Talking about it, takeshi posted an article of him reviewing the English Wikipedia article of Denpa Song. Overall he liked it and he said it was impressive how we could talk about it in a relaxed manner and be mostly right about everything (it seems the Japanese argue about it much more than we do; What's denpa-kei!? That's not denpakei!! etc).

The only thing is that, while the information was correct and accurate, he noted "the article talked only about the otaku part of it". I don't know what else is there, and I don't think most people do. We are za otaku culture anthropologists after all, I don't know much about anything else about Japan.

Well the denpa song bot sometimes links things that sound pretty normal, like with male singers and all. There was one song where the guy was complaining how no one ever calls him, and then there was that construction work song too, I think it was something about tearing down buildings but I didn't really pay much attention. Oh, the newest song the bot has linked happens to be actually relevant:

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1577055

So I guess anything can be considered to be "denpakei" if the lyrics are weird and catchy enough, but I'm not really sure how that's different from other comedy and parody songs. And like you said, I don't think there's much interest in those here.

I can't really see any other explanation, but like I said, I'm not sure why they can't call them parody songs or something.

I guess they could also use 電波ソング just to mean an earworm? I guess that kinda fits the radio wave thing, what with the song getting "broadcast" nonstop into your head. The Japanese Wikipedia actually has an article on earworms, but doesn't seem to mention anything about denpa, although overall it just seems to be going over the same ground as the English article.

Actually, it feels like I'm just completely off with this train of thought, but here's something I found pretty interesting (from the earworm article):

>Jean Harris, who murdered Dr. Herman Tarnower, was obsessed by the song "Put the Blame on Mame", which she first heard in the film Gilda. She would recall this regularly for over 33 years and could hold a conversation while playing it in her mind.

Eroge that have nice denpa songs usually are mediocre, but there are exceptions. The best thing to do is to look at the EGS score before trying them. Good score is 80 or more, it also has a "arousing" score that's useful for nukige.

Denpa is wide, depends on what kind.

If you refer to the cute-ish style, you might want to make slightly detuned saw synths with strong chorus on them for the main lead. Also lots of chiptune sounds and square synths (with chorus on them). For chimes you want FM chimes (with chorus on them). Lots of arpeggiators. Orchestra hits and low quality drum and strings samples might work too. Electrical guitars will make your sound richer.

You can do this with any good VST, but I recommend Kontakt/Battery for samples, and Sylenth1/z3ta+/Massive for making your synths. FM8 is nice for FM sounds and Peach for chiptunes.

>The only thing I can do is to read what knowledgeable people have to say. Besides takeshi0406, I think other knowledgeable people are takumiP and mossya (moss_me). And DnS of course.

I appreciate that, we're closing in on 6 years online and 300+ articles after all. So let me reiterate the offer, because there are some real knowledgeable fans here.

I'm looking for someone to take over as main writer on denpanosekai.com. I just don't have the free time anymore and perhaps my creative juices have run a little dry with all these contracts I've been taking on. It'd be neat if someone could come up with a new layout too, the current one's getting stale.

I'll be covering M3 of course but I'm not sure I'll have time for this winter comiket. Heck I still haven't said anything about the new MOSAIC.WAV album yet. Both Mandi and I would stay on board as occasional writers but we really need a new driving force or the site will just wither.

There aren't many rules other than NO DOWNLOADS and ideally keeping negative/unrelated topics to yourself. I remember one day someone wanted me to publish an anti ULTRA-PRISM text that went something like "Koike Masaya is the cancer that is killing denpa"... that's a no go.

We are lucky enough to be known/quoted/loved by many Japanese fans and artists so it's important to keep a high level of quality. You want to ask Katahotori, nanahira, KuKuDoDo, satsuki, かめりあ or MOSAIC.WAV a question? I got all these people on speed dial... and so could you. Which reminds me Sham Studio's manager still bugs me occasionally about translating the rest of their website...

You want the keys, you get in touch...

Surprises me that you lurk around here.

That's sad news. The blog was really an innovator in the west, I really wish I had known about it sooner. Real life always fucks up everything huh, but it's a good thing that you've been doing well.

I'd love to help but I'm not made for blogging, I'm too lazy and I would write like, 1 article per year. Not helpful.

>There aren't many rules other than NO DOWNLOADS
Well I think it goes without saying, we all know it's illegal but we do it anyway here. Still it seems that these threads have caught the attention of some Japanese fans and I think I saw someone from Odenpa Studio talking about it with mossya, so I get a bit reluctant to share sometimes.

>I remember one day someone wanted me to publish an anti ULTRA-PRISM text that went something like "Koike Masaya is the cancer that is killing denpa"...
Eh why? Did he specify reasons? I mean he was one of the pioneers with UNDER17 and all.

I realize I'm over a week late for this, but I would recommend looking into Honey came Lab. They're newish and just released their first full album recently. I feel like they have a similar vocal balance, and are also more "cute" and less "crazy." I'd also recommend anything かたほとり, as he is pretty heavily involved with ちぃむdmp☆ and writes some damned cute songs.

It's hard to find anything like だめぽじゃないですでんぱですっ!! specifically, because it has a lot of unique things going for it. It was kind of released as a stop-gap while recovering from some drama and focusing on other projects, and as such is made entirely of covers of VOCALOID music which were already recorded. If you didn't know, mmbk and Kaorin kind of got together to form ちぃむdmp☆ collaborating on said covers. Both of them have paired up with other cover vocalists, and you might try just searching NicoNico to find some more similar things.

So the other day I listened to denpa while tripping on LSD and it was the most beautiful and happiest experience I've had lately.

I can't even summarize everything, but what I enjoyed the most were

山本椛, ARM - ハクレイデイリー
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJMSNvHVOQY
For some reason I got hippie imagery with this, probably due to the vintage sounding guitars and "Lalala"s in the chorus. I couldn't stop laughing while chanting Hakurei Daily. What a fun song, christ.
タオい惑星
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyzg2O02hsM
What a nice track, I could feel like traveling through different planets and worlds while lots of chibis jumped with me in the pre-verse chant. Fun as hell, and I got to appreciate the beautiful chorus and lyrics.

Also with
恋してる空
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raJsw0MNUcU
I feel like I felt real love, and saw the pink hearts from the cover everywhere. The lyrics are about what you feel when you're love with someone, I thought of love as a cliche but with this somehow I gained respect of love as a beautiful thing that we all need to be happy.

Listening to 冬もマシンガン also completely blew my mind. Fuck. Other songs that I enjoyed very much are ave;new's 続・生意気☆いちごミルクDAYO!!, MOSAIC.WAV's Love Cheat and ココナナなのね, She See Love and ワイルドじいさん from ぱんださんようちえん.

Thanks to everyone who shares and enjoys this music, I had an amazing experience. I love you all.

That's surprising. What got me into denpa was MOSAIC.WAV, and I was surprised to see that some people here don't like them.

Talking about MOSAIC.WAV, here are the official (short) 5.1 versions of 百合星人ナオコサン and フォトンベルト観光ホテル ripped from the Naoko-san OVA. If you have a 5.1 setup (and a player/sound card that supports it) you'll enjoy this. If you don't, well, listening to the separate channels is interesting too.

That's because, honestly, he's much better at hardcore, but he has some nice denpa songs (the old ones), and リズナ is pretty cute.

I used to listen to a lot of J-Core back in the ~SRPC0015 times, when it wasn't just UK Hardcore. It's pretty nice that DJ CHUCKY, M-Project, no+chin and USAO found their way to Bemani, but I'm even happier now that MOSAIC.WAV and ARM did too. using foobar2000, does anyone have a way to have the library show only cues that split one image file? i really don't want to have to split my image files, but if i allow cues in the library, it picks up every cue i have, most of which refer to files that are already in my library, and a lot don't even work because they still point to a wav

Net labels are awesome. Some artists from Joji Records often participate in Bunkai-kei or Altema Records. I was surprised to see that they mostly work on ambient and glitch, which I love. Noise net labels are great too.

I really wish more moe styled music hit net labels, the closest we have is lolicore but that's a western thing and honestly not very good.

Also she had a couple denpa songs in OreImo. いいえ、トムは妹に対して性的な興奮を覚えています and めてお☆いんぱくと. (The OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWEVCbaAabc))

It ends on January but at this pace it seems they'll barely hit the first objective (JPY 10,000 = Full version CD). I feel kind of sad for this since the singer (橋本千明) is an amateur, this might be a side effect of the eroge not being very good, but it seems she also released her first single at M3:

II'm new to this so please be nice. I'm not sure if I should ask here but...

I'm not good at Japanese so I still can't grasp the denpa concept very well. I used to think they are just cute songs but listening to it and looking at omaera it seems that's not it. What are the implications of denpa songs? What's denpa-kei in general? And is it a well known concept in the otaku world, or in Japan in general?

I've also seen the concept in VNs before but according to VNDB it's
>a subgenre of horror eroge, popularised by the 1996 Leaf game 'Shizuku' which also lent the genre its name. The typical model is a horror story where the catalyst for the events that occur are based on familiar people acting in unfamiliar, yet seemingly orchestrated ways. Stories where the world seems to have gone mad; and the protagonist is not necessarily an exception. The name comes from the idea that electromagnetic waves (denpa) is causing people to act strangely (although it is rarely anything that mundane)."

Is it completely unrelated?
Sorry if it's a dumb question.

>> No.11613796

>>11613655
>What's denpa-kei in general?
There's a nice analysis above in OP, but I've been meaning to write something about denpa for a while now.

Anyway, "denpa" is a concept that developed in parallel/out of otaku culture (today it's inextricable). The only western parallel that I can think of is "tin-foil-hat crazy." It focuses on themes of insanity, excess, and a dissolving of forms and meaning as a result of media hypersaturation and recycled signs (thus why it's also so closely tied to moe). You can tie to a number of things: otaku subculture, Japanese culture as a whole (collectivism, westernization, technological advancement), or the postmodern condition at large.

"Denpa-kei" is a style or aesthetic that focuses on these themes. So we see things such as fragmentation, isolation, hyperreality, ubiquitous technology, and dualities of meaning. As we have advanced as a species, we have lost something little by little, and I think this is what denpa seeks to touch upon (with a cute smile no doubt).

>What are the implications of denpa songs?
Not sure what you mean. Denpa songs essentially tell us that the world is now an incomprehensible mess, but do try to enjoy it.

The dualities explored question the nature of "reality." For example, while a song might sound cute, the lyrics may often be heavily erotic or disturbing in nature. So it reflects something of the culture it comes from, but more importantly, it alludes to the dissolving connection between the image and meaning. We live in a world in which we are surrounded by images, but very little meaning and so we endlessly construct it and assign it. But it's futile in the end, isn't it? Denpa, like moe, is ironic and duplicitous in nature. It is a celebration of both the meaningful and the meaningless, wrapped up in a cute, contradictory image.

Think of denpa and moe as a mirror reflecting itself.

>And is it a well known concept in the otaku world, or in Japan in general?
Only in Japan, really.

>> No.11613821

>>11613796 Cont.
>>11613655
>Is it completely unrelated?
It's completely related. "Denpa" alludes to a murder committed purportedly under the influence of electromagnetic waves. A lot of denpa is dark and "brainwashy" sounding.

>Only in Japan, really.
Also, sorry. I didn't read your question well enough.

I think Japan is familiar with "denpa", though not to the extent that otaku are. As far as I know, Japan as a whole probably views them all as crazy losers. It's only within the otaku subculture that people will understand the little signs that suggest "denpa," much like moe. Japan might recognize it, but likely won't know what it means.

I hope that isn't too confusing. Just think of it as a style that is all about craziness resulting from electromagnetic waves: shit like space-alien mind control and conspiracies transmitted through television static.

I hope, though, that my confusing posts have at least stretched beyond denpa as simply aesthetic. It's more a manifestation of a global condition of humanity.

>> No.11614106

>I used to think they are just cute songs
I don't really have much to add after the previous poster, but while a lot of denpa songs are cute, not all cute songs are denpa, and not all denpa songs are cute either.

Don't think, feel.

>>11613796
That moe comparison is pretty good: no one really knows what either of them mean and both of them can be used to label a whole bunch of wildly different things just because they have a certain "feel" to them.

Or maybe that's just me misunderstanding both denpa and moe.

>> No.11614156

>>11614106
>That moe comparison is pretty good
Thanks. However, even in it's practical usage (e.g. "a moe character") it is contradictory in nature.

Moe typically stems from a character's propriety/lack of self-awareness that she is a sexual being, which in turn emphasizes her as a sexual being. We typically won't find a "slut character" moe, but we find weak, "virginal" ones moe as fuck. Likewise, older characters are often not moe (excepting cases of parody) because growing age implies sexuality.

Anyway, onto the real point. As moe grew with otaku culture and otaku constructed more and more "moe signs" (e.g. imouto, twintails, maids, randoseru, kneesocks) these symbols eventually came to hold their own bits of meaning. For example: twintails + flat chest + zettai ryouiki = tsundere.

Eventually, these signs become recycled to the point of contradiction and the moe image becomes moe in itself (think about how involuted "tsundere" actually is). We now feel moe toward an image not because it necessarily evokes natural emotion, but because it adheres to an artificial language of signs that we've learned to communicate with. I haven't read it all yet, but I think this is what Azuma refers to as "database consumption."

Denpa ties directly into this by mashing symbols into a discordant mess: cute but disturbing, bleeding excess, full of otaku symbols and self reference. Denpa is "accelerated moe" (or rather emphasizes its current form). Artists like Poyoyon Rock put together contradictory elements into their pictures (e.g. sukumizu + thigh-high + glasses + band-aid on socks) and it turns out REALLY moe, but it's different from the moe of yesterday. It's more esoteric and ambiguous.

It brings to question if this vapor of symbols actually means anything and whether or not it's any different from real life. Today, people dress up as fictional characters, perpetuating realities based upon fiction. And I don't mean Akiba. Life itself is no longer real. That's denpa.

I know there is recommendations in OP's post, but there's too much for me

You could try the YouTube links on that page?

If I had to pick one album from one artist for someone new to the genre, I'd say MOSAIC.WAV's AKIBA-POP√RECOLLECTION.

Thank you very much, it's very helpful. Sounds like a fetishist way to poke fun at ourselves. It also makes sense that it's mostly a Japanese thing since Japanese media (especially otaku media) is increasingly oversaturated with a very high noise ratio, so it might hit them closer to home.

So, does a denpa song incorporate a dissonant mixture of overexaggerated symbols as a form of self-criticism of those symbols? In that case, being a fan of denpa music becomes a special thing, kind of in a fetishist way.

The duality part especially catches my attention, indeed many songs sound like they're intentionally trying to push it all the way to the point of being disturbing.

How many artists are familiar with this self-referencing issue by the way? Are denpa songs songs that "accidentally" came out this way, or do the artists actively pursue this outcome?

Most people get instantly drawn away from denpa songs which might be, in a way, the point. So what about fans? What are they looking for in denpa music?

And does this concept exist outside of the otaku scope?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm finding this pretty interesting. It's been a while since I've read such a detailed insight of something actually related to otaku culture in /jp/. Thank you.

>does a denpa song incorporate a dissonant mixture of overexaggerated symbols as a form of self-criticism of those symbols?
Not so much criticism as celebration and reflection. Despite it's cynicism, it's doesn't judge the phenomenon as something necessarily bad--instead it acknowledges it as an inextricable aspect of the contemporary otaku and serves as a mode of communication.

>How many artists are familiar with this self-referencing issue by the way?
Practically all of them. It's very self-aware, much like anime.

This is one of the contradictions of moe. While moe depends on character unawareness, the show is keenly aware of the process and so is the viewer. It plays like a dialogue. Something like Tsukiyomi: Moon Phase is a good example of both moe and denpa. By constantly breaking our suspension of disbelief, yet remaining powerfully moe, it brings the "dialogue" and the "floating symbols" to our attention. Stripped of any naturalism in execution or form, it means to say: "this is what it means to be otaku." We are animals struggling to communicate and make sense in wholly artificial worlds.

Denpa music behaves the same way. MOSAIC.WAV's songs include tsundere, childhood friends, maids, oneesan types, and so on. All we really hear is a little "voice snippet" but we "know" the character from this alone.

Anyway, I think the most powerful theme of denpa is "dissolving." As a result of postmodern excess, we have more and more information and less and less meaning. Moreover, the individual is now inseparable from the products of consumption. Everything in otaku culture boils down to patterns of consumption as a way to "speak" to others (what shows we watch, what games we play, what we buy). At the same time, the internet has made communication ubiquitous, yet shallow and transient. And while denpa says something about otaku, it also says something about the world we currently live in because all developed nations share these characteristics.

>So what about fans? What are they looking for in denpa music?
Other than the "fun" aspect of the music, I think fans get a sense of belonging. Every time we catch a reference we recognize it feels good, like you're part of something larger. The irony is that this same system also isolates and alienates by reducing communication to a system of consumption of arbitrary signs. We will only feel like we belong if we continue to consume. Further, otaku culture by its nature pushes the otaku away from "normal" society.

There was a song (I forgot the name) where a girl sacrifices her cat in a ritual to make friends. IIRC, the narrator "becomes" her friend in the end. The major irony here is that the narrator IS the girl, becoming friends with his own creation (in a knowingly delusional way). At the same time his creation of such a song is an attempt to communicate with others like him; unfortunately, this mode of communication inevitably pushes others away. What's the point of the song? I'm not sure. We all need friends, I guess. When we take part in the denpa celebration, it feels like we are amongst friends.

>And does this concept exist outside of the otaku scope?
"Denpa" is particularly Japanese, but the aspects it explores are common to developed, "postmodern" societies.

In short, it means that consumerism evolved to a point where we define ourselves and our interactions around objects with unstable meaning (status symbols). Over time, the symbols no longer represent concrete, functional, or "real" characteristics (e.g. Levi's = "America"), but we appropriate/consume them nonetheless. What results is "hyperreality"--fiction made real.

This is partly what denpa reflects. It's why artists adopt character personas. It emphasizes the blurring of fiction and reality. Akiba represents the "Akiba" in anime/manga and vice versa. It's neither real nor unreal. It's hyperreal.

I hope I'm not rambling too much.

One final point. If you're interested in the matter further, check these out:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postmodernity#Descriptions
http://www.acrwebsite.org/search/view-conference-proceedings.aspx?Id=7141

I also recommend works by Jean Baudrillard.

The things that stand out to me include:

Hyperreality (unreal things replacing the real): maid cafes, cosplay, moe anthropomorphization, Eva everything. There was that one small city that adopted a fictional summer festival from a recent anime. That shit is crazy.

Paradoxical juxtaposition of opposites (contradictions--e.g., moe, tsundere, fetishization of loli).

Fragmentation: Transient online communication, self-reference, pastiche, moe symbols, excess.

Decentering of the subject: Projection of otaku into otaku media so that the media itself becomes the center of focus. Think about where "viewer" sits in a moe show and how the show incorporates us into its narrative by simultaneously catering to us and distancing us.

Again, sorry for rambling. I've had this on my mind for ages. I personally think it's fascinating, especially in how closely it ties into the themes explored in denpa and otaku media as a whole.

So denpa and Superflat have a lot in common?

>> No.11618612

>>11617678
Superflat is much more organized and explicit in its aims/criticism but yes, they are both exploring the similar ideas. The point they both have in common is "otaku culture" which can be extended (in the case of Superflat) to "post-WWII Japan." Because of its focus on the war and the art culture, I feel it's its own discourse.

Superflat, while an interesting social critique of modern Japan, is bogged down by its own marketing and association with "high art." Despite Murakami's point, people still consume his art as "art" and he still creates and charges for it as such. We mustn't forget that it's a "brand" first and foremost. That said, it has much more cultural significance than its colleague, "Cool Japan" which by all means is offensive in its blatant misappropriation.

Does anyone else think there are a lot of similarities between denpa and bubblegum dance music? In bubblegum dance high-pitched vocals are the standard and there are lots of silly songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8jeM61xf0M)), songs that don't make any sense (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PHODLXpIKU)), songs that are deceptively lewd (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyhrYis509A)) and/or dark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omc_UaBAWK8)) despite sounding innocently cheerful and upbeat, and songs with futuristic themes about things like outer space and the internet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHf2fPQTroI).). Except of course that denpa is a for a very niche and specific audience its musical trends reflect that, and bubblegum dance had a brief moment of worldwide popularity and has a much more mainstream sound.

For no reason at all, probably. Different genre entirely but there is also lots of Japanese text for no reason in the music video for Anamanaguhi's Meow. I think it's just there to look "cool."
