The point is that the anime club IS filled with average people. So it's fine. But maybe I'm just disillusioned because I never go outside otherwise.

There is however another club that isn't in the university and is just a public meetup thing sometimes and that place has a much better atmosphere and it feels like people legitimately like the culture more. But still. Generally speaking, they have a "normal" image and dont' talk about anything un-normal most of the time. Or maybe I'm just used to really unconventional conversation so it seems like they are talking normally.

Whatever

I agree, definitely not "accepted".
Basically, unless you watch Naruto or Bleach, you're a weirdo to society,
There are a lot of us, but we're not really "mainstream".
Only on the internet is anime mainstream, as with Touhou,

>Touhou is mainstream!
In Japan, Touhou is considered something for hardcore otaku into Comiket and doujin stuff like that. The average middle-aged businessman on the train most likely doesn't know or care about Touhou. Hell, I have a Japanese otaku friend on twitter with mainstream tastes (they LOVE shounen series like Yugioh and Saint Seiya) and they thought Touhou was a bishoujo game series, not a bullet hell shooter.

In the other parts of the world, Touhou has nowhere near as much popularity as Vocaloid or Naruto. It is somewhat obscure. Yes, the ones at the cons are usually normalfags but some of them are unkept sperglords that hate socializing outside of their clique (but not in the /jp/ shut-in kind of way). Fuck them, they're annoying and passive aggressive as hell.

>These people literally wanting /jp/ to turn into a ridiculous clique like wizardchan

Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with wanting a close-knit community but it only works according to ... certain standards, like yeah redditshits and 9fags aren't welcome here but fuck man you're going to outcast sexhavers too? I hate normals but shy sexhavers are lewd and experienced while basement permavirgins are....not as fun to be around. And I wouldn't want a community run by them. Too loser for my tastes, sorry, but I don't associate with losers.

Basically I'm cool with /jp/ how it is now as long as I can flirt with hot shy /jp/sies over irc and steam so they can give me nudes.

If someone starts acting like a contrarian and says shit like 'people who have sex are normals' just defend your position with the opinion of the rest of the world, maybe add in the zinger about "if most of the world wouldn't jump off a cliff, would you?" >Is Touhou mainstream now?
Secondary Touhou culture certainly is. I can't believe how many people I see who co-opt Touhou shit and it's painfully obvious that they haven't played the games at all. In fact, I'm convinced that cosplayers are either just trying to cash in on "obscurity" points or awkward, crossdressing guys who actually do care about it.

I don't think many people actually play the games. They're not that good, to be honest. Respect to primaries, though.

>shes playing beer pong with this guy.
>be pretty drunk
>he made a bet that if my girlfriend lost against him she would have to play the next round naked
>she loses, because she is bad and ends up literally taking off her clothes for everyone to see.
>the the guy, presumably to try his luck, bet her that if she lost again she would have to suck his dick.
>girlfriend turns to me then and says "Anon, I know I can win this time! What do you say?"
>thought she was joking, so I just casually replied "Yea, whatever."
>she loses again, and this asshole says something like "Hey, a bet's a bet." and my girlfriend responds with some bullshit like "Well I am a woman of my word.".
>Within the space of fifteen seconds she's then literally on her knees, naked, sucking this guys dick. There was nothing I could do about it.
>Because of that I just turned away and pretended to see nothing / try to not look like some beta faggot. Then after a couple of minutes I hear him saying "Go, show him. Let him see"
>girlfriend taps me on the shoulder, opens her mouth full of his cum, then closes it again and swallows in front of me

Just because someone doesn't invest their time in playing the source material DOES NOT mean they aren't a fan. In fact, taking the effort to make a cosplay outfit and wear it in public is an even greater displayment of one's nerdiness. That's ridiculous. It's like me saying I'm a fan of a band because I wear a shirt but have never listened to their music. The source material is the SOURCE of the fan culture.

Your comment on cosplay would have merit if cosplaying were actually a measure of involvement in a particular fan culture. All it suggests is involvement in COSPLAY culture (i.e. they are cosplay fans). Many people cosplay from works they have not seen. If you think this makes them fans of the series, games, etc. you are wrong.

I do, however, have a problem with people spending top-dollar for band shirts while not knowing what the band is. Likewise, I have a problem with "fans" who are only fans insofar as it involves cheap memes and "nerd cred." It's like name-dropping. It's disingenuous.

I don't find anything wrong with being a fan of something that you haven't invested much time in, especially when the means to do it are hard in the first place; Re: being a fan of Doraemon even though you've probably only watched like 2-3 episodes, maybe a movie at best. >> No.11437589

If you are referring to the american populace, then no I don't think touhou is mainstream at all.

When I used to have a job, I interacted with hundreds of ``diverse'' people in different shops in several locations around the country. Whenever we had cigarette breaks, lunch, or whatever freetime was when people would talk about their interests.

Guess what they were?
Sports, cars, women, facebook, popular TV shows, drinking, video games, etc
If anyone talked about nerd stuff it was usually star wars or whatever comic book movie was popular. Once in a while they would talk about DBZ and pokemon, that was it as far as anime.

Halo, Breaking Bad, and the NFL are mainstream things that if you were to ask a hundred random people about, more than half would be interested in, if not at least hearing about them.

How many people out of a hundred are likely to know what touhou is?
