I think they're pretty cool, but it's hard to believe in their practicality, to the point where transformations are a cooler mechanic.

Ultimately it goes down to the old dues ex machina binary system: magic for people who don't care about realism (transformations) and sci-fi for people who do (mecha.) However, the essence of sci-fi ever since Asimov and William Gibson and etc. is for its believability to be just as much of an essential part of the formula as remarkability. It's cooler to read/play/see about a giant robot if you know it's totally feasible that such a thing would actually be made. However, there's almost no situation where humanoid, legged robots would be better than robots of some other form and gait.

From an evolutionary standpoint, the 'purpose' of our body, and the reason for its structure is to be able to run longer than any other creature. Modern neuroscience is actually starting to think that even the reason our brain is so powerful is that evolutionary pressure rewarded a brain which could produce a refined and energy-efficient bipedal gait, which was by nature larger than its predecessors because of the huge complexity of movement, and that all of our other heightened mental faculties came about as an 'accident'; something like how spider venom was initially non-poisonous, and was used as a tool to liquify conventionally-killed prey's insides for more efficient food consumption, but because only a small mutational step needed to be taken to overwrite this initially large evolutionary jump into a venom, spider venom was what happened. The thought is that it's the same with our immensely powerful brains: they began as a tool for us to move more efficiently than other animals, but after some evolutionary shenanigans they started being used for other purposes too since most or all of the hardware was already there. (I got cut of by the character limit)

The purposes of our body and the purposes and capabilities of a mecha are fundamentally different. First of all, mecha do not need to self-regenerate since they can be repaired, so there's no reason for them to be made from biological materials, which by nature cannot perform the same way mechanisms made of steel can (especially rotational movement and high velocity movement.) Structures like propellers and wheels, either for the heart (the human heart has a per-pulse blood discharge of only about 60% of its capacity, while a propeller-based mechanism can discharge 100% in less time) or for locomotion are not possible on humans, but are totally possible on mecha. Second, as I said, humans are optimized for long-distance running, while mecha are purposed with fighting, where energy conservation in the gait is not important. Even if you did for some reason need a mecha with a highly energy-efficient gait, it would be far more efficient to use wheels rather than human legs.

For these reasons, mecha would not resemble humans whatsoever if they were to be made, so mecha are really weak sci-fi mechanics.

Sometimes it is genuinely hard to get a certain tone across though. In real life it's obvious when someone is being sarcastic, but on the internet it's difficult. You could add something like "(sarcasm)" but then it becomes less snappy and you can never tell if that's sarcastic, too.

So occasionally it's nice to read, "Go fuck yourself :-)", instead of the much less pleasant, "Go fuck yourself", or even an eyesore like, "LE GO F*** U'RESELF xDDD".

Newsgroups and mailings lists have my respect for not falling prey to the anti-emoticon meme, while still realizing they can be overused.

That's because sarcasm is almost entirely tone-based (although exceptions exist; 'deadpan sarcasm', which is even hard to spot in real life and can be likened to Internet 'irony'). However, all emotions, like mirth or anger or happiness, can be conveyed, unlike sarcasm, using only word choice rather than relying on tone.
