I hear that this 40 year old song is getting lots of airtime in Japan right now.

>> No.11434928

Yeah, some commercial has been running it.

It's a really good song and a great record. Very bittersweet about youth and suicide. I was always surprised there aren't other Yuming fans in the 60s/70s/old Japan threads. This means the weebs have got to it now and I can't play her in the car anymore. Too bad..

tsk, looks like you already answered the question that I was about to ask...

"is this song about suicide"

There were tons of covers for that but it was a weird American song. Even Bossa Nova: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOORJJ4vptc

It would be nice if it revives those folky 60s ballads a little bit. I always wanted to track down the folk album she covered but it's hard, maybe they'll reissue it.

Just in case not everyone's quite on the same page, Yuming's "Contrails" (1973) in question was adapted as the theme of Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" (2013).

Incidentally, has anyone seen it yet?

BUT on the bright side.... these weebs will finally get to hear REAL music unlike what what's being churned out by vocaloid and autotune.

60s-70s seems to be an era when REAL MUSIC (think Karen Carpenter... etc) was crafted in pretty much the capitalist side of the world.

A lot of things but the song itself feels out of place alongside the rest of that era's pop. It seems like Miyazaki just drops random shit he likes into soundtracks and it ripples through the industry. It's scary how much Ghibli influences pop culture.

That goes for any music. I find the fake and sameness of 80s pop depressive. It is complete escapism, and why do they want to escape so much? That's all it brings to mind. Not sure why you would think hippy music is depressing, it's all about enjoying life. OP song in example paints suicide as beautiful, like those cliched cherry blossoms.

A month or so ago I read an article linked from /jp/ about how Reina (Morning Musume graduate) was working with a new group trying to make folk music popular again, but nobody liked it at all. Then again, it could be because after it's been "repackaged" into pop or rock or whatever it loses its classic appeal.

i watched the PV movie featuring the soundtrack on my iphone... i was like meh.

It's been on the rise for the past ten years in the with chamber pop and all that. Japan will probably drop some good stuff for us soon, they're usually a few years behind English music trends. I'm not sure if idol groups can be the ones to make it being in their closed off worlds, maybe some of those who left their groups to experience a harsher world could. Folk music is made by regular folk, you know?

>>11435021

Here's my initial impressions when I gave that track a serious monitoring treatment...

>「あの子は 昇っていく
>何もおそれない そして舞い上がる」
umm... so where is this going (cue in steely look on my face)

>「高いあの窓で あの子は死ぬ前も・・・」
uhhhh

>「空を見ていたの 今はわからない
>ほかの人には わからない・・・」
The highlight of the song for me, and her strongest line... kinda made me wince, grimace...

>「あまりにも 若すぎたと
>ただ思うだけ けれどしあわせ」
and realization of what the intent of this song sinks in for me.

The white road continues up the hill into the sky.
Wavering heat haze swept that child away,
Unrecognized, all alone, that child started to climb,
unafraid of anything, and flew away....

Longing for the sky, soaring into the sky,
That child's life became vapor trails.

Gazing at the sky out that high window,
"even now, they don't understand,"
other people couldn't understand,
only seeing a child who died too young,
... but even so, I was happy.
