I've tried reading Perfect Memento and the other fanbooks. I enjoyed it and thought it was very interesting. I can recognize many characters now. But I STILL don't care about them.

The characters are genuinely interesting, but I just don't care enough about them to actually read any of the mangas.

I get that this is the appeal of the series. As some anon said: "The characters are templates with a personality and motive that can be summed up in one line of a text file."

But that's not enough for me. I want to be properly introduced to the characters before I can give a shit about any of them. All the Touhou stories I've tried to read feature dozens of characters that I'm supposed to care about and reference past events.

I just don't know where to start. I can't really start from anywhere since I'm not interested enough. Maybe Touhou just isn't for me.

No different than Touhou. You don't need to play the shmups to learn their personality/interactions, because none of that shit takes place there. All of that spins off from doujins and fan works.

There is literally zero reason you could not pick up a Touhou video game that is not a shmup and have fun unless you just hate video games. Which is fine.

I played Pac-man and Mario because I enjoyed the gameplay. With Touhou, I dislike the original games and don't find the others interesting. A fighting game? It can't be THAT good. An RPG? There are probably better ones out there. The Touhou characters are the main appeal, but I don't know enough about them to actually find it interesting.

I played Phantasmagoria of Flower View a while ago (I like phantasmagoria-type games better than the usual shmup). It was fun to play, I even read the dialogues. I eventually gave up on Komachi's scenario and stopped playing.
