Why do people think killing is wrong?

Not just murder, which is a crime, but any act of killing another human being.

What is the basis for it? "Thou shalt not kill" is a gross simplification, and I wish people remembered it as "Thou shalt not kill unjustifiably" or something.

And the whole deal with superheroes not killing is because of censorship and children. The writers always make up excuses, but in real life I would be pretty pissed off if Superman DIDN'T kill that alien about to commit mass murder.
