Hmm, it was over a year ago but I loved the Arcades, Especially finding a Melty Blood Machine and a Fate Unlimited Machine. Best Arcade memory was holding a Tekken Machine against all commers for about 2 hours. I am just a regular everyday gamer but i consider doing so in Akihabara of all places to be a achievement. I also loved the UFO machines and scored quite a few figs on the cheap that way. Once i hit some of the back streets i found a hidden store that dealt in Touhou and 2ch things, which was amazing as most of the main strip was flavor of the season. Thou i did luck out and was at the MaouYuusha event at Gamers (Purely by accident.) Akihabara is defiantly my second favorite area of Tokyo after Harajuku.
Pic Related; found it in a random 4th floor shop, It was that or Reimu watch so i got the cooler one obviously.

I think it depends largely on your home university. I didn't have any problems getting into the program, though. I'd highly recommend it, the experience is really worthwhile.

But yeah, the prices are amazing here, especially with the yen being as weak as it is right now. That figure might run $50-60 back in the states, if you can find it. Possibly more. I am definitely planning to one from the same SAS line for myself (hopefully I can find Abdul or Chapter 3 Joseph..), and possibly a gunpla kit if I see a good price.

For retro stuff you need to go to Nakano Broadway, they might have what you are looking for. PC stuff is usually in the backstreet stores.

Don't shop in the main street stores, they usually have some what of high mark-up.

Go to Akiba on Mondays as there will be a lesser crowded stores and you'd get to buy stuff calmly.

Take a small note-pad and pen to write down the prices and stores where you find your stuff before buying. Doing this saved me at least $1,000 USD. You would want to buy something thats $40 then walk around to find it in some smaller shop for $30, not a big diff. but it saves A LOT!.

Music stuff, you might need to head to Harajuku, especialy on Sunday at Yoyogi-koen. Also lastly Shibuya on a friday or sunday.

I am Hispanic. I am not black, but am also discriminated against, sometimes in similar ways. However, the two are different, and while I am not discriminated against as heavily as many blacks are, there are also fewer positive connotations about "Hispanics". At least that is how I feel from my experience.

And, yes, while Japan has employed a small number of blacktors, they are almost always given the role "huge dumb black gaijin who doesn't know better." Their representation in the media here is incredibly racist.

public service warning: beware of pre-owned jojo figures at mandrake. the price was was cheap at 2625, but the joints are stiff and there are scuff marks. biggest problem is that there is a paint error (or the last owner was a idiot with a marker) on the best of the 3 heads which makes it look terrible. I wanted to try and find the greatest eroge store in Akihabara that I always visit when I'm in the area. Apparently its gone now unless I just have where I think it is mixed up. I was pretty sure it was down from where Mandarake is.

I was there (and in Japan in general) for the first time this September. I only had about 5 hours in Akiba in total though.

I blew $50 (and 2 hours) on a maid cafe (mostly on sake), bought the Japanese version of Persona 4 Golden and some LNs and manga, then met up with some friends from the program that brought me to Japan and had a beer at the Gundam café.

I wish I could have looked around longer, but almost everything closes before midnight. I would've thought they stayed open all night, what with being world famous and all.

Looking forward to returning after I get my scholarship in a couple of years.

And these days a "city of electronics" is about as impressive as a pile of dog shit. There's nothing in Akiba that a normie would be interested in that you can't find in any Yodobashi in Japan, not to mention a store in the west like Best Buy or even amazon.com. The prices aren't even good anymore, which was most of the draw for these people.

For the majority of tourists, Akiba is a quick walk-through at best as they quickly realize all this. Maybe they'll stop to gawk at some ecchi shit and then they'll be on their way, but even that is going to be ended by Mr. Abe soon enough.

I won't deny that the number of foreigners on the street is still high, but it'll drop as the district continues to decline and that's pretty meaningless anyway considering the gaijin level drops considerably as soon as you set foot in a store.

It doesn't help that my friend encouraged me every step of the way ("Don't you like this character? Buy this figure." "You like Touhou right? Look at all of these music CDs.")

The cherry on top was the maid cafe. There was a huge line of ultra otaku waiting to get inside (you know the kind, they have big backpacks with posters sticking out) and when we finally got in I couldn't believe the amount of effort the girls put into being moe. However, I think they were more taken aback by me, in that I talked to them like normal, non-maid human beings. You people are the normies. Being just another socially awkward and/or unemployed male geek does not make you special in any way. The entirety of 4chan and 2ch are full of such common, boring people.

Despite being someone relatively at the edge of society, I'm tired of the misuse of the word "normal" as a blanket term who doesn't the share the same issues as oneself. It's juvenile, and these kinds of communities that are meant to be for people simply drawn together by a love of a otaku culture become nestbeds of people seeking company with the same board topic-irrelevant afflictions. You're on the wrong site if you just want to be around people that claim to love Otaku culture. Go join Shrinemaiden or some other wapenese infested shithole where scum and pseudo-normies shitpost together in harmony, just as you want them to, rather than an elitist place like /jp/ where actual western otaku reside.

I would kind of like to take a trip to Japan but it'll have to wait at least two years until I have my Electrical Engineering degree and actually make decent pay.

How expensive is, let's say a one week trip? I'd like to see Akiba but also other stuff as well. I wouldn't really spend more than 1-2 days max in Akiba. What are other good locations to visit or events to see?

Also, can I go without any knowledge of Japanese or would it wise to learn at least a bit of the language? I would obviously learn some customs and cultural stuff so I could be polite. The last image I want to cast is that of a rude foreigner. On the flip side I don't want to look like a weeb Japanophile either. I just kind of want to naturally blend into the culture like it's second nature.

Ideally I'd take a friend so I look like less of an idiot by comparison while staying in the country. I know the perfect guy because he's a bro and not a weeb but he's a bit poor so I might have to spot him cash unfortunately.

You should check out Mandarake,Toranoana (it's got a few branches; IIRC branch C was solely for BL stuff so beware), Melonbooks and K-Books.
m's tower is worth a visit of course.

Maid cafes are, in general, a complete waste of money. I went to maidreamin'; they charged a 1000 yen entrance fee and you had to buy at least two items.

I didn't manage to go to Book-Off but I think it should be good.

All in all, just walk around Akiba and discover places for yourself. I spent two whole days there and didn't even manage to explore out of the main street.

I agree. Having visited Japan 7 times in the last 10 years, it's clearly declining on both the 'weeaboo' and electronics front.

10 years ago I could still be guaranteed a bargain on esoteric camera or computer goods. The last 3-4 years the first thing I do on seeing new goodies is look up a price on eBay, Amazon or my local PC shop and inevitably the prices are almost exactly the same barring exchange rate. The selection is still far better than you'll find in any Fry's or Best Buy though.

And yes, most normals quickly realize this too, you'll see them up and down Chuo-dori but almost never in the back alleys now because big-boxes like Sofmap have driven the smaller retailers away. As I've said before, the redevelopment of the few remaining landmark 1950s buildings such as Radio Kaikan have really been the last nail in the coffin of the old 'geek' Akihabara for both technology and anime. In ~5 years it'll be as cold and sterile as Shinjuku with nothing but department stores for consumer goods.

generally speaking, no. Japan is not a bargaining country for buying and selling like say, China or Arab countries. But if you're buying a shitton of goods - several hundred dollars worth- especially used like doujinshi at K-Books or Toranoana or goods at Mandarake, you might ask about a volume discount..
