Personally, I see that as pure marketing. People report having spiritual experiences when racing a car and winning. People report having spiritual experiences when they feel happy. I mean, to me, it basically means that someone did something and can't explain why they are feeling the way they are feeling. It doesn't mean there was real "magic" on it, that's just the way they are describing it.

Like a lot of things, it is what you make of it.
If you want it to be magical you can make it that way with your own obsession or willingness to enjoy it.
You could look in the mirror and wonder at the fragile beauty you see, or you could focus on the fact that the mask doesn't allow you to see very well at all.
You could feel the fabric of the hadatai and feel a warm embrace, or you could feel claustrophobic and sweaty.

At the end of the day you are giving up a lot (like the ability to speak, and a full range of vision) just to be able to look a certain way. But isn't that what all cosplay really is?

So yeah, you enjoy it if you want to.

The mask is around $1,1k , and can reach up to $2,5k

I personally don't recommend to go down the path of making one yourself, not only you'll have an overhead of costs, you will also be dependant on your skills, which in case you're not sure about that, they'd probably suck.

The costs to DIY involve, sculpting and casting a model, then using FRP to create the shell, painting it, adding wigs and styling (usually 2 or 3), and messing with the final details (like several coats of paiting or sealer)

I think we can just leave this with the fact that this is an expensive hobby.

3D printing is also an option for making kig masks, especially if you're already good with 3D modeling programs. That's how I make my masks (I have my own printers, but if you have a hackerspace with a 3D printer near you, you might not have to buy your own). It simplifies the process somewhat (it's possible to maintain symmetry automatically, and you don't have to deal with FRP resin fumes). Also, it allows you to make masks for cheaper if you want to take commissions because there's no need to buy clay or silicone to start a new design and it is possible to make a fully custom mask by starting from an existing model and adjusting the shape (I can make fully custom masks for less than some makers' generic masks).

Yes, but the few 3D-printed masks that I've seen so far are rather poorly designed. If you are who I think you are, then I guess somebody's going to practice their designing skills a lot more before 3D-printed masks can compete against traditionally-created masks.

Care to tell me what you think is off in the masks I made so far? Of course, that's assuming you actually want me to improve. I'm very much open to constructive criticism, as in pointing out specific things that you think I should change, as opposed to just telling me my masks are ugly. I do know that there are people who don't want to listen to constructive criticism, but I certainly am not one of them. I know there are things I can definitely improve, and certainly want to be told if I missed something.

One thing I am definitely changing in all future masks is using internally-installed eyes instead of external ones (which is an easy enough change to make), and using printable vinyl instead of paper for eyes (I'm also going to use vinyl instead of plastic folders or paper for eyebrows/lashes).

I also know that the finish on the masks I've made hasn't perfect, which can be fixed pretty easily by more rounds of acetone and sanding (I only used two on my last mask).

I certainly do want you to improve, since your masks are the cheapest in terms of PPV so far. Also because I hate the proportions of Wyu's masks and I want somebody else in the West with better ideas and execution than him.

Anyways, from the limited amount of knowledge that I possess (and basing this one on this picture on the left):

1. The lips/mouth. The area on the left/right of the mouth's insides (inside edge of the lips) aren't as sharp as I imagined a mask should be. One might blame it on regular personal 3D printers not having enough resolution to do so yet, but current mid-range 3D printers are already advanced enough to do so. Otherwise I imagine fixing this this would be trivial.
2. Eye holes. They are too big, to the point of being a distraction from the eyes itself. And they doesn't fit the style of the eyes. Moving the holes to less noticeable areas (be creative) and using a darker inside plastic should probably fix it. The trade-off might be more tint to your view, but sacrifices are unavoidable in kigurumi after all.
3. Wig. Won't comment much since I've had little experience with wigs, but they look a bit messy and unkempt in most, if not all of your photos.

That's all I can think of. I'd comment on the eye's shininess and depth too, but I see you have an idea on how to fix that so we'll see how it goes. Also I won't comment on the finishing, I have no experience in painting things.

Extending from #1 and after studying the 3D model, I think the lips might need less details too. A disproportionate distribution of details on an object makes it look a bit awkward and fucks with people's focus and attention.

The mouth was actually another thing that I had noticed was a bit off. The mouth of the current version is better than the old one, but I was thinking that it could still use more improvement.

The eye holes are bigger because I just scaled the eyes I used on the original version, which was smaller. I should try reducing the size somewhat. I had also noticed that my eyes are visible through the eyeholes in some pictures. And I don't use plastic in the eyeholes. I use mesh, because it doesn't fog like plastic would. I think the mesh I'm using is too coarse, so that's why my eyes are visible through the eyeholes.

The wig is a bit messy because I was carrying her in a bag and the hairnets that came with the wigs are crap. I need to get myself some better nets. Also, I haven't sprayed her hair, which is probably something I should do.

Somebody else had said that the cheeks are a little off as well. Actually, that was on a commission, but they did say I should maybe change it on Erika as well.

I think you should invest in some sort of final coat over the paint. I see the paint is kinda rough because it lacks something, I don't know what it is (because I have no experience in painting) but I guess there's something else to finish stuff. Also, what about using the same paint the japanese kigs use? (I think SIGMA posted in their site the spray cans they were selling with the Ena's in that special offer of them).

Yeah, that would probably also be a good idea. I'd want something that's matte and doesn't produce strong fumes though (it gets too cold in the winter here to spray it outside)

i was wondering about that actually, it might just be me but a lot of masks seem to have a finish thats a bit to shiny to be matte, i think it might be a satin finish?
although im not very experienced with this, it does seem to give masks a much more smooth look while not making them look completely shiny

Frankly speaking I would have suffered from a sense of inferiority for owing only a uniformed mask, which drives me to want a new, acutual anime girl kigurumi.
What do you think of uniformed masks such as EnaTio or ayame?

I think generic masks are fine for original characters. But I definitely think that kigs of established characters should be custom. That's a big reason why I 3D print masks; I want to make custom masks more accessible (since it's way cheaper than sculpting and casting). It seems like full customs aren't especially common outside Japan, and I would like to see that change.

I really agree with the marketing guy there, besides the marketing part.
Though I think it depends.

GKO uses the same sculpt for a lot of masks, and just by changing how the eyes look, the effect is changed overall. The problem isn't so much in the sculpt whatsoever, it's more a matter of choice, knowing if it fits the character or not, and how much effort you put in changing it, or perceiving what should be changed.

That's why also the reason why Wyu's approach is doomed to failure at the moment. They take a generic shell (which some of us might criticize, but forget that for a moment), don't change the eye design in any of them (they just change the color, they do nothing about the shape), and pretend every mask is unique and special.

Not that GKO approach is perfect too, they could improve in wig quality.
