11386058 No.11386058 [Reply] [Original]

When I lived in Japan, I had these rice paper screens on all my windows. They were nice because they let a lot of light in, but still afforded privacy. Does anyone know how to rig something up like this in the US for cheap?

I'm now back in the States and I'm living in a 1st floor apartment that looks out on my neighbor's front door. I find I'm having to deal with mini-blinds, curtains, etc., and they all either block too much light, or let people see into my unit too easily. I know that Japanese style rice paper window screens are available here, but at specialty stores and for a steep price. I don't really have a full wood-working shop to fabricate them myself either. I've looked into window films, but for various reasons, am not going to go down that route. Is there a cheap way to do this with the resources we have in the States?

>> No.11391733

this is not the 'rice paper' you're looking for but it does the exact thing
i dont remember what it was called exactly, but i googled the description - 'frosted plastic for windows'
https://www.google.ca/search?q=frosted+plastic+for+windows&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.51773540,d.aWM,pv.xjs.s.en_US.jkEW54nYU50.O&biw=1050&bih=1539&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=cP0qUrHONcjyqQGhlIHIBA
it's just a sticky plastic you 'glue' on your window, i used it
you literally buy a roll of this stuff, cut it to the window size, and stick it on your window
