Perfume are mainstream pop and aren't even slightly "otaku".

If you want accessible pop music with a lot of crossover into "otaku" culture, there's obviously AKB48 and their sister groups, but I would also recommend less mainstream groups like Afilia Saga East, Denpagumi, Momoiro Clover Z, Fudanjuku and BiS. Dig even deeper and you'll find denpa artists such as Toromi and the like who are far more "otaku" but far less accessible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWvcqTULQF4

Surely you can see how obviously this song panders to "otaku" in comparison to the average Perfume song?

Momoiro Clover Z is my favourite, basically the only idol group that appeals to me. Their live concerts are especially fantastic.

I think those groups they have large amounts of members are too hard to get into and follow seriously.

I guess management companies do it because it makes the girls expendable, can easily ditch those asking for more money and so on.

I was a big fan of Momoclo in their pre-Z days and largely fell away from them once Akari, who had over time become my favourite member, graduated.

As for the sheer size of the groups being kind of daunting, I can definitely understand your feelings in that regard. I got into AKB48 back in 2008 and thought they were too big then never mind now. If I were to first discover them today, I would probably feel the same way about them as you do if I hadn't already become a fan by now.

The thing is, as a long term fan of AKB48, I can tell you that rather than feeling alienated by the huge amount of girls in the groups, I actually feel more attached to my favourite member than I ever have to any other idol. Whereas in the past I would focus primarily on my favourite member but still have a huge amount of loyalty towards the group as a whole, these days I think of myself more as a "Sumire fan" than an "AKB48 fan" and honestly feel like I'll stop supporting the group the day she leaves.

This makes the whole idol experience more personal to me and it's kind of liberating in a way. I would say that whether you should get into AKB48 or not depends on whether you're the type of person who cares about groups and their dynamics or if you're more concerned with the individual girls themselves. The focus on individual idols rather than groups is so strong that both AKB48 members and most fans actually look down on fans who can't pick a single girl to support over all others. If you ever want to see an angry idol, I recommend that you tell an AKB girl at a handshake event that she is your "third favourite" or something to that effect.

Perfume have wota, and although they do not deliberately court the otaku market, there is a precedent for idol groups with a more general target audience to acquire wota followers, the obvious example being early Momusu. It wasn't until AKB that you see extremely aggressive marketing towards the lonely loser market, and honestly I'd argue that AKB48 remain far more "otaku" than Dempagumi, Momoclo, et al. just for that reason. Even with their apparent mainstream success, everything about them, from the group's mission statement to the elections to the renai game, is still highly focused on gobbling up the massive disposable income of otaku in a way that no other idol group has really been able to emulate. There's a great series of posts on Neojaponisme about how fragmentary subcultural tastes such as those of the otaku and gyaru are defining the Japanese "mainstream" right now in the absence of monolithic mass market for pop music, and AKB48 are a big part of that argument.

I feel you. Tomochin is gone and Rabutan is in HKT now, so it's basically only Minegishi that's keeping me interested in AKB48. My level of engagement with the group probably won't last too much longer—it's been gradually lessening since about 2011 anyway. Their formula is wearing me out anyway.

The same fucktards who thought that Japan wasn't accepting of Kpop because they were afraid of their "long lengs"?
No, thank you. The fact you are just copying their same fake arguments for lack of personal experience also detracts a lot of points from your post.
Thinking in 2013 that AKB is an obscure group only ugly stupid otakus in Akihabara care about isn't just underestimating the group, it's putting fingers in your ears and screaming "lalalala can't hear you" while being completely ignorant of the evolution of the group.

Christ, you clearly didn't read that post. Marxy argued that otaku weren't interested in K-pop, not "Japan." He was commenting on the prevalence of mainstream female fans of SNSD in Japan rather than male fans, as it is in S. Korea. He joked that he could imagine otaku being scared of them. Are you trying to say that otaku do like SNSD?

And the point isn't that only otaku care about AKB48—it's that otaku tastes are defining the mainstream. If you don't think AKB is still pandering to specifically otaku, it's you who's sticking your finger in your ears. They released their renai game long after they had become a household name. The members' individual activities in particular often make gestures towards finding a broader appeal, but even then, that would be dealt with through their talent jimusho, not AKB management. The Japanese mainstream accepts AKB, but that doesn't mean there is a mass market for AKB48 like there was for J-pop in the nineties.

This is why I prefer blogs that are critical of AKB despite being a fan—most AKB fans simply cannot be objective about what the group really is.

Please, stop referring to those people by name, let alone with terms of endearment.

>Are you trying to say that otaku do like SNSD?
Considering that Kpop profits in Japan crashed by >70% over the last year and Kpop acts completely vanished from Japanese television, I'd rather argue that Japan as a whole didn't have any interest in that shit and "Marxy" was just desperate to find a scapegoat.

>They released their renai game long after they had become a household name
Unless you seriously want to fool someone, those games are so tongue-in-cheek it's hard to ignore. Next thing you're gonna bring up is that baby-face game for that IPS service that literally nobody bought. I know your dearth of arguments.

>I prefer blogs that are critical of AKB despite being a fan

It's not a "term of endearment." It's what he actually calls himself. Well done, anon.

He wrote his piece on K-pop long before it crashed—don't remember exactly when, but my memory is telling me around '10 or so. I don't see how it's relevant anyway, since he didn't argue that Japan didn't like K-pop. He argued that *otaku* didn't like K-pop, but that mainstream "normal" girls did.

Plenty of otaku shit is self-consciously otaku or tongue-in-cheek about its origins—off the top of my head, Lucky Star, Oreimo. Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that it targets otaku. Who else were those games intended for? The general public? Don't make me laugh. Are you saying that a group of execs got in a room and decided to make a renai game because it would be funny?

>confirmation bias
please don't kill me with irony

The point of reading blogs like neojaponisme rather than just pulling up stage48/nihongogo/whatever is to avoid confirmation bias and the endless echo chamber of justifications and over-explanations I used to see there. I used to believe that shit too, but it's been almost a year since I've engaged with the AKB fandom, and I can't believe you guys are still asspained over the fact that someone is pointing out the patently obvious fact that AKB cater heavily to otaku above other consumer groups. I mean good lord, I like the group, and I'll probably follow Tomochin until one of us dies, but have just a little perspective.

Yeah, why not. Did you actually bother to play them to find out that they're hardly a "dating" simulator?
By the way, I love how you are conveniently ignoring AKB+Me and the countless mobage card games, Mar... err, my fellow AKB fan.

>The point of reading blogs like neojaponisme rather than just pulling up stage48/nihongogo/whatever is to avoid confirmation bias
Either way, you are only getting your information through a middleman who selects them and spoonfeeds it to you as he pleases.
Unless you have free access to the original Japanese source, you can't call your opinion informed.
"Marxy" getting his idea of what AKB is like from shit sites like Alfalfa rather than direct observation is also no secret at all.

>> No.11635144

>>11635109
AKB management making motions towards a more general audience =/= abandoning their core audience of otaku. They have a hold on the mainstream, so naturally they want to court them.

Have I played them? Jesus, have you? You think they're intended for the general public? No one who isn't already invested in AKB would be interested in playing that—maybe a few more casual fans here and there, but little else.

I like how you imply that I can't possibly be an AKB fans since I don't have conform to the party line—and you worry about my confirmation bias? Unless this is a cult, there shouldn't be any trouble comprehending the idea that I can like something while accepting what it actually is.

>you can't have an informed opinion
By those standards, no one does except maybe a sociologist who has personally compiled data on the AKB fandom. It's actually absurd that you would demand that level of precision just to avoid admitting that AKB48 is heavily reliant on otaku appeal.

>> No.11635181

>=/= abandoning their core audience of otaku
Considering that AKB in 2006-7, back when it was still reliant on otaku, had low CD sales, the theater was in the red and seats for the daily shows didn't usually sell out, I'd say you are quite overestimating the size of this "core audience" or their financial contribution, Marxy.
Not to mention that the trends has been always toward getting out of the niche, even at the cost of discontinuing stuff like the gacha prizes. What point in doing that if you are supposedly "heavily reliant on otaku appeal", moreso than Momoclo et al.?

>> No.11635187

>>11635144
your argument about the game as otaku pandering is very poor. The game itself is very accessible to the general public. The general public is not polarized by a romance simulator. Its like saying harry potter is only read by kids.

If you want to make a point about aggressive otaku marketing then you should mention the extras that come with the limited edition.

>> No.11635211

>>11635181
Oh, great, so apparently the number of AKB otaku has stayed constant since 2007. Gotcha.

And yes, normal people in Japan do not think much of otaku—hence why it's interesting that the group became so successful despite being so obviously designed with otaku tastes in mind.

If you can't see that the whole business model is geared towards otaku, then you're just being wilfully blind to the obvious. Momoclo and other idol groups appeal to otaku as well, clearly, but the AKB model has been most successful in maximizing the amount of disposable income they can suck out of otaku wallets—all based on physical copies, so it's a bit of a Galapagos, but potent nonetheless. The casual fans and young female fans probably fill out their sales significantly, but it's the otaku who are their core audience, as it has been from day one. Just because they have mainstream fans doesn't change what they are.

I'm just going to restate that it doesn't help your case for me having some kind of anti-AKB bias to try and out me as being Marx covertly upsetting your AKB fandom. I don't even agree with everything that he writes; however, I do think he has a good point when it come to the collapse of the Japanese mass market and the foregrounding of subcultural tastes in the mainstream.

>> No.11635229

>>11635187
I assumed that the extras were a given. Besides, the general public doesn't need to be *polarized* for it to be appealing to otaku. Not everything that appeals to otaku is polarizing. I just don't see a general audience being particularly *interested* in it, no matter how accessible.

I can definitely relate. If Suuchan weren't still around, I would at most be a casual fan of HKT48 these days, with my interest in AKB having slowly dwindled as the long term members have graduated.

Other than that, I'll also be somewhat into Momoclo and HKT but not to a serious extent although I must admit that I'm starting to get seriously into BiS so maybe my time as an idol fan won't end altogether. I'll need something to sink all that left over time and money into after all. I'll be in Japan in around April or so and there's no way I can do this and not attend one of their apparently insane shows that sometimes run for 24 hours. I've been told that I should set aside a lot of time, wear cheap clothes I don't mind getting dirty, and not actually expect anything in particular. It sounds unlike any idol concert I've ever seen.

Yeah, pretty much the same with me. Momoclo never really grabbed me fully like AKB (and Momusu long before that), but they've proven themselves enough for me to check up on every so often. I'll probably keep AKB at least in the corner of my eye at least as long as Minegishi is around, but it isn't the same anymore, especially now that Tomomi's gone. I'm likely going to get that Manatsu no Dome box set if only for Tomo's graduation, but I might just call it quits after that.

Yeah, BiS actually sound really interesting. Didn't they say they wanted to kill AKB48 in an English interview sometime last year?
