As for the readers' reaction... You would have to take into consideration the current attitudes toward satori (the species) on the surface. According to most canon sources, satori are still strongly disliked. A case would be likely then, that confronted with the true identity of the hypothetical Mary Ann or a Hungry Youkai and told it is, in fact, a satori, the reader would still be slightly dismayed. Something of a "I like this person's writing, but I don't know if I would want to meet her in person" thing. As it is with many real-world writers (I, for one, can't see myself meeting Terry Pratchett, however much I enjoy his works).

OK, so let's say one day you made it into Gensokyo.

You ended up acclimatizing in the Human Village, found steady employment with one of the craftsmen, generally secured a comfortable living place and conditions. So now that you’ve got that done with, you decide to take the risk and try meeting Satori.

You plan out your journey to the Underworld. You secure your transit as much as you can. A part of the trip by a cart, another escorted by Mokou, then part alone, glancing over your shoulder every ten seconds. After long hours you make it into the Underworld. You pass Parsee’s bridge, brave the youkai-infested caves, and finally you arrive at the doorstep of the Palace of the Earth Spirits. This is it. You’re here.

But now comes the kicker. Satori is nothing like you imagined. Nothing like it. She’s rumpled, curt, has a venomous personality, and generally acts rude toward your worn-out self. While she allows you to stay the night in her palace, she shoves all of the host’s duties onto Rin, telling her to attend to your needs, then, herself, leaves without so much as a goodbye and retreats to her room. Rin tries to reason in her owner’s defence, but it is painfully clear Satori simply does not like humans – which you unfortunately are.

How do you tackle this situation?

Rin excused herself to other duties, though not before ensuring you have every comfort you require. (Which you do – you prepared for this trip including drink and food.)

You are safe for the night. But tomorrow you will be forced to take to the road again, the chance of befriending this creature Satori, for whom you have yearned so long, gone for what might be ever.

You must act – now. But how?

Your excursion comes to an unexpected halt as you stop by an apparently insignificant door, though sound is leaking from within through the slit under its frame. There is a rap of footsteps, and presently you are acquainted with a whine of complaining wood so like the cupboard’s you met back in your guest room.

Could you have happened on the dwellings of the unsociable mistress of the house? Your heart gives a flutter, though your brain comes just behind it, arguing despairingly to stay out of her sights yet.
