Hell no, the story is mostly extremely dumb and inconsistent meta-shit. In the end you always fight a ,,god´´ because you're the best swordsman of the world, the chosen one and of course, you're a 14 years old stereotype hero who lost his parents - you want revenge wwwwwwwwwwww

If you want to start sora no kiseki, play the first chapter on pc. Then wait for the second chapter, which is being translated for some time in 2014. Do not skip games and avoid the internet because you will read spoilers and it will completely ruin the order of the games. These stories are very deliberate and I feel like they were written years before the games themselves came out. I tried playing them with minimal japanese proficiency and it was pretty hard. I was able to beat the games but I missed a lot of the details. You can learn a lot about the story by simply playing through and watching what happens but you don't really understand it.

xseed has the rights to the first three chapters of sora no kiseki but not to zero, ao, and sen no kiseki. Given the difficulty they experienced with the second chapter (they had to outsource to carpe fulgur) and the lack of sales they will receive by releasing a niche rpg on pc, I doubt they will continue translating the series, especially since the scripts keep growing larger. Falcom rpgs are basically visual novels with tacked on gameplay and more linearity.

It will be many years before I am ready but I still want to translate these games for everyone to enjoy.

I should really get them working again. I have a bunch of JRPGs that I always wanted to finish! Valkyrie Profile, Grandia 1, the Ar Tonelico series!

It's not wrong to want a critic you agree with. I didn't listen to Roger Ebert because he often recommended movies I didn't like, and panned movies I did like.
Of course, sometimes you read negative reviews and you disagree with the author ("This actually sounds pretty good, I'll check it out.") but when a critic falls somewhere in between, then they're worthless to you.
If you agree 46% of the time and disagree 54% of the time, then you might as well flip a coin. Or better yet, find someone you'll consistently agree or disagree with so you respect their opinion: that's the point of critics and why we have no shortage of them.

I beat Xenogears last night. God damn, there is so much stuff going on with the story and universe once you get near the end of the first disc. Was kinda hard to keep track of everything.

I really enjoyed it for the most part though. There were a couple dungeons that were really annoying, and a few of the boss fight sequences were really fucking dumb, but overall it was a great game. I'm about to start Xenoblade.

The very nature of video games makes it a tricky balance to achieve because some people very much like that Disgaea-style hypergrind, and some people like story driven games but don't like the particular story the game is driven by, and a lot of little details like that

Personally, I just play pen and paper roleplaying games. They're a lot more neato if you want story driven games. If I want more intricate and interesting gameplay, I play RPGs well strictly speaking I don't really play RPGs anymore because I find the gameplay of other genres of games more compelling, but you know what I mean; freedom of design in pen and paper vs linearity and polish in video games

I agree on everything Anthony has said regarding RPGs, but his words weren't exactly a revelation to me. He just put my thoughts into words, really.

Though whether or not I agree with him or not, it doesn't really matter. What I appreciate is that he isn't afraid to say what he actually thinks. Maybe I was just too young to remember, but the internet did not have this kind of allegiance to holding a single consensus for any topic. Isn't that what everyone was trying to escape by coming online years ago? You weren't allowed to say anything that was to out of line in the real world unless you wanted to be excluded or sent to a mental institution.

The upvote/downvote thing of opinions in the last few years is a clear reflection of the internet's devolution. It's just as bad as the real world, just almost. When anonymous posting is completely outlawed in a decade then there will truly be no place to run. I implore you to consider my view and not get angry at somebody because you don't like what they are saying.

I've been playing Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth recently on the PSP.
I don't know what the hell is going on.
The battle system, even though it appears simple, is really confusing.
Barely any info is given too. For example, what exactly happens if I don't offer my spoils of war to Odin? Hell, what happens if I do? What do all of the stats mean and which are even important? Should I just dump my CP into the positive traits of my party members? What's the point of the negative traits?
Also the game expects me to just readily train and then hand over some of my party members within a certain number of turns possibly never to be seen again. On top of all that I'm thrown into a "hey the world's gonna end if you're not quick/efficient enough at playing this game" at you a la Majora's Mask, except (to my knowledge) you can't turn back time.

I do adore this game though even if I suck horribly at it. It's pretty intense and fun.

It's pretty great. The world is massive and you get to explore all of it, and it's actually filled with things to do and places to see rather than just dumping you into a big world with nothing in it. The battle system is also fast paced and really fun, and the music is top notch.

Only real complaint I have with the game is that the sidequests could be more interesting. Apparently there's almost 500 sidequests in the game, but from what I'm seeing most of them end up being along the lines of "kill X amount of monsters" or "gather X amount of items," which is kinda lame. At least you don't have to return to the quest giver when you finish 90% of the time and quests usually get completed as you go through the game.

Still, I'd be okay with having less sidequests in exchange for more interesting ones.

It has more, they're cheaper and it gets them faster while Euros usually have to wait multiple months if not a year or more for publishers to get off their asses and publish the games in Europe.

Vita vs 3DS is a taste thing.

I enjoy my Vita more than my 3DS and I'd say they're about equal with games but many people will disagree. I don't enjoy Mario games of any kind or life sims like Animal Crossing so I pretty much only have JRPGs for it.
Out of the ones I have I'd say Fire Emblem Awakening, Etrian Odyssey 4 (and to some extent Untold), SMT4 and soon Bravely Default are the best titles.
The 3DS' hardware, interface and online infrastructure are pathetic and archaic.

Vita is a great purchase if you don't have a PS3 because it has a few good (enhanced) ports like the Arland trilogy (Atelier games), Disgaea 3 & 4 and Persona 4 Golden. It'll soon get Demon Gaze, FFX/X-2HD and the first two Neptunia game remakes are also likely to be localized.
It also has a ton of untranslated VNs and anime series' games if you're into those and/or know Japanese.
I also enjoy hunting games that don't look and play like shit so Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden and God Eater 2 have all been much more enjoyable to play than MH3U. And the console isn't region locked so there's no problem with importing games from Japan or anywhere else. The screen and res are leagues ahead of the 400x240 mess that's on the 3DS and the touch part of it is capacitive and not resistive.

From a pure JRPG perspective the 3DS probably has more games right now but early 2014 is looking really good for the Vita while things are looking rather bleak for the 3DS but honestly, neither of the two have vast JRPG libraries at the moment.

Thank you for replying.
Anyway I don't care about Mario or such games as well, I always buy a new console for jrpg only.
FE, Bravely, SMT IV, Devil Hackers, Etrian Odyssey are the indeed the main 3ds titles I was thinking about, while the psvita for now has Demon Gaze, the Curry God, Muramasa and Ys.
I own a ps3 and I've already played all the Neptunia and Atelier games so I wasn't couting them in.
The point is, I'm unsure about the future releases and I don't know if it's sage to bet on the psvita, which has been lacking so far.

Well, I don't know a single JRPG coming for the 3DS in 2014 that isn't Bravely Default or DeSu2. It seems like they shot their load in 2013 with those admittedly pretty good games and now there's not that much.

Not the same guy, but the Vita also allows you to play a rather large collection of PS1 and PSP games, so if there's any JRPGs from the previous gens you've missed out on it might be worth factoring this. Sprite based games actually upscale really well because the Vita's resolution is exactly double the PSP's and you can disable filtering.

Is there any reason you couldn't get a 3DS now and buy a Vita further down the line when the Vita's library has fattened up a bit, if that's what's concerning you? Though there might already be more available than you think.

It's all about what you want to play really. 2014 looks pretty shitty for the 3DS so far and games like FE:A and SMT4 are good games but mediocre new titles in their series.

About buying a NA 3DS you have to understand that you'll need to import every single game you're going to buy or get them digitally but Nintendo's account system (or lack thereof) is extremely dodgy and as they don't sell their prepaid cards digitally you'll have to pay even more to get the cards.

Nintendo has been releasing majority of their games in Europe several months earlier than in NA, not to mention there are plenty of Europe only releases for a lot of different games. Hell, people had to throw a shitstorm just to get Xenoblade released in America, and it ended up being some shitty Gamestop only deal which inflated the prices super high for no reason.

And it's silly in this case, since BD has a bunch of different selectable languages. People in JAPAN can play the game in English before America gets to play it at all. It doesn't make any sense. And this is Nintendo we're talking about, not some smaller publisher that might have difficulties publishing in multiple regions.

I was talking about the 3DS and Amerilards are all too happy to bring up Xenoblade every time the discussion comes up. The Wii is de facto not region locked because it's hilariously easy to circumvent. That's if you even want to get the game legally because piracy or even emulation on the Wii is no problem at all.

Meanwhile Europoors get to wait months for games like FE:A, EO4, EOU, SH and years for games like DeSuO and SMT4. Not to mention that all this shit is 50% more expensive in Europe.

And then one fucking game comes out two months earlier in Europe and entitled Americans throw hissy fits about how everyone hates them. Get your head out of your ass and enjoy the superior position you're in games-wise.

I could list off a ton of other Europe only/early release games if you'd like. Xenoblade is just the best example.
>The Wii is de facto not region locked because it's hilariously easy to circumvent. That's if you even want to get the game legally because piracy or even emulation on the Wii is no problem at all.
People shouldn't have to resort to such means just to play a game that they would like to play. Not everyone has computers good enough to emulate more modern game systems, not everyone knows or wants to fuck with their systems to illegally play something. Some of us are collectors and like to buy things they enjoy. And even in this case it doesn't help, since there are no 3DS emulators, and the system is region locked. The only way around it is to buy some shitty flashcard that isn't worth it at all.
>Meanwhile Europoors get to wait months for games like FE:A, EO4, EOU, SH and years for games like DeSuO and SMT4
Again, Europe also gets plenty of games earlier than America. And in the case of Etrian Odyssey and SMT and junk, isn't that shit up to Ghostlight? Maybe they should stop being incompetent.

>And then one fucking game comes out two months earlier in Europe and entitled Americans throw hissy fits about how everyone hates them
Don't put words into other peoples mouths. I've not said anything of the sort. I'm merely confused as to why BD has been released in Europe, Australia, and Japan, yet is getting a two month delayed release in America. What reason could there possibly be for NoA to release the game two months later than everywhere else? I don't understand.

I normally don't even give a shit, waiting a couple months has never been a huge issue EVER, but I've been waiting to play this game for so long that having to wait another two months is incredibly shitty. Do not get so up in arms just because someone has expressed their discontent.

there are two ratings that determine which ending you get. one basically says how well you're doing your job. it goes up when you send qualified characters and goes down when you keep artifacts for yourself. the other is like a loyalty rating that goes down when you send characters and up when you see certain events. it's pretty complicated so you should use a guide if you want the good ending.

traits only matter for characters you're going to send. if you want to use a character in your party you should use cp on skills. get ones that increase attack and max the guts skill as soon as you find it.

if your one rating drops to 0 freya yells at you and you get the bad ending. otherwise it's not really important. the rating on lenneth's stats screen is the important one for getting the good ending and you have to do pretty specific things to get it high enough.

you don't really need to worry about time periods. you get so many that even after you recruit every character and do every new dungeon you'll have to skip some to get to the next phase. grinding isn't so important either. if you need to level a character up for sending or whatever you can use the exp orb which you fill up by exploring dungeons. if you want to level your entire party up the best way is to use that one item that turns enemies into crystals. if you go into that cave of whatever dungeon sometimes it will have enemies from the end of the game and you can use the item to kill them for tons of exp.

First encounter with Leo... so not that far.

Maybe I'll try again. The HD TV in my apartment displays the output from the PS2 really badly which is the most frustrating thing really, especially since the TV is small to begin with.

I wonder how recent HDTVs and 4Ks handle low res output from old consoles.

>First encounter with Leo... so not that far.

Yeah, I'd try again if I were you. Deimos is pretty much the low point of the game, all things considered. The game does a pretty good job at mixing things up as you go along even though the basic mechanics remain constant throughout.

Not much to be done about the TV, but I guess you could look into buying the HD version if you've got a PS3 or 360. I've heard they aren't without their faults, though.

Apparantly the PS3 version was fixed with a patch. I got the PS2 version since it's pretty cheap here and I already had a Japanese PS2 that someone gave me.

Maybe I should just take the plunge and buy a PS3 to get back into gaming...

I'd say go for it. Plenty of games for it that deserve a playthrough or two.

Also, a little thing that you probably know already: Whenever ADA says something out of a cutscene (like the generic messages you get when you defeat an enemy, pick up metatron, fall below 50% health, charging the Vector Cannon etc.) you can press L3 (positive) or R3 (negative) while she's still talking and Dingo will respond accordingly.

If you do it during the part where Ken rides with you in Jehuty's cockpit there's a chance that she'll add her own interjection on top of that, too.

FF6 is the best JRPG

FFVI is mediocre in most ways. Has to be one of the most overrated games of all time.

Yesterday I went to a garage sale and got a like new copy of Wild Arms (manual and everything included, perfect condition aside from a little dust on the disc and the price sticker on the jewel case)for five bucks. How good of a find was this?

Drakengard wasn't really a jrpg... but Nier is The best PS3 game for me and probably also best story driven game of all time. But since Cavia is over what are they planning to do about drakengard 3? From first glance it looks like remake of 1 with girl protag?

I was the beta (or, more beta, possibly gamma?)
of the brothers in my family, and I always had
to watch instead of play.

Now that I'm older and not a helpless 8 year old
fighting over who gets the PS1, can anyone
recommend some good games to
emulate? Im sick of lame-ass americanized
rpgs

Really enjoy Phantom brave, fire emblem, or
tactical anime rpgs

Have you played the Persona 2 duology yet? They're excellent. EP is the weaker of the two and Maya just does not work as a silent protagonist, but IS is far and away the high point of the series.

The only persona game I've played was P4 arena,
and from what i can tell its much different than the
other persona games being that its not an rpg. but
i will definitely give it a try, thanks

It's so much different from P4 that if not for the title you could very easily convince someone that it's an entirely different series. Don't expect fun highschool friendship time because that is not what you're getting. Final boss is absolutely crazy, but don't play the PSP port because it was censored. It's a pretty hilarious censor so look it up when you're done. IS never got an official localisation but there's a fan translation out there that was actually endorsed by Atlus. Unfortunately I don't know many other PS1 JRPGs because I grew up with an N64, but P2 is essential.

Probably because it's not even out yet. I plan on preordering it once I get some money, but until I get it in January or February, whenever it's getting released, I don't really have much to say about it.

Wasn't the PS1 version also censored? And are the improved gameplay elements that negligible?

The gameplay's still kinda clunky, but less so in the PSP version. It's not awful, but it definitely takes some getting used to.

You know, there is one thing I hate about JRPGs. They spend so much time catering to waifufags while husbandofags still don't get jack shit. It's almost 2014, throw me a bone here for crying out loud.

I finished Xenoblade last night. It had a nice ending.

I want to play through all three Xenosaga games, but I don't have a copy of the third game and I don't have any money to buy it...

This post was literally made by janjan, note the premature deletion and how right below it there's the same post again, only this time with a smaller image.

Janny's probably threw an autistic fit when he saw that 2MB+ image and instantly deleted it by instinct (PNG anime spammer's fault) but then felt regret and made a smaller one as a sort of apology for the original poster, LMAO...
