I know you guys really like synth, but does anybody want to make an instrumental track? I'm a year into the Violin, which realistically is almost nothing, but I want to contribute! I know there's plenty of aspiring keyboard players out there, so maybe we can work something out! The recording quality doesn't have to be excellent (though if you're feeling picky about it, then I can't help that) since it's just for fun, and I'm okay with doing a backdrop, first or second voices.

All I really need is sheet music, though if you want to make an arrange, we could probably work something out from an MP3 or music video. I'm excited, let's work together and make something beautiful!

You get way to many responses, I'm sad at /jp/ but I may as well drop in now as well.

This is a /jp/ Project thread. It's there for the userbase of /jp/ to get to gether to work and discuss projects. It's not a "make a game with strangers in a short amount of time" thread.
And as friendly reminder: we're doing unpaid projects on an annonymous imageboard that isn't known for it's working ethnics. Also add to that the condition that a game needs more than one skill to get done. It's relative easy to get people with common skills and interest together for a project but people that have no idea about the work, skills and difficulties of the other project members in this anonymous enviroment without the typical management that dedicated studios have is quite much. Everything that gets worked on is quite an achievement in itself.

You will probably never get the joy of a silly forever-project.

Also re-read the post you quoted and the ones it responds to. It's about doing an artbook which is arguably better done in the OC-thread for the exact reason you stated (althrough I agree with >>11487210, it's not 100% drawfags and an artbook as a community project may be better discussed here as OC threads are more solo-oriented).

If you want to shitpost so badly and have your games please go to the agdg in >>>/vg/. I'm sure you will be in good company.

Who am I kidding. I'm actually quite enjoying your continuous efforts. Besides these threads would probably die before the bumplimit is reached without you.

>>11487513
>I think you don't have any right to complain when you aren't doing anything yourself.
While I think that the one you replied to is a shitposter, I do feel bothered by this statement. Complaining is a form of critique and that shouldn't be limited to contributors. But in this case the complain in itself is rather dull, to me it sounds like "Why're you having fun if it doesn't entertain ME!?".

I don't really know the difference, sorry. I think I'm just being judgemental for the hell of it. Well, I listened to some tracks from the first /jp/ album, though I don't actually listen to synth that much, but how should I put it? It was like listening to a real singer compared to a vocaloid voice bank: you can make the vocaloid sound incredble, almost real, but there's always that little something that reminds you that it's a vocaloid.

Mind you, I'm not saying real singers are better than voice banks or vice-versa, I actually like vocaloid songs more than real vocals. What I'm trying to get across, I think, is that the first album has enough synth in it, and we could be trying something different. I'm still okay with synth, but I want to do instrumental more, because that could be interesting and fun!

I think the problem is that stupid and worthless people are put on the same level as skilled and intelligent people by everyone using anonymous posting. So you get these kinds of stupid responses like >>11487711, made on behalf of /jp/ as a whole that only represent the fictional imagination/fantasies of one asshole that doesn't contribute anything but only pats everyone on the back for no good reason.

It wouldn't be so bad if the posts weren't so passive aggressive in telling people to get in line or get lost. I mean, those are sometimes people that could actually make real contributions and not just circle jerking.

You're not doing any unpaid work. You're not doing anything at all. The only reason you don't use OC threads at this point is because you feel you carved out your own little kingdom and in fact you don't want to share with other people like those in the OC threads. It's just plain and simple ego tripping and riding on the coattails of the few people that actually do stuff. Only one (Marisa platformer) of which is an actual collaboration between only 2 people from what I can tell. The music compilation is only as collaborative as the Society for OC Archiving.

So keep up the good work in telling people to go to other boards and other threads if they're actually capable of making anything.

The current OP lacks any information about the Marisa platformer, the other active /jp/ project.

Additionally, it has no information about the second music project. The deadline, the dropbox, how to get added, etc.

Further, it is blatantly inviting trolling by violating one of /jp/'s most fundamental rules of '/a/ speak'.

We've already had enough trolling as is, and this thread only asks for more without providing the substance to encourage actual project work. That is why we care.

The biggest problem I have with that is that it feels like I'm just doing my personal project on my own, rather than a collaboration, and that was never what I wanted to do.

In any case, my plan for now is to release a "finished" playable version pretty soon (once all animations are done, plus a few other things). It won't have very much content, unfortunately, but I'll work with what we have so far and try to squeeze the most out of it. And then later on, if there's any interest at all, I'll keep updating it with more stuff over time. Well, me or anyone else, as I'll be keeping it open source.

Isn't that to be expected? From experience, I have found that the best way of receiving help is to make a strong initiative and to form strong bonds with those who are actually helpful. It's easier for people to participate if there is strong leadership and something to build from. That gives the project a direction instead of having endless arguments about things that aren't important.

This, my friend, is currently the idiocy of the /jp/ project threads. I find it funny that everyone wants to play a /jp/ game and yet no one gives a single contribution.
Though I guess your main concern is about arts and animations, and I don't see people helping with that unless you hire or pay them.

Is this a game you're going to add to the /jp/ Project too anon?

I recently managed to get some 3D workable models of Remilia but I wonder what kind of game I should make with that.

The deadline should have passed by now, or will soon pass.

And on that note, I think we should close the applications for the dropbox. We have gathered (to my surprise) again a large number of submissions - similar, if not equal to, the number of submissions we got last time.

Unfortunately, the organizer still hasn't posted back in this thread, but I hope he's at least browsing from time-to-time. He seems to still be accepting the dropbox requests, thankfully.

Anyway, now that the deadline has more or less passed, we should again think about the format of the compilation.

We have 10 people submitting, and all but one have at least 2. In this case, we have at least 19 tracks if we follow last project's format of selecting up to 2 tracks per person. The question now is, will we do another 2 cd release - or not?

The problem this time is, so far, we only have one person interested in making an album cover, and I'm afraid that the workload would be too large if we made him do 2 cd covers. Honestly, there's no problem, or difference - in fact - if we just pack it all in 1 big cd to make ends meet.

The best scenario is, however unlikely, that another artist becomes willing to make an album art, or the person we have right now would be willing to do two.

Not really :
The first compilation has 28 tracks for 1:49 duration.
The second project has 20 tracks for 1:19 duration.
I suggest we keep the applications open for now, there's no reason fo a deadline since we still don't have a cover art.

>if we follow last project's format of selecting up to 2 tracks per person
Wrong, the first project has up to 3 tracks per person.
People had submitted 1 to 6 tracks. The number 3 was decided because a good number of artists submitted 3 or more tracks and because is permitted to create two cd with the same number of tracks.

For the second project it looks like people limited themselves to 2 tracks (except J0hn). Artists should submit the number of tracks they want, I think it's too early to decide on a number of tracks per artist to include in the release.

>> No.11530197

I'd like to know if there are still people who want to submit their music or not.

As you said there's a lot of electro oriented music this time and for now we won't be able to make a organic cd and an electro cd, but, we can think of other theme to organise the cd if we want to go for a double release.
We have sufficient tracks to do a double release but we'll need two cover arts for that and we still have none. For now I think we should go for a single release.

>Vandrao,
the panning of your tracks seems strangely done to me, you've got a lot of high end on the right with more low end on the right. Usually you'll want to have a balenced mix with all the frequencies spread on the stereo space, if certain frequencies are placed on an narrow stereo space it's not very pleasant to listen. I know that it's nice to have an instrument like the piano with a panning that emulates the real instrument, but in this case you should balance the stereo space with the other instruments.
I suggest you review your panning, it should not be difficult to do somthing really good since there's not a lot of instruments.

Normally you want to let your sound peak to maximum level so they have a lot of dynamics but without going above 0dBa. In this track it sounds like you've limited (or compressed really hard) a lot of your instruments while some of your percussions are able to reach 0dBa.
Check the spectrogram, you should see that the signal doesn't go all the way up but instead draws a sort of line were the compression/limitation occurs.
Because of that your instrument lose a lot of dynamic and it feels like they block each other.
I suggest you redo your mix.
>Wandering East of the Horizon
The end is to abrupt, you should let the instruments fade of until it's silent.

I'd love to fix it, but I wish I had an idea about what you just said. You were correct to say that I did compress several instruments. Do you mean to say I should take it out? In any case, I'll try it out.

>Wandering East of the Horizon
The track was meant to loop into itself. I don't mind fading it out for this release, but... the end would sound awkward then.

>> No.11530496

>>11530468
You should adjust the volume of the instruments without any compression/limitation and without minding the clip at first. Then you should adjust the master volume so that you have "some" clip at the loudest parts of the song, at this point, everything should be pretty low in volume. Now you start to add compression. The purpose of compression is to raise percieved volume while not reaching 0dBa (clip). If you need to compress a lot to reach desired volume, then it means there a problem with the earlier steps of mixing (filter/EQ/pan and a lot of stuff). I won't explain all that stuff here, I suggest you read some guides online on mixing it will only help you.

>Wandering East of the Horizon
If you could arrenge the end of this song for the release it would be nice.

>> No.11530505

>>11530468
I think what he's trying to say is you overcompressed some of your instruments as well as the master mix.

If you run it through a spectogram, you'll see the resulting spectrum looks really bad/weird. Unless it was a conscious effort, you usually don't want extreme clipping like that.

Well, it seems we have the music group here, although the confusion about the project is exactly what I was highlighting earlier....

>>11529955
>limited themselves to 2 tracks
The idea is that each artist can upload as many songs as they'd like to the dropbox, and then choose which two they'd like to submit.

Two in particular so we didn't have to worry about choosing how many songs each artist contributed. Considering submissions can be used in later releases (with artist's consent) I don't see a compelling reason to change the limit.

>>11530197
>>11530346
No 'new' submissions will be accepted for this album so we don't get stuck in deadline/editing limbo, but they can easily be added to the next one.

That said, I'm expecting the actual release to be the end of the month, which should give us ample time to get anything sorted out that we need to and allow the artists to make whatever tweaks they see fit.

>>11530202
I appreciate that you've taken the time to listen through everything and give feedback, it looks like it's helping several of the artists improve their processes. (If anyone knows how to make Miku intelligible, please, let me know).
>too repetitive and too long
We're not looking to exclude any songs based on style or personal preference. The /jp/ album is meant to be open to whatever the /jp/sies want to make. There will be a cursory quality check (for example, we're not releasing someone fapping into a microphone for x minutes), but nothing beyond that.

It would be great to see 'themed' projects crop up alongside the general one, where the submitters could be more restrictive about the types of songs they produce, but the general one won't impose those types of restrictions.

As for the particular track in question, that is the style (similar to Faced). It's meant to be music one listens to in the background, as they focus on other things. No music is universally enjoyed, but it is still an accepted submission.

>> No.11532460

So, now that the deadline has passed, each artist should do any post-processing they feel they need as we prepare for the release.

Since we're doing a single release it's being very long so I decided to divide the album in 3 parts, electro, organic and then calm jazzy music.
First part starts with Wriggle to give some energy and ends with Transient Steps wich has a slow tempo.
Second part starts with Beautiful Lie wich seems to be a good intro and ends with Enveloping Mist wich is nice and calm.
Third part starts with Yandeiru Seishun to change the mood after Enveloping Mist and ends with A day in the life of NEET to end on a calm and simple instrumental note.
And then there's Brush Street VIII wich is "meant to have, uhh, a kind of hypnotic feel to it, right?", so I guess you'd better get hypnotized at the end of the album.

Indeed. I purposed the 'pick two' as a way to preempt a non-ending discussion (and deadline limbo) like what happened with the title. This isn't to say we can't discuss the songs.

> You mean "I" no ?
I do mean 'we'. I am not the person who organized the last album, and I don't anticipate being the one who organizes the next. Which is why we want to establish was the /jp/ music project functions to the community. In the last project we were fairly adamant about the 'open to all (reasonable) submissions' point, which is why I was reiterating it here.

I went through and listened to the submissions as part of the cursory quality control (additional checks are welcome).

I do like the beat and feel of this song, but at 0:52 and 0:56, the background voice appears to have changed to 'penis' instead of 'Hiya!' (or perhaps a shortened 'peni'). If this is the case, the author should re-upload a modified version of the song so we avoid the appearance of trolling and keep to the SFW theme of the blue boards.

This is not to say that we can't have a NSFW album release, just that it should not be the general project.

Beyond that I like the order proposed.

After a long delay it's finally time for a new build~

(Source here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4eqgb5j497jut1b/marisa008source.rar))

This version is pretty much "finished", meaning it's playable, with proper HP/lives tracking, level completion, timer, etc. Not all the stuff planned is in, for example, you only have one attack, there's only one character, only a few types of enemies, some key animations are missing, etc. If there's any interest, I will (slowly) keep adding more stuff over time, but I'd also like to keep this open for others to contribute. Several people have expressed the interest to contribute previously, so hopefully that can actually happen. Unfortunately, I can't really tell you specifically what's needed, because I don't know that myself, I can only say that the game needs more stuff in general. Check this post >>11391908 for an example of a perfect "content" contribution (four out of five enemies/obstacles currently in the game are from that post. If several other people made contributions like that, the game would quickly grow several times larger).

In addition, there's also some polish required before it can really be considered finished. Specifically:
- character animations (jumping, getting hurt, shooting, maybe crouching)
- sound effects (jumping, landing, shooting, bullet impact, picking up mushrooms, activating checkpoint)
- music (no specific requirements here)
and also, a name. I can't come up with anything more creative than "Marisa Platformer".

Anyway, regardless of further contributions, the game is very much playable right now, so go and make some cool maps and share them here. I recommend you play the Tutorial in game mode first, then open it in the editor mode to see how it works.

Just because it's called the "/jp/" album doesn't mean it needs to be all by /jp/. It just means /jp/ is organizing it, who cares if other people want to join in? The most the merrier, it's just a name. Plus let's face it, everyone here goes to other boards. No one here is really from /jp/, it's just a board you come to every once in a while to shitpost. Hell I even browse reddit regularly, probably more than 4chan, but my song was still accepted. It doesn't make my music any less good or worthy of making it on to the album

Why are people so retarded about copyright? Touhou is copyrighted, just like anything made since Mickey Mouse that hasn't specifically been released from copyright (by dedicating it to the public domain).

ZUN just ALLOWS fans to make games. He very much owns the copyright, and uses it to occasionally poke people who try to commercialize Touhou too much to keep the whole thing doujin.

It seems some people get the wrong idea since they see him allowing so much work they think the copyright simply doesn't exist.

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't there.

He can very well pull down everything if he wanted to, and it would all be well within his rights. Not that he would, but he very much can.

You actually can, because you own it. Should The Winstons say "hey Drum and Bass big names, better start paying for all those Amen break sampling you did", they're gonna get paid even if they just let anyone use it for free until now because no one signed any permission contracts.

Same goes for 2hu. ZUN wakes up tomorrow and decides he wants to fuck everyone in the ear, doujin creators better hope he has a lotta lube.

The Amen Break is a bad example, as it would fall under fair use (using a tiny sample in a way that does not harm the original creators commercially).

>The Amen Break is a bad example, as it would fall under fair use (using a tiny sample in a way that does not harm the original creators commercially).
No, it doesn't fall under fair use. Even the tiniest sample is protected as long as it's identifiable. Anything that involves repackaging constitutes commercial harm when it comes to copyright law. "Fair use" is to recreate the Amen pattern with your own/royalty-free/cleared sounds, or in Touhou's case, your own set of characters and setting. Or do a parody that recognizes the copyright belonging to ZUN, and he'd still be able to get a share of any potential profits in this case if he had a good enough lawyer. Don't delude yourself, there are legal precedents.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mockbuster#The_Asylum_vs._Warner_Bros..2C_2012

>> No.11540410

>>11540340
Fair Use is specifically for things that ARE protected by copyright law. They designate exceptions to the normal protection provided by copyright; in certain cases, you are allowed to use copyrighted stuff even if under copyright law you would normally not be allowed to.

>17 U.S.C. § 107
>
>Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:
>
>1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
>2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
>3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
>4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
>
>The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

If you use a tiny sample that is not recognizably the 'core' of the track, and don't use it in a way that it becomes the 'core' of your track (for example, Eminem's 'Sing For the Moment' would infringe on Aerosmith's 'Dream On' if he hadn't gotten the rights), then it's fair use unless the court screws you over. (They can always sue even if they won't win the case.)

The problem is, the player spawns way above the actual map, and currently there's no way to change that. I'll try to add some way to change your starting position in a future release. For now, you have to press R in the editor to see where the spawn point is and build your map around that.
