In Japan, Touhou is considered something for hardcore otaku into Comiket and doujin stuff like that. The average middle-aged businessman on the train most likely doesn't know or care about Touhou. Hell, I have a Japanese otaku friend on twitter with mainstream tastes (they LOVE shounen series like Yugioh and Saint Seiya) and they thought Touhou was a bishoujo game series, not a bullet hell shooter.

In the other parts of the world, Touhou has nowhere near as much popularity as Vocaloid or Naruto. It is somewhat obscure. Yes, the ones at the cons are usually normalfags but some of them are unkept sperglords that hate socializing outside of their clique (but not in the /jp/ shut-in kind of way). Fuck them, they're annoying and passive aggressive as hell.

When I used to have a job, I interacted with hundreds of ``diverse'' people in different shops in several locations around the country. Whenever we had cigarette breaks, lunch, or whatever freetime was when people would talk about their interests.

Guess what they were?
Sports, cars, women, facebook, popular TV shows, drinking, video games, etc
If anyone talked about nerd stuff it was usually star wars or whatever comic book movie was popular. Once in a while they would talk about DBZ and pokemon, that was it as far as anime.

Halo, Breaking Bad, and the NFL are mainstream things that if you were to ask a hundred random people about, more than half would be interested in, if not at least hearing about them.

How many people out of a hundred are likely to know what touhou is?
