There has been quite an increase in the number of translations of japanese rpg maker horror games (mainly from requests at Uboachan). I have not seen any thread about those and it's about time they reach wider popularity.

Definitely related. Vgperson always does an excellent job. It is a pity that some developers have especifically asked for their games not to be translated.

Vgperson seems to be a bit more popular, though, as there can be seen some threads about translations around, see, for example,

When the first one is finished, depending on how succesful it is, some people might pick it up. Sometimes the translator asks for opinions how would certain dialogues be translated, and certain dialogues are completely crazy, like repeating the same word several times and writing in really strange speech patterns. No wonder the author is mentally ill. Also, he said it's about 75~80% translated.

Vgperson avoided mentioning the title or the author due to respect, but she stated the translation being finished by the time the cease and desist letter arrived.

I only played Ballad of Akemi so far and while it has some enjoyable elements, the triggers in that game are the worst I have ever seen. Most progress is by finding the next spot where usually a small jump scare is so that the next trigger can be activated. This includes having to wait in a room 10 seconds or going on the way to the dark part of the forest, where she says she has a bad feeling then choose "stop" so that you can finally take the other route, because unless you do that you can't progress. That you progress through triggers instead of riddles mostly pulls the game down big.

Thanks for the TL's! Currently into Forest of Drizzling Rain, which looks promising.

As a side note, you may want to bring in an editor to smooth these translations; it's been really stiff in English thus far. For example, things like:
"Ah, the passengers have gotten too few, that it is already out of service"
->
"Oh, lately there've been so few people coming that the bus has stopped running altogether".

"But somehow a feeling of hurt starts"
->
"which has become painful to look at".

The general goal should be to convey the context and concepts over a more literal sense of the words; it should flow naturally for a native speaker. Try actually speaking the lines aloud to determine if they 'feel natural'. It's ok to deviate a little from the literal text as long as it conveys the idea correctly (there are some cultural gaps after all, and some ideas don't translate directly.)

But, in general, keep at it!

The translations will get better as the translators gain more experience as well.

The good part is that now any user with a limited knowledge of RPG maker can download the partial English translation of WOLF RPG maker at:
http://www.rpgrevolution.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=58125

And follow the guide from vgperson at:

>Even if I want to read them, my field of vision is really poor.
>An amazing number of books. Do they keep in charge of all of them?
>The humans of this area, have been disappearing off somewhere.
>I am a human of this town. I at least know the backways.
>The ones in this town... If I can be introduced to your family, there's no worry, is there.
>I am especially all alone.
>Is that so... sorry for my discourtesy.

It's 'awkwardly phrased' to the point where it -actually- interferes with the story. And not in the prude 'TL is never' better, but in the actual sense of 'this isn't even remotely scary because of how awful the dialogue is'.

More importantly, he isn't -trying- to correct it. He continues spewing these 'translations' out in a matter of days, either choosing to not seek out help or refusing to acknowledge how bad it is.

So, no, it's bad, and it's not appreciated by persons actually fluent in either language.

I guess it could be "even though I want to read them, my field of vision is really poor."

>An amazing number of books. Do they keep in charge of all of them?

I guess it could be "An amazing number of books. Do they keep maintenance over all of them?"

>>The humans of this area, have been disappearing off somewhere.
Just two prepositions to be fixed here, I suppose: "the humans in this area, have bene disappearing off two somewhere."

>>I am a human of this town. I at least know the backways.
A minor word-ordering fix, I suppose. "I am a human of this town. At least I know the backways.

>>The ones in this town... If I can be introduced to your family, there's no worry, is there.
Could perhaps be, "At least for the ones in town right now... if I can be introduced to your family, that wouldn't be too troublesome, right?"

>>I am especially all alone.
Perhaps "I am especially lonesome."

>>Is that so... sorry for my discourtesy.

I'd have to see the source Japanese first (and I realize you're being ironic), but an off-the-cusp translation:

>Even if I want to read them, my field of vision is really poor.
"It's too dark to read." (these lines were said in a dark room).

>An amazing number of books. Do they keep in charge of all of them?
An amazing number of books. Do they really take care of all of them? ('keep in charge' isn't actually a phrase.)

>The humans of this area, have been disappearing off somewhere.
"The people of this town have been disappearing." (Translating 人 as 'human' instead of 'person' is a textbook example of someone not knowing English).

>The ones in this town... If I can be introduced to your family, there's no worry, is there.
Fixing this would require rewriting most of the lines around it. The concept of an 'outsider' doesn't work quite the same way in Western society as it does in Japanese.

>Is that so... sorry for my discourtesy.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know." (-The- stereotypical phrase used when accidentally reminding someone of the death of a loved one).

>Fixing this would require rewriting most of the lines around it. The concept of an 'outsider' doesn't work quite the same way in Western society as it does in Japanese.
I don't see what this has to do with the idea of "outsider." The exact line is

この町の方なんですよね……。\|身内の方がいらっしゃるなら、心配になりませんか。

It's simply just asking Satomi about introducing Mikoto to her family (that happen to be in town). I don't see what this has to do with any "outsider" concept.

>> No.11820773

>>11820735

As for translating 人 to human, (by the way, it used 人間 here, not 人, but let's ignore that for now), it's because 人 can be seen to be very often referring to "humans" and not all "people" (for example, to the exclusion of supernatural non-human people). Although I suppose "people" here would be more appropriate even if it is 人間.

// だが、目の前の少女はこの町の人間だ。
http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Air:SEEN0180

I don't see why your game had to use awkward translation like human in that particular line.

>> No.11820858

>>11820773
>I don't see what this has to do with any "outsider" concept
The Japanese line may not (now that I've seen it, although I was really referring to that entire conversation, not just the line), but the English one does. In English, the line is effectively saying 'everything'll be ok if you introduce me to your family', meaning that she's an 'outsider' and that's causing problems.
What was the TL trying to convey? That she was scared, looking for other people? That she didn't believe what the lady was saying? That she thought the incident was caused by not belonging to the town? It's not clear in English.

>>11820767
Well, what did she -actually- say? I'm inferring the original text from what's written in the game.

However, remember that lines do not need to be 'the same length' in both languages; it is often the case that something which takes a lot of words to express in English takes very few in Japanese, and vice versa.

Is she acting like a 'typical schoolgirl'? If so, then she should say lines that reflect a 'typical schoolgirl'. A scared little girl? Then she needs to sound like one. In English.

A TL needs to translate the concepts over the literal text. This is what the respected TLs, such as vgperson, do. They translate the idea in a way that conveys it to the EOP audience and isn't garbled by nuances or poor phrasing.

>> No.11820879

>>11820801

Yes, I understood why you choose 'human', but that's not the issue. The issue is that Shintoism isn't ingrained into Western society. The distinction between 'people' and 'humans' in the supernatural sense is almost completely lost on an English reader, because they don't think about it in that way.

There may be a way to phrase it to include a supernatural distinction, but using 'human' doesn't convey that on it's own. Not in English at any rate.

Reading the scene for myself, it seems like it should have read like this.
I’m not sure where the entire greet and meet with the family came from.

美琴
「あの、おばさんにはご家族の方とかいらっしゃるんですか?

Mikoto:
Uhm, miss, is your family with you?

美琴
「この町の方なんですよね……。身内の方がいらっしゃるなら、心配になりませんか。

Mikoto:
“You look like a local of this town,
if your family's here, aren't you worried?”

保坂 里美
「……ならないね。

Hosoka Satomi:
"... I'm not worried."

Mikoto:
"...Huh?"

保坂 里美
「私はとっくに独り身だよ。旦那とは数年前に離婚。子供はあの世行きさ。

Hosoka Satomi:
“I'm unmarried.
I divorced my husband quite a few years ago, and my children have already passed away since.”

Also, when it comes to the awkwardness of the 'human of this town' line, I'd localize the line as:

“I grew up in this village.
… I know a little something about the back alleys.”

>>11821348
Although it is true that "keep in charge" doesn't exactly fit the meaning, I think that you are thinking two hard on the idea that there is an absolute "right" or "wrong" when it comes to something like diction. If you are talking about usage of English, there is nothing incorrect syntactically there and one always has a degree of liberty when choosing which words to use, and it depends on what kind of meaning, tone, and mood one is going after. To that effect, one might also use non-standard words in a non-standard manner, and it works as long as one is aware of its effects. Of course, in this particular case, you are correct that "keep in charge" does not exactly have the meaning that the sentence was going after, it does not mean any mistake in using the English language. In this case, it is merely a mistake in what is being expressed, not how it is expressed, and thus is more of a semantic error rather than a language error. One must not confuse these two things with each other.

With the Japanese? Possibly not (don't have the Japanese source to reference). The English? Completely unnatural and awkward. It should be something closer to:

"....I only meant to hide for a little while, venting about that stupid bureaucrat."

"But, before I knew it, I got lost and passed out... and woke up here."

If tosiaki doesn't see the original TL's as awkward and unnatural he needs to work on his English.

>> No.11821487

>>11821464
First, I see nothing wrong with starting out with "In the beginning." Furthermore, you got rid of "in the forest," which I see as quite problematic. Also, "venting" could work, but I don't see it as much different from the phrase "making spiteful remarks." Also, "government official" is simply what that person is.

For the second phrase, I do think that "somehow" does work. Furthermore, "I got lost and passed out" is not what this is about. It's about "not being able to remember anything sometime in the middle" so you missed the point of that with the way you changed it. Furthermore, "when I came to..." makes it more apparent that it's about suddenly waking up In fact, this particular phrase was used in Silent Hill:

"When I came to, everyone was gone."

If you think that the word choices in Silent Hill had bad English, then I don't know what kind of bad English you're talking about.

……最初は、ちょっと森で隠れてあの役人に当てつけてやろうと思っただけ。

“... At first, all I thought of doing was hiding in the forest for a bit to vent about that official.”

The main thing here is that ‘In the beginning’ makes it sound like the start of a storybook and isn’t something someone would say while self-narrating.

I used the word “official” in this case because 役人 can mean administrator, bureaucrat, or official. I personally haven’t played the game, so I don’t know his exact occupation.

でも、どうしてか途中から何も覚えてなくて。気がついたら、こんな森の奥に……。

“But, somewhere along the way, I blacked out and when I came to, I was deep inside the forest…”

The two offenders here are the ‘in the middle’ which is not something any Western English speaker says when talking about their own physical movements. Most say ‘en route’, ‘during’ or ‘along the way’, etc. Furthermore, tosiaki's translation completely omits the key factor of this ENTIRE sentence: The fact she ended up DEEP in the forest (森の奥) after blacking out.

Well, let me put it this way:

I passed some of the games off to some EOPs I know (ones who enjoyed games like Ib and TWH). They played them for ~10 minutes; long enough to laugh, and then languish, at how awful the English was.

So he needed to understand that his TL needed some work. It looks like we got that across to him, so there's not much more for me to say. Hopefully he improves and we get good games, and I can pass them on to people who will enjoy them.

>> No.11824610

>>11824444

I'm happy that he's open to criticism, but all of these games have, I'm not going to mince words here, atrocious English that actually influences how the game's story is received by the average player. The interesting factor here is that tosiaki clearly knows English, but for some odd reason this does not apply to the games he releases. It's not just the English, either, there's also cases where he mistranslates Japanese that I learned within my first semester. This baffles my mind and is part of the reason why I think he needs to be under the wing of a senior translator so he can learn some of the intricacies of stuff he misreads. Kind of like how professional companies have interns under senior translators so that the latter can pick up on their mistakes and train them up on it. My point is that there is a certain amount of slack that I can cut people. No one's perfect and I am willing to cut someone slack on a mistranslated line or two and a couple of misspellings, even commercial grade translations have these, but the releases we're presented have been unplayable for both me and all my friends I've shown them to. Tosiaki's heart is in the right place trying to get these games out to people, but they're so unpolished that they're unplayable.

For example, aside from the mistranslations and awkward English, I feel none of the characters presented have any personality. The translations of the text feel sterile and awkward. I feel it’s insulting to the work the Japanese authors have put into their games. This kills a game for me due to the fact that I PLAY games FOR the characters. This is yet another issue I have with these games. I load up the Japanese version and lo and behold, they do, in fact, have personalities and their own quirks in the Japanese. Just, for some reason, it wasn't brought over in English. All in all, the games need more polish and I want him to be aware of that.

>> No.11824614

>>11824444

One of my issues with tosiaki is that in the span of two months, he has released approximately 8 games that are filled with mistranslations, typos, awkwardly phrased sentences, and still didn't even bother to completely translate all of the Japanese. The final boss of Paranormal Syndrome was left completely in Japanese! That's incredibly lazy!

I'd rather have tosiaki release 1 or 2 games in a month that fixes all of these problem above. Rather than his current pace with him churning out 3 to 4 bad games with tons of errors that needed to be fixed.

I'm sorry, but someone was stupid enough to call him the "new upcoming and rising vgperson". What a joke! He's nowhere close to vgperson's quality!

>I feel none of the characters presented have any personality. The translations of the text feel sterile and awkward.
An important point is that putting "personality" into the characters' speech is not an easy manner. One has a great tendency to impose one's own manner of speech into whatever one writes, and therefore to "put on" a different personality is a whole different manner than simply translating things.

From here on, in order to possibly get feedback on translations before making them public, I first will be releasing the translations as a publicly editable spreadsheet on Google documents (Japanese and translated English side-by-side) so that anyone who wants to look at it can offer feedback (mainly, by inputting text in one of the cells to the side to offer suggestions for improvements).

You're trying to lash out at someone unrelated, and I'm not sure if you misunderstood this "Anon-geko" to be Tosiaki (myself), but if you are assuming as such, I'd just like to point out that this assumption is mistaken. I am sure that those who want to collaborate with your translations will find means to do it, as you are offering many ways to deal with them.

Tosiaki, I am the person who started the thread (and who normally updates the thread with new announcements and stuff).

I just want to thank you again for your patience when dealing with all of us. I didn't expect that the thread would so thoroughly discuss your work. I am happy to see that your works are gaining popularity, but I am even happier to see how well you are managing criticism and all the efforts you are making to cater for those who criticize your work.

The concept of respectability is being discussed a lot here. I think that Tosiaki's (and, by extension, Vi2222's) translations are VERY respectable. They are doing what they can within their capability, and it is thanks to that that we are being able to discuss the outcomes.

We can criticize a work because there is a work to criticize in the first place.

Putting up a wiki is very demanding and time consuming. So are the Let's play videos.

I have just joined the wiki, but since my Japanese level of JLPT5 is next to useless in this case and I am not a native English speaker, my contributions can just resort to spell proofing and checking that the grammar structures are basically correct.

Decisions regarding character quirks, speech mannerisms, puns, plays on words, etc are sadly over my head.

I hope that more capable volunteers step up and join us as well!

Ps: I will keep on updating the thread with news on the scene, starting a new one once this thread reaches its limit

Also, this might come as a spoiler to some of you, but tumblr people have been in /jp/ all along, even if some now feel compelled to use tripcodes to show bonds of solidarity with the translators.

As long as they give me new content, I don't care where they come from. Everybody is welcome if they making material that I am interested in more accessible to me. This is the land where "taking it easy" is our motto.

The new translation by Vgperson is out!

http://vgperson.tumblr.com/post/74514586295/the-gray-garden

The Gray Garden: a world where angels and demons live in harmony.
Yosafire, a demon who likes flowers, enjoys a carefree life with her friends.
Then one day, a mysterious bat appears in the garden…

The Gray Garden is a pseudo-RPG with a heavy story focus, made by Mogeko (site name Deep-Sea Prisoner) in RPG Maker 2000. I say “pseudo” because the story is what you’re here for and the RPG elements stay firmly in the back seat. Being bad at RPGs shouldn’t be a concern.

Well this is pretty neato in a retarded sort of way. I like the artstyle a lot more than I ought.

Dare I say I'm having fun?

Does anyone know what this reads? I got it while playing LSD Dream Emulator.

"Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil! But a foolish Samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future, where my evil is law! Now the fool seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Aku!"

This is my first time playing a horror RPG and it shows, because I'm jumping and getting all stressed out from playing it, even though admittedly the art sucks.

I can't even play it with the sound on. ;_;

I loved it, miles better than The Gray Garden. (which was good in it's own cute way)

Regarding neutral end 1...
Was it rape?

It's almost exactly the same game only with more water and an appropriately drippy protagonist.

>oh, it's that creepy dude who randomly attacks people for giggles and tried to eat me
>dude, could you look after my injured female friend? Thanks, gotta go!

A+ writing. I preferred TGG, if only because Yosafire was more fun, her friends had more to say than "........................" "...................." "Roger", and the whole world felt a little ethereal and surreal.

I hate uboachan
I hate their userbase
fakeneet, pretentious, tumblr attention seekers, always clamouring to one-up each other on selfdiagnosed mental problems or medication they take
also they’re posers and dont deserve madotsuki or her game
It really annoys me, and I wish their site and memories about the game all disappeared.

I like madotsuki, and seeing those normies even know she exists bothers me.

Tfw I like uboachan but it's only worth checking once every 2 months.

I never saw any of that stuff with the fakeneets, but I would only read the boards about uboa/mado/monoko and maybe the fangame boards.

Same with desuchan: it's only worth checking the Suigintou board 3 times a year or whatever.

Their NEET board is populated by reddit-tier normals that shitpost about /r9k/ related content rather than NEET/hikki/wiz topics like it should be. The Admin is completely fine with this too. Even so, I still go there sometimes.
