Why are Japanese festivals so cute and tidy while our festivals are dirty, filled with half naked people, sex, and rampant drug use?

If we tried to do something pretty like the Sendai Tanabata Festival then within an hour all of the paper would be rolled into joints and smoked, people would be drunk and having sex in hallways and bathroom stalls, everything would smell like urine because people would be pissing in the streets, and you would see people running around and screaming as they smoke crack.

The festivals I've been too have been pretty good. Yeah, some drug use and even a little bit of pissing in the streets, but that's kind of the point of a celebration: to let loose. I've never seen any reason to actually be bothered by it though.

Pissing in the street might be the point of celebrations if you live in South Africa, but in civilized nations people celebrate by dressing up nicely and having wholesome fun with friends and family.

>> No.11856920

Small towns can have nice ones. The Clay Festival in my hometown was always nice. Lot of arty people came out to meet the miners. Fireworks, food stands, kids having fun but not being loud. Riverfest on the other side of the country is of the normal redneck "fair"

>You think they should divert more manpower into catching public urinators?

It worked in New York with the broken windows policies and stop and frisk. The kinds of people who would piss in the streets are the same types of people who are almost always criminals in other aspects of their lives. It takes a special kind of filth to be able to piss in the middle of a public street.

Lock up all public urinators and the crime rate in drug dealing and assault would plummet. Good citizens don't piss in the streets, these people are no doubt criminals.

Takeuchi - a town full of people that have been drinking since 11am builds a giant fuckoff bonfire and proceeds to beat the shit out of each other with long fuckoff bamboo poles. There are 3 rounds, and by round 3, most people say "fuck it" to the bamboo and just start fistfighting. If you're a foreigner, expect everybody and his dog to gang up on you. Until media attention forced them to add helmets and restrict participation to local residents, it was considered one of the top 3 most dangerous festivals in the world.

I dunno 'bout the south 2/3 of the country, but up here, the best thing about the festivals is that everyone gets drunk, everyone's actually fucking festive, the young people come home and exist for a while, and people aren't stuck up about being orderly. Being foreign, it's a double bonus because it's not all that uncommon that some drunk old man will walk up to you and offer you free sake or beer to drink just for the privilege of having your company for a bit.

The fact that it's NOT tidy is the best. It's one of the few times where Japan isn't afraid of its own shadow.

Up here, these places would be slightly fucked if they couldn't bring people in to spend money during the festivals. When the festivals aren't going on, it's just school kids and old people.
The only thing is that participating in some festivals may require that you be a local resident. Or be on really good terms with the mayor or something. And by participate, I mean construct parade floats, dress up as an oni, sing naughty lyrics in an old Japanese dialect, etc.

In japan a festival can be a family thing, even the penis festival is done in a tasteful way that wouldnt be traumatizing to younger folks.

In america the festivals are terrible and most are so full of general degeneracy. Some even bar minors from even showing up near the even.
There is so much drug use and drinking, not to mention everyone thinks its okay to expose themselves or have sex publicly just because its a festival and they take it too far because america is so sexually repressed that any chance to "let loose" is taken to the most extreme degree.
Its also common that people disappear from festivals! Kidnappings and rapes happen at festivals because its crowded and its easy to get sepparated from the group.

Its terrible. You may show the penis festival and say "lel gaijin thinks japan has nice ckean festival" but the grossest japanese festival doesnt come close to how disgusting american festivals are.

Such a kind of festival isn't uncommon in Japan.

Edinburgh Christmas Festival is nice. An ice rink, a German market, a ferris wheel, choral choirs and other musicians.
I agree though, Western festivals are often little more than an excuse for others to get drunk and have sex.

I live in the middle of nowhere and we have plenty of festivals. There's the Duct Tape festival, where people display what they've made out of duct tape, there are crafts for children, a scavenger hunt, some rides, food and drink

An apple festival, where we celebrate apple harvests and the start of school for kids. It has lots of apple-related foods, apple-anything pretty much. Fried apples, baked apples, apple pie, meat and apple dishes. There are games for kids, even a larping tournament, which is kind of weird.

As a kid I won a goldfish here.

Opps, forgot a picture on that one.

We even have an international festival, celebrating the different backgrounds we've come from. Many people and groups have food stands, showing off their nationalities' best cuisine. Each group can enter a 'princess' who wears traditional dress, and there is a pageant where they elect one princess the queen, then there's a parade.

I usually wear my yukata, and the japanese vendors flirt with me and offer me free ramune

Sounds like any normal apple growing community. I think a lot of places have festivals like this based on what they grow.

What's with the shitposters thinking there's something wrong with penises? That's the kinda shit non-christian religions do.

No one's talked about those festivals where they run around in fundoshi either.
