The latter requires an intimate understanding of what makes a piece of writing pleasurable to read and imagine, and not necessarily much practical knowledge of carnal intimacy (although it could help). In other words, the key to writing a good erotic scene is knowing how to convey emotion, and doesn't strictly require specific knowledge about sex.
