Any tips on capturing "Umbrella Sign "Parasol Star Memories"? I've tried about 45 times across 2 shottypes and I've only managed to capture it once on Marisa B (strangely on my first attempt).

Practice makes perfect!

The safespot, I believe, is right in front of her as the bullets are spawning. You have to look out for her umbrellas though, and I've never actually done it so I'm not sure how it works. I think she has save spots for all of her swirly circle attacks, but I'm not entirely sure. I haven't played UFO enough to learn anything beyond the "so piss easy :VVVVVV wow you suck harder than DSP man" Hard mode. I've seen people use safe spots on a few of her attacks on Lunatic, so they're there. Just go watch some replays or something.

That spellcard is really easy with SanaeB and nearly impossible for everyone else, unless you use the safespot.
To use the safespot just stay really close to her and follow her around as she moves.
Although to have a chance to get close to her in the first place, you need to use the safespot on the nonspell before it, same deal keep close to her and follow her around.

MaZe is too good, truly the icycalm of our time. Except he actually knows his shit and plays for score to make mad nerds quit. He should play the original DDP and make that one loser shut-in fuckface who can't even chain 1-4 quit forever.

Do it, MaZe. Chain the first loop and destroy his hopes and dreams. Prove to that autist that he will never be good at the one game he loves, please. I'm actually surprised. MaZe had a time limit to get a WR in a month, and he really did it. Everyone that doubted him probably feels like a complete idiot now. MaZe acts like an asshole, but the fact that he can get an amazing score so easily completely justifies his attitude, unlike all of the other "good" Western players that are actually pretty bad yet still talk like they are good. MaZe truly is a prodigy; his self proclamation of "best in the West" is probably true. I am envious. Thank you thank you.
What can I say? Well for starters, I've been saying that I'm better than those wannabes for a while now. I'm not trying to gloat, believe me. I'm a firm believer in stating facts, and the fact is, I'm just flat out better than the vast majority of players in the west.
I've done much harder things in various other games than getting that WR.
Those fools act modest about their "achievements" until you actually tell them that they aren't all that impressive, then they end up flipping their shit and calling you out by saying things like "well if it's so easy then let me see you do". Seriously, you have no idea how many times I've heard the "let's see your wr" remark.
I've been planning to take a break from STG's, but I thought I'd do something that I feel is expected of me, which would be to do something unexpected...if that even makes sense.

I look forward to passing the flag onto one of my fellow UFO haters while I take a break from STG's. A young hopeful that sees that poorly designed sack of shit, easy game for what it really is.

When I return I'll give you a DDC hard/lunatic wr as well. I play that game better than most of the Japanese super players.

Agreed. A certain obnoxious someone I unfortunately have the burden of sharing an IRC channel with just can't stop calling himself and everything that he does shit, yet he acts like an elitist cunt by being an asshole to everyone new or worse than him. It's only escalated ever since he beat a "World Record" in a throwaway category on Easy mode from 5 or 6 years ago. With his long blogging/whining about everything he does, he's the walking definition of being two-faced and falsely humble, and there are more western players like that. Not only that, he only plays for score since all the actual good players do, and treats his achievements as nothing more than badges and excuses to use ":V" I honestly prefer players that are outright assholes like MaZe or gus, instead of the two-faced falsely modest players that so violently pollute what little is left of the western STG community.

These threads are getting more and more /vg/, thus becoming non-/jp/ in large amounts.

Back in the day people in these threads used to play the games and discuss about the gameplay, not only trashtalk others or the games for different purposes.

Times do change, and you're obviously allowed to keep the attitude of the STG threads like you want it to be, but they won't belong to /jp/ anymore if they keep being like this, so I'm suggesting moving to /vg/ for that.

Ok, yeah. SakuyaA seems rather good for this. Using the bomb for a 2.0 and then waiting it out for the 3/8 bomb pieces seems like a good idea during stage portions, but if you can milk out two 2.0's from a single bomb it would obviously be a lot better. (I don't see many places where this could be of use though)

The boss-slowdown thingy seems to make some patterns kind of funky (not necessarily hard), so I reacted in the wrong way with a few and had to bomb stuff in stages 1 and 3 a lot due to it.

Hey, made it to stage 4 post-midboss part. Kinda wanted to see what the boss for the A shots feels like since I never bothered to clear the game on anything but ReimuB and didn't really watch any A replays either. Maybe next time.

Have fun with this, anons. I'll lurk the thread to keep up with your progress.

Second, the point has never been to beat someone else. Scoring is much more about collaboration than competition to me. Nothing beats having brainstorming "conversations" with overseas players through replays because it's the only common "language" you speak."

Reposting the challenges from the previous thread:

Scoring challenge: DDC scoring on Normal/Hard
1. With MarisaB
2. The run must be done within the thread, no old scores.
3. Either screenshots or replays will be required.

Survival challenge: DDC no vertical on Normal/Hard/Lunatic
1. Survive as long as you can without using vertical movement.
2. Every shot-type is welcome
3. The run must be done within the thread, no old scores.
4. Either screenshots or replays will be required.
5. Whoever gets the farthest wins, tiebreaker will be the amount of lives left.

Do your best!

I'm a terrible person, but the 0 delay feels so good. I'll just have to deal with it for DDC. I give up. There's only so many runs I can do before I finally feel like I'm not improving at all and I think I've reached my limit for now.

Eight hours is pretty intense, man. What level are you playing at?
I see much more improvement in my game by playing short bursts throughout the day - maybe 3 hours per day, a few credits at a time.

Attempting to score in DOJBL and DDC Hard, low level player. I have an idea on what to do, but I don't have enough exposure to the later levels in either game because I restart so much. I started with DOJ, it was very enjoyable until I started making idiotic mistakes on easy stuff. Switched to DDC, didn't make it past Stage 3 once because I messed up and missed on Kagerou like a dipshit each time, insta ESC+R. Normally, I'd just use practice mode after getting so frustrated, but today I decided to just keep slapping in credits and rage restarting.

To be fair, I didn't really get much sleep last night so instead of taking a nap, I played STGs instead. It wasn't a very good idea to play STGs while sleep deprived, but it wasn't like there was much else to do. I think 3 hours was around the time that I started getting upset with the game and switched, I knew I should have just stopped there. I usually just play for two or so hours a day, but I needed to keep myself awake.

I'm a usually normal player, so maybe the same regime doesn't apply, and I shouldn't even continue giving you advice.
I've played a ton of DDC Hard credits though, and Kagerou was a showstopper every single time. For the record, I can usually reach at least stage 4 on any other 2hu, bar SA, without that much effort.
DDC is another beast, personally. There are a lot of attack types in that game that I just can't deal with, and Kagerou seems to embody them all. All she need's is star bullets and she'd be my official worst boss ever.

>> No.11389949

No, it's okay. I'm normally a Normal player, but I felt that if I was going to fail horribly at scoring, I'd might as well get some experience with Hard mode as well. I'm honestly happy I was able to NMNB Stage 1 and 2 consistently, it made me feel somewhat better, regardless of how trivial they might be. I should just try to 1cc and unlock everything in stage practice, but those early game deaths man, they hurt so much.

I don't start dying until Stage 4 on Normal, but I never really make it past Stage 3 because I'm always resetting because of a scoring mistake anyway, so it's pretty much the same deal for both Normal and Hard. I want to get better so I can spend more time with Kagerou and the other bosses, Wackysacky and Sexybanki have gotten far too much love from me.

The knives aren't aimed, you can't lead them.
It's a ticky pattern but it's still static though.
Try moving up and down, not just left, right.
Also, when watching a replay ignore the player's hitbox and pay attention to how the knives overlap and cross each other.

My block was that I didn't realize you should speedkill the first one so that you get two tanks of delay before slowly going over to not speedkill the second.. that means when the tank bursts with laser you chain right onto that flowers producer thing.

Anyways, >>11388129, please listen to me. That it's really related to this thread.
I went to #kusoplay a while ago; you know, #kusoplay?
Well anyways there was an insane number of people there, and I couldn't get in.
Then, I looked at the channel topic, and it had "tips on quickly 1ccing" written on it.
Oh, the stupidity. Those idiots.
You, don't come to IRC just to get a 1cc, fool.
It's only a 1cc, a ONE CREDIT CLEAR for crying out loud.
There're even entire families here. Family of 4, all out for some shmups, huh? How fucking nice.
"Alright, daddy's gonna try the Extra." God I can't bear to watch.
You people, I'll give you a 1cc if you get out of those seats.
IRC should be a bloody place.
That tense atmosphere, where two guys can start a PoFV match at any time,
the scoring mentality, that's what's great about this place.
Women and children should screw off and stay home.
Anyways, I was about to start streaming, and then the bastard beside me goes "want to see a pacifist run?"
Who in the world plays pacifist nowadays, you moron?
I want to ask him, "do you REALLY want to play the whole game without shooting?"
I want to interrogate him. I want to interrogate him for roughly an hour.
Are you sure you don't just want to try saying "pacifist run"?
Coming from a /jp/ veteran such as myself, the latest trend among us vets is this, lunatic no bomb.
That's right, lunatic no bomb. This is the vet's way of playing.
Lunatic no bomb means you give every spell card all you've got. But on the other hand the difficulty is a tad higher. This is the key.
And then when you clear, it's delicious. This is unbeatable.
However, if you attempt this then there is danger that you'll be marked by the score-runners as a survivalfag from next time on; it's a double-edged sword.
I can't recommend it to amateurs.
What this all really means, though, is that you, >>11388129, should just stick with your one credit clear.

It's very possible to survive Yamame going 'too low' during the 1st non. Usually, you slowly stream the red bullets amongst the blue, but if she moves down too low then you'll want to move a lot further left/right once the red bullets start moving towards you. Try to move far enough so that you are away from the lowest spawning red bullets.

Watch UKT's WRs with ReimuA and B for examples of when Yamame goes 'too low' and how he deals with it.

It is more fitting to say Phantasm is the true Extra stage in PCB, difficulty-wise. PCB's Extra is really all too easy for an extra stage compared to the others. It exists for the plot progression instead.

My two cents. PCB Phantasm and other Extras fall in between Normal and Hard. A few might be as difficult as Hard, but not quite. Objectively, the Extra stages are shorter, yet give a generous amount of resources. Additionally, some of the spellcards/nonspells are trivial or memo.

I'll have to settle with ending ST1 at a staggeringly shitty score of 15M, but it still won't stop me from restarting ST2 and 3 over and over again arrrrgh. ;_;

I miss when I was completely oblivious to tournament level play, I never reset unless I died on ST1, but now I reset as far in as ST5 if the mistake is dumb enough. The entire fun of Touhou is the satisfaction of overcoming a difficult challenge though. I don't think many people have to try to overcome their challenges since they all seem to start out on Lunatic no problem, but I get joy out of properly scoring and actually making it past Stage 3 when going for score.

The real challenge comes from being able to endure playing through the first three stages after you've chipped your way through them, resetting after each scoring mistake and doing light experimentation with each credit played before you restart. It's been a really long time since I've seen past Stage 5 in any Touhou game, but I must perfect the first four stages, no matter how much it makes me hate the game.

Pay attention to the sound made when Ran releases a wave--there's a point where if you move at the last second to dodge a wave, you'll actually be dodging the one behind it too.

Nice. damn, I always start with survival routes then slowly build the chains up and it's just not happening with my st4 - I guess I'd need to totally reroute to get the big good chains.

> and chain the all of 1-1 through 1-3 no problem, now I just barely make it past the midboss each time.
I'm sure that it's only possible to chain up to the 1-1 midboss. You can chain the whole of 1-2 though (that's the main thing I'm working on now, it is extremely difficult). Again with 1-3 there's too much space after the midboss and I think there's just too much empty space to chain it, majority of the score (going by PMTs run) seems to come from the huge cancels.

> Now I'm constantly just restarting and getting frustrated if I break the 1-2 or 1-3 chain, which is now 80% of the time.
You're not going for your high score yet? I mean you must have more practice to do in the later stages as well. Unless breaking the chain kills you (and it does this to me a bunch since I get so disappointed) just play on til the end.

A-L and B-S for when I feel like dicking around. My big issue is resetting after any chain drop, since I instinctively stop trying once that happens. I believe the maximum amount of hits is indeed at the midboss of 1-1, 190 in total. You can hit up to 90 hits after the midboss, but I never really attempt it since I'm usually trying to brute force my way back to 1-2 or 1-3, whichever breaks the chain first.

Right now I'm working on personal goals, like 60M before the end of the year, or a loop before 2015. I should make it a goal to never restart even if I feel like the run is hopeless. For all I know, I could have gotten 60M on one of my better 1-4 reset runs, but probably not unless I played exceptionally well in 1-5 and 1-6. I moved to the left a little here and dropped an otherwise decent chain, but at least I'm getting consistent with making it to the bullet canceller. The run was pretty much done by 1-1 when I dropped it at 107HIT, but I wanted practice in 1-2 anyway.

I'll try hitting 30M or 40M instead since I also can't see myself hitting the second loop since I always die in 1-5 or 1-6 due to lack of practice. Not in a 1-ALL run where I chain, no. I'm pretty sure I would have gotten it in one of my NMNB effort all the way to 1-4 runs, but then again maybe not. The most I've gotten out of a, "fuck it I'm not chaining today" is 15M or so. I put down absolutely no effort into restarting or chaining and just blasted everything.

I've never finished a run when I'm attempting to chain anything past the first stage. Dying/bombing or dropping chain before 1-5 is pretty much an instant reset, there is no reason to need bombs on anything before there.

Now that I think about it, my DDP practice consists of me starting up a run, playing to 1-3 if I'm lucky, and then resetting. It felt like I was going to get a decent 1-ALL score after I was consistently making it to 1-4 without resetting, but now I'm back to 1-2 and 1-3 resets. moedan, and it's easier than easy IN.
it's not even for stg beginners. i'd say it's for video game beginners. it's that easy.

That sounds even worse- you should at least have some sort of survival route drilled in to fall back on to keep going, and it really is just plain inefficient to restart all the time (you lose the chance to immediately practice what's after the point you've restarted from, save Stage Practice). Once you have a mental draft of a full run (that you've played, not just someone else's superplay) then you can work on making your complete run more like the super one...you can just simply complete the game already, right?

Players significantly better than whoever it is you're talking about use training modes, so your point is... pointless.

I can 1cc my main game pretty consistently when I'm not resetting. I haven't bothered with a 1cc of DDC Normal/Hard past the initial first day clear, either because of a dumb scoring mistake in one of the earlier stages, or needing to bomb something easy, losing out on a good deal of score because of it. Thankfully, bombing is usually a good thing in DDC since it doesn't shit all over your score and survival chances unlike some other games I play. I just reset when I use an unplanned bomb or die to something easy. I could probably read off that full extent of the law screen from DDP since I have to read it after each reset.

I use training mode in DOJBLEX and I still suck. I'm not sure if you can gain an overall skill by doing training modes, but I've never seen any improvements in my STG skill after doing training mode. In the one game, yeah, but I never feel like I'd be able to hop into a 2hu and start LNB/WR everything like some people do.

I heard that DOJBLEX's training mode was bad, though. Regardless, "general skill" transfers from game to game no matter how you play. It's all about time investment, after all.

I'm pretty sure it's terrible because there's no rank options and it starts at 0 rank no matter what. On a full run, you won't be missing or bombing until the second loop at least, so it's pretty fucking worthless.
