I have used for quite some time (1 year and something to 2 years and something I think, can't really remember). And my brother more recently.

They help you deal with your emotions. What I felt is that it stabilizes your highs and lows and they also regulate your sleep cycle, so if you are currently sleeping little, you might feel very sleepy.
Do not that some side-effects for me were sometimes dizzyness and specially of note was an unpleasant sensation that reminds of tingling under the skin, except its weird and not exactly like that...
I'd say all in all it worked out excelent for me. Do not worry about your health, they're usually pretty safe except if you use them for long term (4-5 years and up). Your body takes some time getting used to it, but its fine afterwards. And remember, taking the pills won't solve your life/problems and even your depression, they just give you a way to fight back with more motivation and emotional stability. To really leave depression behind, you have to go for the root of your problems and work on them every day, be it with therapy, self analysis or whichever way suits you.
Talk with your psychiatrist often about the time range you want to be on meds. Find a doctor that you can trust and ffs TRUST him. The worst thing about depression medication therapy is that most patients take their pills inconsistently, that is, they take them and when they're feeling a little better they take them off and then they start it again and so on... This will only fuck up you even more, as proven by my brother.
All in all it is very worth it to take them as long as you have in mind that is a temporary fix, and not something for you to take for the rest of your life. It helped me a lot and I hope you can work out whatever it is that you're going though anon.
Cheers.

Look at the studies for whatever it is you're being prescribed. Their actual effectiveness is at best only marginally better then that of the placebos. And that's for selected studies.

Then look up side-effects.

Congrats, you won't be swallowing the pill jew any longer.

Taking drugs has never made me happy at all (and I mean depression medication, not recreational drugs). However, they did help me a lot by stabilizing my emotions and making me NOT sad. They do not make you euphoric, or else everyone would take them as recreational drugs instead of ecstasy. Rather they ease your emotional pains whatever they may be and in such, they boost your motivation to do things. However motivation =/= happiness, its more about your willingness to get off your ass and help yourself.

in general, anti-psychotics are not social skills or a lifes purpose in pill form, and infact, some can make you worse at these things (ssris to be exact, compare and contrast with generic lithium).

http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2012/10/if_psychiatry_is_committing_su.html

point being, practice virtue to acquire virtue. what are the virtues? if you cant figure it out on your own (obviously, since youre in this situation), find a good tradition that tells you what.

once you tell your doctor you have mental problems, it's going into your file and there's no way back. a lot of doors in life will be closed for you. if you ever plan to get a good job, join the military, or apply for a better health plan/insurance program you're fucked.

just saying. I'm not well myself but I don't want to ask for help just yet. I'm only going to do it if it gets too difficult to control and I end up hurting someone or something.

I might try self medicating in the future, but I don't know anyone who sells the stuff, it's expensive and I have no real way to check if I'm being sold talc or candy.

It's more fun that it sounds. I have to go to therapy and group therapy regularly. Which is a rather jarring experience each time.

On the bride side, it made me consider getting off of well-fare and getting a regular job. So the system works, kind off.

Dude, these pills don't work and they know that they don't work. After a few weeks of nothing happening to my emotional state we just switch/increase meds. Rinse and repeat.

>Dude, these pills don't work and they know that they don't work.
Pretty much this. All they do is suppress symptoms and cause dependency and/or side effects.
I've been through benzo withdrawal, which was worse then any anxiety or fear I've experienced before.
