Futo appears to be mostly based on Mononobe no Moriya, who was Shoutoku Taishi's right hand/closest associate. They were even buried together just like in TD; the mausoleum you see in the backgrounds exists in real life. The name Futo however seems to be taken from Futohime, who was another Mononobe clan member and Moriya's sister. She married Soga no Umako, who incidentally seems to be the biggest influence of Tojiko's character; her personality and her powers seem to be inspired by him. I guess that depends on how you see it. It bothers me slightly though that this story indeed seems to be more based on Japanese history than Touhou canon. I mean TD is obviously based on real historical events but that doesn't mean they're one and the same.

I also think it was kinda dumb to conceive and start working on such an elaborate backstory just before SoPM was released, which would make their facts outdated pretty much right away.

But of course, stories are also meant to entertain above all else. Each to their own how they prefer their stories. Personally I think the more canon influence the better but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate more freely depicted fanworks at all. It's all case-by-case.

They WILL, however, very likely find the faux-archaism disturbing to the overall reading experience, as it creates a sense of discord with the other characters' speech.
