I built one, and love it. My apartment is not very warm, so I can just hide under it at night and have my head stick out and read. It was something like $45 to build, and is wonderful. My only regret is that I did not build one 10 years ago. I live in the northern states, and while winter has been light this year, its still cold at night. I am an adult, but you know what? I still sometimes hide my whole body under it like its a fort. I also fall asleep under it quite a bit. Mine is 36x36x18.

The legs are 4x4x18, the supporting arms are 2x4x28, the top is 28x28x2. 4 2x2x4 support the table top, so it fits flush with the surface.

Pic shows what the corners looked like, before puttying, sanding and staining.

It would probably be easy enough to build a new top to go over your frame. My biggest issue was finding a good size top. I ended up gluing and bolting three 36"x12" boards together to get the right size. It was a real pain, so I do not fault you for using particle board. It is inexpensive and like you said, it functions just as well.

>>11609446
I noticed that thanks to the picture and promptly corrected it. However, I was too lazy to move my computer stuff back off of the table and retake the picture.

>>11609450
>>11609458
The only thing that I would add to this is that you will also need two cross bars on the frame about 25-30 cm apart to hold the heater. There are a few guides online, but it is fairly simple if you study a few pictures. I did my planning in my head, but I could probably draw up what I did if you really want to give it a try.

>> No.11609505

>>11609493
For mine, I have the cross boards on the sides of the frame, not the corners. They hold the heater, and bolt in place with recessed bolts. That way, I can take off the heater in the spring, and quickly put in back on in the fall. I used 8 2x1x20 for my cross supports. Pain in the ass to saw. I really like how yours turned out though. I have a bunch of hickery back in the barn at home, so I want to remake the frame out of that.

Usually an electrical heater. It's almost impossible for the kotatsu to actually catch on fire, since it doesn't get anywhere near hot enough for the table or blanket to spontaneously combust, and there's no source of ignition. Even if your heater explodes, I doubt the kotatsu would catch on fire, and likely will only char the wood. The inside has to be comfortably warm for you to put your legs in. I suppose there's theoretically danger if you make your own kotatsu and put an industrial heater inside, but for normal kotatsu there's not actually a fire risk.

This anon was right.

The tube is actually connected to the stem that goes into the water, she would be drinking the liquid in it.

A water pipe is extremely simple, burn smoke pulling it through a stem that is submerged in water, the smoke will come out of the water, and you inhale that.

Reposting/spamming is not valid, because it was wrong to delete it in the first place.

Yup. I'm in Hawaii now, though, so it's put away in a closet.

Pic is not my kotatsu. I don't take pictures of myself or my stuff.

...and I'm nowhere near neat or orderly.

Sorta. Some of the older ones aren't insulated on the underside.

I knew a female who had a scar on her thigh from twisting into the bare metal heater underside of the table.

I think some of 'em used to use charcoal, once.

>charcoal
oh god

In the 16th century, europeans used metal "Warming Pans" filled with smoldering charcoal to warm their beds as they slept. I guess there was no such thing as insulation back then.

And things were worse in the middle ages, where you had no choice but to sleep with a few dozens other people in the main hall while whoever was your feudal lord slept on a separate room above the filth. "Making the bed" comes from throwing straw around in order to make it easier for the people to sleep on the floor.

People nowadays have no idea of how comfortable life has become since then.
