That's the thing though, isn't it? Sales pretty much beat the sales of each previous single whenever Acchan was centre but these days the numbers are staying at around the same.

While AKB are certainly maintaining their popularity, they are no longer growing in popularity like they once did. That said, this could be attributed to far more than just Acchan and other OGs leaving but it's definitely one of the causes. The only exceptions to this sales figure trend are the election singles and since I have bought 10 singles one year and 20 the next just for election tickets, I don't think this indicates an increase in popularity.

That is unless you believe that they just happened to reach their peak at around the time Acchan left and there simply aren't any more potential customers left among the Japanese public. Have we reached peak wota?

I don't think AKB reaching a peak is in anyway a bad thing, if sales can remain steady. I think this is a much better comparison despite the obvious differences in their core audiences.

In terms of sheer size combined with the revolving door of auditions and graduations, it does seem a lot like a female JE sometimes and, let's face it, AKB aren't competing with other female idol groups these days, no matter how many up-and-comers declare themselves to be their rivals. They're competing with Johnny's on the Oricon ranking and, amazingly, they're winning for the most part.
