-Be big and fit. Yakuza wont accept a gaijin who doesnt have any skills so if you arent built and know how to fight or look tough then you shouldnt bother, as most gaijin who join yakuza are put into "tough guy jobs" that require you to scare the shit out of people.

-know japanese. And i mean REALLY KNOW IT. Yakuza tend to use a lot of slang and they speak pretty fast which would be hard for a gaijin who isnt good at it. Not only that but you have to have a grasp on the subtlety of the language so you can tell what anyone is saying, even when their face is beaten in and its hard to heard them.

-Show complete respect. Being a low level guy means youre shit. Being a low level gaijin puts you at an even lower esteem. Which means you will get your efforts over looked, and treated pretty poorly unless you are very respectful and kind to your brothers or father. Dont be an ass kisser though.

-Be prepared to not move up. Yakuza have ties to right wing groups, ones which may not like gaijin and wont accept a gaijin into higher ranks, which means the most you'd become is a bouncer at a club or security at a soapland. Dont expect to become a honcho.

-You might be set up. They may ask you to commit a crime that requires a desposable man who will get arrested. They might pick the gaijin and if you arent put in jail, you'll be deported. This might happen when you work with drugs.

Stay safe.

The Yakuza are both legit and illegal. Their illegal activities include drug dealing (not all Yakuza clans do this), human trafficking (again, not all), prostitution, uncensored porn, extortion and fraud.

They only really exist because the government can use them as a tool to do their dirty work. They keep petty criminals under control and they basically run construction projects and developments. If a company is doing something they don't like, they buy enough shares in the company to gain a seat in the big shareholders meetings and basically use scare tactics on everyone with their presence.

They're surprisingly polite to foreigners, me and two friends had a good night out with some Yakuza guys in 2011. I nearly shit a brick because my friend was quite drunk and he just grabbed a drink off the bar and drank it thinking it was his. Along comes 2 guys in suits looking pissed and I was like "Oh shit, I'm really sorry let me buy you another, he didn't know it was yours" and before I could get any money out the guy in front put his arm around me and said "Ahhhh English drunks!" and started laughing.

The rest of the night was pretty cool, they were leading us to these shady places and each time we went down a side street or an alley I thought "This is it, this is where they kill us". I feel bad when I think about it because they were cool guys, we went to a few snooker places and we were offered drugs everywhere we went. I don't recall pending any money either, Tai (or Tee, his name escapes me but it was something like that) just told the barmen that we were with him and we basically got whatever we wanted.

I have another friend who went the year before and he said he got lost in Osaka and was approached by a heavily tattooed guy who spent nearly an hour with him helping him to get back to his hotel. Whether he was Yakuza or not isn't definite but still very helpful either way.

Yeah, I actually prefer their documentaries over normal Vice's. Nowadays I think I only watch Fresh Off The Boat off their normal channel, and the rare interesting documentary on something else.

Also, you would be hard-pressed to find any type of documentary on Yakuza nowadays. They explain it in the 2nd of the series, that any type of interaction with active members gets you in trouble with the law. Still, they show quite a few interesting sides of the Yakuza itself during the documentary. Only the first one is really about the right-wingers.

Samurai are supposed to grip their swords tightly with the middle, ring, and pinkie fingers and loosely with the thumb and index finger. By having the ends of their middle, ring, or pinkie fingers cut off a swordsman loses his grip and can no longer fight properly.

The Yakuza kept the finger cutting thing for symbolic reasons.

I read it, and I laughed when Adelstein couldn't figure out why the fuck Japanese folks would chew gum that made their teeth black. That kind of oversight leads me to believe that he very well could have misinterpreted a lot of shit. 'Alien Cop' was a bro, though, and overall the book is amusing.

I just got Kaplan's book on the Yakuza, but I haven't read it.
