Anyone have advice for sketching good looking long, straight hair? It's so hard for me to tell what went wrong when I try to sketch it from reference even. The curves are just so hard to get right, especially near the ends.

Sadly, you are incorrect. /ic/ sticky does have everything you need to know to get started. For studied improvement anyway. The first and foremost important thing is to draw. In my opinion, really dive into what you love, get to the point where you can freely draw, then study.

Even if your drawings are shitty, if you can get to the point where you can produce them every session with ease, learning from the material /ic/ gives you will be easier. Remember there is no one correct path. The only thing wholeheartedly common between all paths to constantly draw.

Update for this WIP. Heeding some advice from my friend and /ic/.

Figured I'd ask here instead of making a new thread.

Anyone has any tips for modifying figs? Especially altering clothes.

So far I've dismantled the fig, got rid of the excess clothing, changed the posture with some epoxy and modified the head inclination by cutting the neck.
I still have to change the arm, fill in a hole in the abdomen, alter clothes and then paint it.
I'm still hesitating wether to go with bloomer or swimsuit though.

What's better to get a smooth body, to add some expoy and then smooth that out, or dirrectly sculpt the body then smooth it out?
Also, how to change the way an arm is bent, is it best to use an oven to make it softer and bend it or just cut it, carve it, flip it, attach back and polish?

Also I have no idea what to use for grinding, I only have those big ass file you use for DIY. For now I've been using a modeling knife, but it's showing its limits. Any advice welcome.

It doesn't look much at 100% but when you zoom in it's all color coded. Be sure to lower to opacity too while working.

Fair enough, thanks for the honest feedback. I use Guitar Pro 6, which explains the shitty VSTs. I feel like just getting anything to sound remotely listenable is already stretching the program to its limits, but I know that the other half of it is because of my lack of experience with mixing and whatnot. I'll keep working at it -- maybe one of these days I'll learn how to work with actual music production programs (I've got Native Instruments Komplete on a hard drive somewhere).

Something about her hair bothers me. I don't think the style I chose to use for coloring it worked so well and I also think the linework doesn't look right. But I'm not sure how to make it any better. Long hair is so much harder to sketch and color than skin I am finding. If I may suggest one thing, it's that you don't want to use GP for anything other than guitar. You can create somewhat decent guitar sounds (and if you're doing shit like divebombs or swells you might as well use it), but the bass and drum just sound horrible. Use a proper VST for everything else if you can.

I've done a lot of study on bird anatomy so I know how they should look but I found that actual bird wings weren't nearly as good looking as one would think. People seem to usually draw them differently than an actual bird wing and more like an angel wing which is quite different. It's difficult for me to draw them still though, just like long hair. I have no idea how to make them look fluffy and soft.

Will just sketching other peoples hair be good practice? And would it help to use lots of layers for it, especially since some of it will overlap?

It really depends on you. If you have the motivation to do it on your own, college classes would just be a colossal waste of money. It's not like your professor would know something you can't read in a book.

It is a good way to get experience with materials you haven't used/haven't had access to before, but if you're going to be using mainly a tablet, that really doesn't matter.

The heads look small, and work on the construction of them. They seem more like balls with flat features then an actual skull. I can't tell too much how the anatomy is, but it looks decent (much better then your heads).
