Do you prefer to watch Japanese movies dubbed or subbed?

(Live-action only. The kind of people who watch Japanese cartoons would never watch them dubbed.)

>> No.11654018

I watch dubbed cartoons all the time though. Subbed for live action movies though, since dubbing is more obvious and off-putting with real mouths.

Subtitles for everything, why would you want to watch any dub unless you just have it on in the background and aren't actually paying attention to the movie?

Subbed is superior.

Because I have terrible vision and staring at subtitles means I don't get to see the action.

There's a reason silent movies would cut to black screens with text. And don't none of you cinema nerds tell me they couldn't figure out how to transfer text onto film back then because yes they could probably.

I will NEVER undertand janny's reasons for not deleting these kind of threads.
Godzilla is not /jp/.
I feel he doesn't delete them because of some twisted feel of superiority.
>"Godzilla isn't /jp/, but since the OP isn't about anime, I won't delete it. OP should be thankful I didn't delete this thread."

How come? What if the dudes dubbing it have better voices or acting capabilities?

It's a Japanimation but Hayao Miyazaki said the French dub of Crimson Pig was better than the original Japanese version.

Back when Chinese movies started getting popular in the 90's I tried watching some dubbed movies and it was horrible. Since then, subs for everything.

What was the deal with this film? Certain scenes were obviously dubbed but some looked like they were dubbed from another language and some looked like they were dubbed in their original language (maybe ADRed if that existed back then).

The worst was in the DVD edition they re-added some scene to establish Ugly-san's cohorts joining him, but I guess the actors were speaking Spanish or Italian or maybe they were just dead and they dubbed over with new voices and it's like why is this a part of the film just cut it out it's not that important.

That may be true because drama schools in France are ruff. This is not the case with most dubs.

I wouldn't recommend dubs for Jap stuff, ever. You'll miss some amazing voice acting.

That makes no sense. Reading does not take any effort. You just glance at the text and you've already read it. ...Or maybe it does for dumb , fat, ignorant americans who cant even locate their own country from the world map. How did you find you way to the Internet?

It's not as funny as you remember it. The gags are dated and the sketches are painful.

I know a few of my mates just watch films in the background, so they prefer dubs.

I always actively watch films though - I prefer subs since I find live-action dubs grating. You can probably tell that I'm the sort of person who can't even watch porn if the audio isn't synced properly. I doubt most of the films I watch could've even afforded the luxury of another set of actors.

>> No.11654513

>> No.11654557

Yeah, I never get how people can watch films without dedicating themselves to them.

I haven't been to the cinema in years. Maybe I had more tolerance for it in the past, but if someone talked at me or I had to go to the toilet during a film, it would ruin the whole experience. Even if the film was shite.

>> No.11654581

>>11654513
Do you understand nihongo well?

If immersion is your only criterion, I'd go with nothing but subs - I simply don't understand enough Japanese to watch films without them.

I feel that another language dub over the original live-action would break immersion more than text would. I certainly don't find out-of-sync lip movements and dialogue very immersive.

Okay, listen here anon. Back when I was a kid, born 92, if I saw any movies relating to Japan it was all 1980's mivies my dad watched and rented for me. My Dad occasoinally watched serious Japanese and American mash up movies from the 80's, for example Black Rain. I know that I saw a glimpse of dubbed Japanese fantasy movies at somepoint. I remember almost everything from my childhood and I think the reason I tend to watched dubbed Japanese 80's movies SOMETIMES is because I must have seen the VHS tapes up on the shelves next to the Dark Crystal, The laybrnth, Legend, and The Never Endung Story(1 & 2, but 1 was the best). The dubs are nice to fall asleep to, because only low quality dvds really have dubs these days which reminds me of my childhood grounded in 80's Japanese movies. Other wise I'm stricky English subbed or raw Japanese, unless nothing else but dub is availible.

Just how are the English/Western releases of Japanese films?

A lot of anime nerds get upset by their cartoons being dubbed badly or whatever, but live-action films are closer to art so things like censorship and altering the source video is far more of a real concern.

Are scenes ever excised or altered, perhaps to better fit Western standards or an English-language audio track? Are they ever "remastered" in stupid ways, like removing film grain or adding new effects, replacing the Japanese version?

I want to become a DVD otaku but there are so many factors that could potentially flare up my autism.
