My city has a moonviewing festival at the local Japanese garden, but I've never been to it.

I've actually been to Sendai Tanabata Festival. It was smelly and so crowded you could barely walk. Local festivals are best.

There's a peach blossom festival in a week or two. It's free to get in and I would probably go if I knew it wouldn't be crowded. I bet it smells amazing.

I go to festivals everywhere for 4th of July, Autumn, and Winter. They're really nice and lots of fun. I live in the suburbs of a city. Anyone have any similar experiences? I realize this is just a troll thread, just curious though.

The festivals I've been too have been pretty good. Yeah, some drug use and even a little bit of pissing in the streets, but that's kind of the point of a celebration: to let loose. I've never seen any reason to actually be bothered by it though.

Pissing in the street might be the point of celebrations if you live in South Africa, but in civilized nations people celebrate by dressing up nicely and having wholesome fun with friends and family.

Small towns can have nice ones. The Clay Festival in my hometown was always nice. Lot of arty people came out to meet the miners. Fireworks, food stands, kids having fun but not being loud. Riverfest on the other side of the country is of the normal redneck "fair"

As a general rule: If there are carnies, then redneck. If its completely local, then you are fine. Unless you live in a city.

I took my Japanese girlfriend to the State fair when we went to my home town to visit. She was particularly amused by building full of advertisements that was paradoxically stuffed to the brim with people. That and the sand castles which to be fair were pretty nice.

Come up here to Japan's far north if you think they're all clean and cute.
Takeuchi - a town full of people that have been drinking since 11am builds a giant fuckoff bonfire and proceeds to beat the shit out of each other with long fuckoff bamboo poles. There are 3 rounds, and by round 3, most people say "fuck it" to the bamboo and just start fistfighting. If you're a foreigner, expect everybody and his dog to gang up on you. Until media attention forced them to add helmets and restrict participation to local residents, it was considered one of the top 3 most dangerous festivals in the world.

I dunno 'bout the south 2/3 of the country, but up here, the best thing about the festivals is that everyone gets drunk, everyone's actually fucking festive, the young people come home and exist for a while, and people aren't stuck up about being orderly. Being foreign, it's a double bonus because it's not all that uncommon that some drunk old man will walk up to you and offer you free sake or beer to drink just for the privilege of having your company for a bit.

The fact that it's NOT tidy is the best. It's one of the few times where Japan isn't afraid of its own shadow.

There are some festivals in the area with fun stuff you can participate in that don't require that, though. You can bring your dog to a festival that celebrates dogs. There's a festival where they'll light a bale of hay on fire and have you swing it around you on a rope. There's what I believe is the world's largest tug-of-war you can go for. That's another dangerous one, though. The rope is so huge and has so many people pulling on it, that several "anchor" guys have died by being crushed.

In japan a festival can be a family thing, even the penis festival is done in a tasteful way that wouldnt be traumatizing to younger folks.

In america the festivals are terrible and most are so full of general degeneracy. Some even bar minors from even showing up near the even.

Where I live they have a four day Greek festival and they sell things like fresh gyros, stuffed grape leaves, greek coffee, and greek pastries.
They also sell Ouzo and Greek beer, but everyone is pretty calm and no wild parties. If you just hate the fact that they sell alcohol, then you are just a no-fun faggot. Many Japanese festivals have alcohol present.

I live in the middle of nowhere and we have plenty of festivals. There's the Duct Tape festival, where people display what they've made out of duct tape, there are crafts for children, a scavenger hunt, some rides, food and drink

An apple festival, where we celebrate apple harvests and the start of school for kids. It has lots of apple-related foods, apple-anything pretty much. Fried apples, baked apples, apple pie, meat and apple dishes. There are games for kids, even a larping tournament, which is kind of weird.

As a kid I won a goldfish here.
