Honestly, anon, I can't disagree with OP, and I think it has a lot to do with the idea in the west that indie games are "cool" and "obscure", and with these ideas come the stereotypes of every indie game ever. Old-school graphics, platforming, abstract enviroment, simplistic and sometimes supposedly deep plots (see Braid), etc. Somehow, I have this feeling that doujin games have more freedom in terms of the culture that has been built around them. I mean, sure, Touhou fangames are everywhere, but many of them attempt unique ideas, or at least do a decent job in parodying other game styles (that super robo wars touhou game comes into my mind now). Also, the whole deal with horror doujin games that spawned off from Yume Nikki were a really interesting phenomenon.

Its not that western indie games are bad, theres plenty of good ones, but shit ton of developers just make YET ANOTHER LOLRANDOM PLATFORMER. If they would actually stopped trying to copy some metroid/mario shit good things would be more noticeable.

Because the Japanese have higher IQs and a better education system.

I get what you mean. Game being officialy dead since 2007 or something also plays a huge role in this.
I believe there are some community mods like the mods which allow you to swap moves or play as boss characters/monsters. Netplay was never finished though.
One day I'd like to finish framedata tables not really useful for playable characters and how leveling AGI stat affects it.

Playing as a monster is fun. Some of their movesets are actually pretty usable, my favorite being Male Thief Bug (the boxing cockroach). The only problem is that if you die the game crashes, and you can't beat stage 2 because you get stuck in one of the cutscenes if you're a non-player character.
