Yes it is a mix of shinto and Buddhism. Buddhism already has lasting tales of saints converting demons, ogers, half demons and Shinto beleives everything has a spirit with tales/mystic island based stories shared with the Ainu dating all the way back to the Jomon people settling in the islands.

A lot of people here willbboth declarebit all to be bull shit, but also truth. I do beleive such demon, ogers, oni, different beings born into this world in creation that hinder on darkness and light exist all around the world, yet amassed in the hidden corners of Japan. Shinto Gods nees prayers to thrive, thus so to applies tobthe other things in beleif. Seeing is beleiving and those that have lost sight are the ones to be spirited away; those that go missing without a trace.

There are things bellow, above,in our forests, and mountins that modern man claims false human imagination in religion to create power structure. How quick they forget how wise we are as humans.

When I lived in the states, I had a loose interest in shintoism, but without shrines, it seemed pointless to pursue. Being on this island though, I almost feel like these things are real, in my body, not necessarily my mind. There's a powerful feeling that everything is inhabited, whether people live there or not.

The plain buildings with empty windows, and the big houses in the country.. Life goes on, even when the people are gone and the lights go out. It's very scary sometimes, being out at night, or even in broad daylight. So much history has been laid on the ground under your feet, and you can feel it. A lot of things in Japan just have this ethereal quality, like it could be destroyed in seconds, but by divine protection, they haven't.

I could definitely see how so much superstition comes out of such a small place.
