ZUN considering Touhou on Steam

>TOM: To change the subject, have you thought at all about distributing the Touhou Project games on Steam?

>ZUN: I have thought about it. Not having to actually ship packaging would decrease the cost quite a bit, but I would still have to do a lot to make it available on Steam. A fundamental problem is that I actually no longer have the original data from the early games, and it would be a challenge to create new versions. Also, most of all, if I started using Steam, I would finally have to shift my focus to international audiences. I’ve had a lot of inquiries from other countries lately.

Then just release the latest existing versions online as is. Hook them through the Steam loader like everyone else does. Pay for the existing English translations.

Is this seriously an issue? The existing files should not be that hard to reverse engineer for Steam release. This is just dissembling.

>> No.11794736

I wonder what would happen if ZUN finally did that and got flooded with money.
Do you think it would change him? I personally have faith in ZUN to not change, but one can never be too sure.

>> No.11794740

He could also just release the newer games on Steam and leave the older ones as is.
I'd be ok with that.

Does he mean catering to western tastes? He doesn't have to change anything, we love his games as they are. You don't need to change ZUN! Just let me give you money through steam so I can feel better about my life!

Games are supposed to be FUN and fulfilling in themselves, so deriving any "sense of accomplishment" from games is treating them as nothing more than a job. This is a lot bigger than Touhou. If ZUN brings this over it will increase the likeness of Japanese developers to distribute their games online by tenfold. Steam already has a few JP games here and there, after Touhou that number will surely multiply. I for one can't wait for it to happen.

How man C# compilers are there, and which one produces output that is inscrutable when decompiled?

But Touhou wasn't even written in C#, dude. Why are we talking about a wrong language?

Hardware failure is a possibility, or the fact that the older game would take a lot of effort to get off a PC-98 workstation and onto a modern NTFS system. Shit happens.

didn't Recettear perform surprisingly well in the west? That was through steam, correct?

>> No.11799544

>>11799071

It did but Recettear is no Touhou. They did motivate a lot of other devs to put their games there though. I doubt titles like Fresia would be there without it.

>> No.11799562

They'd have to play correctly without setting the system locale and other stupid shit like that.

I can't understand why you would want something you like becoming more popular in the west, especially considering the kinds of people it already attracts despite not being available on steam. This particular instance doesn't matter to me as I have very little investment in Touhou, but I still can't understand it.

Then it's obviously Mokou in the suit. She's the only one that could handle the heat and also respawn.
