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYQ3KaB6fc8)) instead of paying the hundreds of dollars an arcade official pad would cost.

I've googled around but haven't seen anyone complaining about this particular issue. I was really hype to play after MAGfest, but then I got really busy and haven't had time to mess around with it. I've played bemani since ddr 3rd mix cs and 2DX 5th style cs. Used to go to eddie's site when it was drop0ut and shit. Community was pretty cool back in the day. I remember this tourney was the shit.

I hardly play bemani like I used to though. But back in the day I would help somebody find games and shit if they were looking. Anyway I ran into a few of those sows faggots at a con. I remember people used to share shit and be cool but they acted like it was some super secret club.

Anyway OP get into 2dx. It's the best rhythm game there is...also ddr and pop'n.

With the older machines, if you get an account and start playing step-up it will keep you in lower brackets for a while. Step up can be a good way to play different difficulties of songs without having to worry about failing out and you should take advantage of it.

Arcade UFO, it's crazy. They got Tricoro a few months ago but it had some hardware glitches (screen flickered, sound would randomly boost, etc) so they downgraded to Lincle until they could get it all worked out. Now it has all new parts and Spada, pretty good deal. $1.50 a set though.

Playstation pop'n games recognize the controller because it's always sending down, left and right as pressed. Right yellow is mapped to up, and the rest to the available buttons.

So first, you'd have to configure your adapter to read the D-pad as buttons instead of a POV hat.
