Style over substance.

I don't get this smartphone fad at all, just get a regular mobile telephone for two bucks and it does the exact same thing.

I don't know, I have a cheap phone and its battery lasts a bit less than a whole week, while I have to see people whose smartphone's battery last barely 4 hours.

I bought my first smartphone recently. It's a Windows Phone, which is kind of silly, but it was cheap and is good enough to browse image/textboards while in bed or on the bus, so I'm happy!

Hey, me too.

But what was really scary was all the stuff I had to opt-out of. Every application and menu seems to have some message the first time, like, "We want to collect information about your phone."

I am not too worried about the forced synchronisation of my contacts/calendar. In fact, it could be useful. The other stuff is kind of scary, I agree. I also dislike how only location-tracking 'apps' are allowed to run in the background. I want IRC running 24/7. ;_;

I just turned everything off that I could. I don't have a Microsoft Account or whatever, and I'm not getting one. I think I can still install new apps from an SD card, but if I can't then it's no biggie.

Protip: Don't buy a smartphone with fixed battery cells (Nexus line, for example). If you cannot remove the batteries, you cannot truly turn your phone off, which is exactly what secret services all over the world want.

Very clever, but I have every right to question how a thread is on-topic.
