I want to re-read Umineko but I just want to make sure I've got all the characters' relationships worked out in my head.

So we have Beatrice Castiglioni, the woman Kinzo met and who "gave him the gold". What happened to her, how did she die?

Then we have Beatrice the second, the daughter of Beatrice Castiglioni and Kinzo. Is this the Beatrice that Rosa accidentally got killed? Is this also the Beatrice of the Golden Witch legend?

Then there's the child of Beatrice 2 and Kinzo. That's Kanon/Shannon/Yasu/Beato, right? And also the character Clair represents?

How do the four Ushiromiya siblings fit in, they were all children Kinzo had with a woman after he'd met Beatrice Castiglioni? What happened to their mother? Or was Beatrice their mother?

Last of all, how about Rudolf's secret about Battler's birth? It's revealed in Twilight that Battler was Kyrie's son and Asumu had the stillbirth, not Kyrie. This was Battler's story though, so can we trust this? Or is it still possible that Rudolf's secret is something else? Beato said in red that Battler wasn't Asumu's son but that doesn't make him Kyrie's son either.

Natural unnatural causes.
Irrelevant to the story, she just died.

>Then we have Beatrice the second, the daughter of Beatrice Castiglioni and Kinzo. Is this the Beatrice that Rosa accidentally got killed? Is this also the Beatrice of the Golden Witch legend?
She was a Beatrice but not the Beatrice we know on the Gameboard.
She was only born 6 years before Battler came back.

>Or is it still possible that Rudolf's secret is something else?
It isn't.

Battler's red in episode 4(?) was that he was named Battler and that there was someone named Battler (the kid who is dead) but that he isn't born from Usumu.

You can't get any more confirmation than that.

His name is battler, a battler existed and has a mother named Asumu but the Battler we know does not come from Asumu.

Umineko sold like shit and was shit.

Ryukishi thought that you only needed ep 1-4 to solve the mystery. Why bother with something that isn't part of the mystery.

Ep 5-8 are fanfics created with the commulation of both Tohya and mystery fans. Ep 1-4 were created by Beatrice and Tohya independently and are more accurate to solve the mystery than ep 5-8 which is why those first episode got an anime and the rest do not need an adaptation though it would be fun to see Erika and Will animated.

>Ryukishi thought that you only needed ep 1-4 to solve the mystery. Why bother with something that isn't part of the mystery.
I knew that he claims that, but did he really decline to finish the anime just because he thought it could be solved in the first 4 eps? I've never heard of anyone doing that (especially not the anime, though I admit that I haven't watched it since /jp/ told me not too). Surely he can't be that arrogance (well, after EP 8, maybe).

Ep 1-2 were Beato, ep 3-4 were Tohya, ep 5-6 was Tohya working with Mystery fans who were pissed that Battler was an incompitent fool and wanted their own detective in the story so they can have their mystery solved rather than let however the author wants Battler to miss information.

Ep 7 was ?????

Ep 8 was the mystery fans (to note that Bern is the collective consciousness of mystery fans) presenting their own gameboard mystery version of Rokkenjima with the approximate answer they think happened on the island (tea party 7) and Tohya solving it and calling it out on it.
All the while Tohya being conflicted about giving the answer or not and deciding not to give the solution in the end.

The only episode other than 1-4 that can be accepted is ep 5 but it's only half completed because the mystery fans stopped playing the moment they agreed on an answer.
The trial in that episode is eerily similar to a forum agreement of deciding the culprit of the episode.

Doubt it.

The underlying theme of the story is to move on in life.

The VN was written by Tohya for Ange to let go of her fruitless quest to find the truth. To just accept the past and move on.

If Ange wrote it, it would defeat the purpose of the theme.

He's a fictional character.

The only thing I don't understand is who or what Will represents (yes I know he's the ideal personification of Battler but it doesn't explain what the fuck he's doing in ep7 if it wasn't written by Tohya)

I still can't wrap my head around who wrote ep 7. To me, it's really the only mystery left in Umineko.

If Bern represents the mystery fans seeking a solution to Rokkenjima, how did they find the past history of Kinzo? Who told them? How did they find out? If Tohya wrote the story, how did he know?

That whole episode makes no sense to me metaphorically.

Internet investigation. Besides, they were wrong about Kinzo's backstory. It's very heavily hinted in episode 4 and outright stated in the tea party of episode 7 that Kinzo and Beatrice killed all the soldiers on the island for the gold whereas the gameboard in episode 7 paints them as victims of circumstance caught up in a battle of greed between the Japanese and Italians which conveniently leads to everyone dying but the pair themselves.

Shkanontrice says that Kanon and Genji cut the chain before anyone arrived, killed Eva and Hideyoshi, draw the magic circle and then when everyone arrived they said that the chain was locked when they arrived and no one answered the door (the chain is never seen intact by a reliable perspective).

Rosatrice has George knock on the door and ask to be let in, which Eva obliges too (George being probably the only person they would let into the room and trust completely in this situation). George then murders them and hides in the room. Kanon and Genji arrive and then leave to go get the saw to cut the chain, Rosa then sneaks in, swaps places with George, draws the magic circle and hides under the bed.

Well, most would say Kumasawa, Genji, and Nanjo as constant accomplices, but my theory is that Rudolf and Kyrie were up to something. Ange got a safe-deposit box full of money just like Kumasawa's retarded son and Nanjo's son, but supposedly Ange had just gotten sick that very day so Yasu shouldn't have been able to know that she would survive.

Other than that, the set of accomplices changes every time. In EP 1 it was Eva and Hideyoshi, who thought it was a game, EP 2 was Rosa, who knew it was murder, and Gohda, who is fucking stupid and probably thought it was a game. EP 3 has Natsuhi and Krauss, who, according to that TIP that outlines the accomplice system, did it to protect Jessica. EP 4 would have been Kyrie and Rudolf, and shit got way out of hand quick.

How does Shannon do it then? You defend your argument by saying it would be impossible for Rosa because she would have no way of planning ahead but the same applies equally to Shannon as even if Rudolf and Kyrie are accomplices (something that has never been confirmed by R07 who Shkanonfags follow like nobodies business), even Rudolf and Kyrie could not have predicted in advance that Ange would get sick. It's very possible Rosa sent the letters from the airport too. That's based off an assumption for which there is no evidence. If the only evidence about Ange's illness was that she 'vomited the morning of the family conference' then there's nothing disproving she didn't vomit the day before that and the day before that. Perhaps she'd been vomiting on and off for several weeks. This is another assumption. I'm not saying your theory is invalid, but mine isn't either, both exist within the catbox, which means I have an explanation and you have an explanation therefore neither of our theories are disproved by this one point, therefore you cannot say "a letter arrived for Ange therefore Rosa could not possibly be Beatrice".

The fact that everyone had planned on her coming, and all of the details point to the fact that it was a new episode. If it was innocent, why lie to Battler about it?

>I have an explanation and you have an explanation therefore neither of our theories are disproved by this one point, therefore you cannot say "a letter arrived for Ange therefore Rosa could not possibly be Beatrice".
After Rosa arrives late to the airport, does she ever leave Battler's sight? To the best of my knowlege, they left pretty quickly after that. No, your defense doesn't make any sense. Whether Ange was actually sick or not is only going to spare Kyrie some extra work to fake her daughter's illness. This is completely different from the assertion that no explanation is necessary for the letter that Ange received because "everything is in the catbox".

There is both physical evidence disproving the notion that Rosa sent the letter upon discovering Ange's absence (letter was sent several days prior to the conference, handwriting on envelope identical to "Beatrice's") and there is a complete absence of motive for Rosa to be sending such a letter to Ange in the first place. Unless these questions are answered, you can't claim that the Rosatrice theory has equal standing with the Shkannontrice theory in the cat box.

They did, but nobody is surprised by the fact she didn't come, because her illness is known to the group.
>After Rosa arrives late to the airport, does she ever leave Battler's sight?
We never entirely see Battler's perspective during the airport scene. It wouldn't be hard to excuse oneself during this time. George definitely does this when he goes to practise his proposal in the bathroom.
>>11474695
>There is both physical evidence disproving the notion that Rosa sent the letter upon discovering Ange's absence (letter was sent several days prior to the conference, handwriting on envelope identical to "Beatrice's") and there is a complete absence of motive for Rosa to be sending such a letter to Ange in the first place.
These same problems arise in Shkanontrice too. Shkanontrice theory, or the official theory, never has rudolf and kyrie as Shannon's accomplices. If you are intending to include them as accomplices then you are going against the official theory just as I am, you realise this?

Regardless, Rosa could've still sent the letter and if Ange did show up, she would've died and the letter would never have arrived so there's no harm in sending it in case Ange can't show up. Furthermore, it is an assumption to say that Ange's letter was sent several days prior to the conference and the hadnwriting on the envelope was identical to Beatrice's because Ange never inspects the letter she receives, she only has a vague memory of it. The assumption that Ange's letter was identical to that received by Kumasawa and Nanjo's family is just that, an assumption.

>Yes, we do. He's mischaracterizing people the entire time by saying how kind and great they are, then it's FALLLLLLING IM FAAAAAALING!!!, then a boat ride.
Nah, there's a couple of time skips. For example, in the first game George never leaves Battler's side, but in the second or third game, we see him practising the proposal in the bathroom. And there's a couple of time skips. I think this shows Rosa could've excused herself for a few minutes.

Hey, if you don't have to follow R07 then I don't have to follow KNM. Though, admittedly, I'd rather not add accomplices where it suits me, as I think the more accomplices there are the weaker the theory is.

Does someone have an explanation for the stuff that's happening at the end of EP 2? Basically, with Battler surrendering to the witch and witnessing a party with goats et al. Battler got drunk, gave into the magic theory by the time Genji took him to the study, thus lost his detective's authority. That's the prevalent speculation at least. Simply by the existence of this miso soup and a lack of soy sauce, this level of reasoning is possible for Ryuugu Rena. What do you think, Keiichi-kun?

>Maria is nothing like Satoko
The Satoshi\Sakutaro thing didn't ring any bells? The child abuse they suffered while desperately maintaining the facade of happiness? The love of tricks? Being a bit delusional and willing to at least help with murder?

Do you need Ryu to come to your house and explain the similarities to you over tea or something? This was pretty obvious.

It happened with Higurashi. And then again with Umineko. Every time, half the fandom becomes vocally furious and drops out, and the other half quietly enjoys everything. My theory is that his ultimate goal is to continue halving his fanbase through successive works until he finds the One True Fan, the one that's left at the end of it all, so that he can retire and pass the torch to the next generation.

EP 5 was showing you Kinzo's relationship to Beatrice the 2nd. Battler was Kinzo, who had lost Beatrice the first and turned into essentially an empty shell of the man he once was. He wished so much that she would come back to him, but believed it to be impossible. Beatrice the 2nd was just a confused little girl who yearned for her father's love and approval. She knew that she had to become "Beatrice" for him, the one that he knew and loved, but had no information to really go on. A poor sheltered girl looking for affection, a broken man who's crazed with ideals of a dead woman somehow coming back to him.

That's what EP5 was showing with the whole chick Beato plot.

I like of the part of EP5 where Battler decides that he's going to let her be her own person and not make her into Beato, then, in like the very next scene, comes across the love duel and begins his plan to make her into Beato.

But of course, she wasn't Beato after that - he completely failed to bring that Beato back. The best he could do was "Lord BATTLER's Wife". The original Beato is dead and he is stuck with his delusions of her and the plaguing that not only did he kill her, but he didn't even try to understand her until it was too late.

The entire plot of EP6 is an allegory for the original Kinzo/Beatrice relationship.

(Bice // Trolltrice) dies and a new one is born (Kuwadorian Beatrice // Moetrice), but she's not the same. (Kinzo // Battler) locks himself in (his study // a closed room), leaving behind a mad riddle (the epitaph // logic error) for Beatrice to solve. (Sayo // the resurrected Beato) solves it and they are reunited.

Even Erika, by marrying Battler, plays a role in this allegory as the stand in for Kinzo's wife.

One can only ask if Battler hasn't faked the whole sixth game to get his waifu back. I found something interesting! This was the Japanese commander in chief during WWII.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isoroku_Yamamoto
>Yamamoto was born Isoroku Takano (高野 五十六 Takano Isoroku?) in Nagaoka, Niigata. His father was Takano Sadayoshi (高野 貞吉), an intermediate-rank samurai of the Nagaoka Domain. "Isoroku" is an old Japanese term meaning "56"; the name referred to his father's age at Isoroku's birth.
Then he became Yamamoto. Yamamoto, the doctor who ran the clinic in Sai. But that's a common name, so I might be overthinking it.

Definitely fat:
George
Hideyoshi (morbidly obese. How does he and Eva even have sex?)
Ange
Gohda (never trust a skinny chef)
Nanjo
Boat Captain
Mackeral boy (Kumasawa was probably a good cook)

Possibly fat:
Lambdadelta (seems to have a diet of constant candy, popcorn, and tea)
Maria (from eating nothing but instant noodles and candy when Rosa away)
Erika (since her picture doesn't show a bad body, but her boyfriend still cheated on her, but of course, that might just be because she's a bitch)
Jessica (physical activity limited because she has to pretend to have asthma all the time, you'd think that she could get laid easily if she looked like she did in her picture)

This is what Ryukishi meant when he said that "very few people would reach the truth". You actually have to think in order to understand Yasu's motive.

Most people thought she was a "crazy maid with DID that killed everyone because Battler forgot about her" and dismissed Shkanontrice as a retarded "theory". This is why that half-assed Rosatrice theory even exists.

Ryukishi wasn't hinting at some "hidden truth" that only anti-Shkanontrice goats would reach. He was talking about how hard it is to understand Yasu.

I can pity Yasu and I don't like her. She doesn't come across as sympathetic, just pathetic. She was with Battler for a few days, tops, yet forms some freaky stalker feelings for him. And just why couldn't she have called him one the phone or sent him a letter? That is a two way street, Yasu! And if you don't want to be forced to decide between two lovers, you probably shouldn't pretend to be two separate people!

Now, how does understanding her make her any less of a crazy maid who killed everyone because Battler forgot about her? That's exactly what she is, and her (very, very) horrible life isn't an excuse for serial murder.

Really, what if someone finds out? Is Natsuhi going to take her down to the secret Ushiromiya shrine storage (that Yasu also bombed) and torture her for running up the long distance bill or having Genji smuggle a postage stamp to her?

That wasn't the point either. She just wanted to kill herself and possibly the entire family. She only did everything else because she could.

>Servants also aren't allowed to roleplay as two people, launder a billion yen of gold, or set off 900 ton of WWII era war munitions, but the fact that it's not allowed didn't seem to stop her.
She wasn't a servant when she did all those things, she was the head of the Ushiromiya family. And also furniture, that's why she didn't call Battler for the next two years.

>Really, what if someone finds out? Is Natsuhi going to take her down to the secret Ushiromiya shrine storage (that Yasu also bombed) and torture her for running up the long distance bill or having Genji smuggle a postage stamp to her?

>She wasn't a servant when she did all those things, she was the head of the Ushiromiya family. And also furniture, that's why she didn't call Battler for the next two years.
Maybe those last too, but Kanon definitely existed when Kinzo was alive, long enough for Kinzo to teach him how to shoot and offer him candy.

>She would be severely scolded and Natsuhi would fire her. She was still a servant at that point.
Natsuhi has no authority over the servents who bare the one winged eagle, which she has because of Genji's plan to get her close to Kinzo so Kinzo would recognize his child. Also, Genji would never have allowed her to be sent away. He could overrule Natsuhi on anything and tell her to ask the master and she'd have no recourse.

Not that Shannon knew this, but she still had school off the island and had days off, so it isn't as if she was trapped there.

>Shannon is really fucking shy.
If you're still trying to show that being crazy and pitiful isn't her overwhelmingly dominate features, then you aren't doing a very good job. Being shy isn't a good enough reason to wallow in self-pity so long that you're willing to kill.

Now that I think about it, Nonomiya is very similar to Yasu.

They were both butthurt kids with a massive power. Yasu had the bomb, the guns and ten tons of gold. What the fuck was Genji thinking? Nonomiya had all the bullies on his side before he realized it. He only wanted to take revenge on that girl by himself, but the other kids thought it was fun and shit got out of hand.

My DD is 9, nearly 10.

We bought some books - How to talk about Sex - is one I think. Another one is Where Do Babies Come From? I read them first, then I gave one to DD to look at (it was a cartoon book bt Babbette Cole) and we talked about it before I let her look at anything else.

She knows that a baby is made when a man & a woman have a special cuddle where he puts his willy inside the woman. She knows that a baby is made if one of the sperm meets an egg - she was worried that ALL the sperm would meet eggs and make thousands of babies!

We haven't covered contraception etc. She thinks you have to be married to have sex.

DD used to ask lots of questions and I found it really difficult to answer her and guage how much information to give. Since we read the books and talked about it she is fine - no questions for months.

>It's not a theory.
It is.

I personally don't care which theory is right but if Ryukishi ever wanted to state if it was real of not, he would have come fully clean about it. The fact that he isn't makes me suspicious.

Does it mean it's false? No, only not fully confirmed.

My biggest gripe about the whole thing is the actual narrator who tells ep 7 is completely untrustworthy.
All other episodes have a definate contribution of either Beatrice with ep 1-2 or Tohya with episode 2-3-5-6-8.
But episode 7 is void of either of them which makes me question where all this information of Yasu came from. It sure as hell wasn't Tohya since he cut all contact with the mystery fans after they decided to go full rampage and just fuck with everything in ep 6.

Hell, at the start of ep 8, Battler mentions how he'll open the board one last time for Ange, meaning he did close it at the end of ep 6 but only reopened it in ep 8.

The responsibility of convincing the reader that the author is a quality writer lies mostly with the author himself. If you just read the first 6 volumes (all I could bear) anyone would have a poor impression. It is unreasonable to expect a reader to read every single volume before passing judgement.

I guess on a more stylistic level I found the heavy use of magical elements hard to put up with.

Kawabata killed everyone on his ship, dumped the bodies, took the gold, rigged the bomb, and went home.

Eva survived, but couldn't tell because Kawabata had hired some the Yamainu surround her at all times to keep her silent. The soldier that gets defeated by Satoko is shown to be Amakusa (uses the same anti-aging lotion as Ikuko), so it's proven that she is constantly surrounded by them.

Ange read about this in the diary, that's why she had to kill both Amakusa and the captain. She had proof so conclusive that she was willing to die at see to avenge her family. He had worked for Kinzo his entire life and knew about the Kumadorian, Beatrice Jr., and most probably the gold. The existence of the ep1 and ep2 bottles confuse the hell out of me.

That they do not describe the real event is obvious, and it makes it clear they were written in advance. To follow the rules they'd have to be written after Yasu became the head. It is either written by Maria and Yasu, or by Yasu pretending to be Maria.

Why write these ahead of time? I can only think of two real reasons. Either they wanted Battler to read it and solve it, or they wanted to run a fake murder mystery on the island. If they honestly wanted to run a fake murder mystery, they would have described HOW it was going to be done, instead of just fill it with magic. (Doesn't help to go to Krauss and say "please play with us. According to this plan you fight Goats")

So we are left with the idea that Yasu wanted to stomp Battler with a mystery novel to crack at the meeting, and as things look it would be to make him realize Yasu loves him.

So ironically nothing as amazing as a mystery happened. They just read one, solved it, argued over Yasu being the head, and blew up the island.

I find the only way I can take the mystery stuff seriously in umineko is to pretend the ending doesn't exist.

it feels to me like I'mTotallyNotBattlerNopeNopeNope is a shitty coward who can't accept himself for who he is, and that he would, to that end, even cast away the only member of his family who wasn't an asshole from the start, just pisses me off more on top of the whole "but none of that stuff actually happened, it's just this chickenshit trying to discard himself" angle. it feels to me that BT's death resulted in R07 copping out on the whole thing.

maybe that makes me a goat.
