I'm trying to do some sort of short artbook/guide-to-a-series-that-actually-doesn't-exist sort of thing as a birthday for a close friend (if it works out) and apart from the obvious stuff like character age, size and stuff the things I found varied quite much. I like to think of programming the engineering way, its a tool for solving problems. Unless you have a problem to solve learning to use the tool is kinda pointless. Then you have two routes to pick from:
1. PHP + Drupal/Wordpress
2. Python + Django

- PHP is probably easier, but it's completely targeted towards websites so doing a VN (not a web-vn) with that would be silly. Scraping and scripts are no problems.

- Python is good too, and working with Django can be pretty nice sometimes since you don't have to write queries manually. Personally I don't like the forced indentation of Python but I can live with it. For web scraping you have libraries like Beautifulsoup.

All kinds really, using all kinds of different engines and frameworks. All where 2D though, as finding artists with 3D modeling experience proved infinitely hard. Simple platformers and puzzle/boardgame-like-games were very common, but I've been through pretty much every genre i think.

We basically worked in smaller groups (~4-5) where we used 1 week to brainstorm up a concept and a simple design doc. Then 3 on actual implementation. Then we presented what we had done so far to everybody present, and the group itself decided if it wanted to continue on the project or split the group and start anew (with other people). The setup worked really great imho, but again, the quality of the game really depends on the people you get in your group. Motivation was always the biggest hurdle, never skill.

I think having Janny on the hero side could give a lot of dynamic. In my previous post, it probably sounded like Janny would be the main character (She's a side character. I was looking at the Janny picture and typed her name twice by mistake. Call me foolish).

People need to stop shouting that nonsense once and for all. It's annoying, it's fake and programmers like me knowing how "easy" it is to get an artist are insulted.

Just because you saw 3~4 exceptions, which were mainly about friends helping each others, doesn't mean that it's like that. You DO NOT find people to help you with a project just because you've got everything with placeholders. The reality is that you can only find artists if you have money, period.

That is not restricted to AGDG. I've browsed numerous boards about game-making, and it's always about the same goddamn problem. And actually, that problem is probably not even why most programmers are complaining. If some guy don't want to give for free something he made, that's perfectly fine.
The problem starts when people wants to play games everywhere but don't a singe fucking resource for this (be it art, music, even storyline tips) because they expect you, the programmer making a fan-game for free, to do all the job by yourself and calls you names if you don't.

You don't tell an artist that he also has to be a pencil-maker.
You don't tell a musician that he also has to be a woodcutter to make his damn instruments.
You don't tell a female teacher that she has to give birth to the children for running a class.
That's fucking ridiculous.

Also, most programmers don't give a fuck about sharing bits of code, programs, logics.. while artists are the exact opposite, just take a look at the mess that is Deviant Art.

I'm not saying that you need to be or find a high-quality artist, but the graphics are still important for the game, unless you're making another #78th minecraft or cube-adventure.

Also we're in /jp/, so obviously we're talking about games with cute little girls, but for them to be cute you still had to draw and animate them correctly. I'm pretty sure the /jp/ project thread reached #15 without a single artist willing to do something about it.
