Well that's true. It's just that Setsuna's route was a really big disappointment for me. Everything just goes too smoothly and by end I simply didn't care anymore.

On the other hand you have Kazusa's true end which feels a lot more believable, like it is the natural conclusion to the game.

Katahane is a beautiful classic and should absolutely be first on your list if you haven't read it yet.

Akai Ito and Aoi Shiro were already mentioned. Both are good.

Shirogane Otome is a nice one that came out this year.

I'm told Moshiraba has yuri in it too but haven't played it yet.

Finally, it's an OELVN but Sugar's Delight is quite cute.

There is sex but it's not the main focus of the story, and what romance there is doesn't go much beyond ship tease level. Besides that it's a great, compelling game with a huge likeable cast and atmosphere for days. One of my personal favorites.

Only loosely. The general setting and mythology is the same and there are a few characters from past chapters that get referenced (and, more rarely, actually appear) in subsequent games, but they're largely stand-alone. Playing all the games in order will somewhat heighten your enjoyment since you'll be able to catch the references, but playing one of them on their own won't detract from your ability to enjoy it.

The webnovels are rather heavier on this, in that most of them act like bridges to the next novel in the series, so the Inganock ones included a character who would later appear in Sharnoth, Sharnoth's had some from Valusia, and so on.

At this time last year, I downloaded Bishoujo Mangekyou -Wasurenagusa- for the sole purpose of masturbating to the CGs because I couldn't read or understand anything, CTRLing through everything in between, usually quitting right after I'm finished.

Today, with the same intentions, I loaded up Megumi's scene, making the obvious choices but was surprised to find that I actually understood the dialogue and basically started reading the VN from the middle. Except right after that is where they drop the huge fucking plot bomb on you and having that as a starting point is kind of retarded.

Is it worth continuing for the story? How much will I miss out on if I don't start over? I remember a bunch of warnings about MC's dark secret and a lot of sex but not much else.

Incidentally, this would be my second visual novel ever if I went through with it.

There is a bit more to it than that, and I'd say if you feel that the stuff you've found out thus far would have been worth it if you read from the beginning then it would probably be worth finishing at least. There's not a lot left after that, but there's some. Starting over probably wouldn't be worth it, as it's mostly foreshadowing and buildup (and sex). Though I do think the buildup worked well towards the reveal, it's probably not all that interesting once you know the tweest.

Finished Totono. Shimokura proved again that he has some brilliant ideas and that fat girls from role playing forums have better writing skills. It's too slow and boring and when something start happening after a few minutes it's a sleepfest again. Oh, what an irony, one of the good scenes was even translated to english. So, here you have it: watch that and you experience the best thing that VN could give to you, besides other 2 scenes there is nothing to enjoy: dull writing and oh god, I pray for you to not end up in situation where you have to delete your saves and go all the way again, that is considering my warning won't have any effect on you.
