To emphasize that lyrics are an important part of denpa, I'll leave the lyrics of "Märchen Debut" by Abe Nana here.
They're pretty chaotic, did my best to bring that chaos to English.

Backstory: Nana is a new idol who tries _too_ hard to look cute and childish. She says she comes from Usamin star and can communicate with her homeland through radio waves.
She also says she's 17 but she's obviously older. Users at NND poke fun at her with comments like うわキツ (this is hard [to look at]).

Singer: 三宅麻理恵
Composer: ARM
Lyrics: 夕野ヨシミ
Video: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm21560186

"At that moment, a bright light came down from the sky."
"Eh? Who's that? What's that? Who is that!?"
"It's... Nana~!"

"Aahh don't get so creeped out please!"
"Nhn! With the power of Usamin, here comes the Märchen transformation!"
"Carrying dreams and hope in both my ears,
Nana will do her best! V!"

Min min min! Min min min! Usamin! (x3)
Usausausa usamin!

Radio waves: OK! Reception: OK!
Usamin, usamin, glucosamine
Heart successfully connected
Cute! Cutie! Cuticle! (Cu!)

Singing: OK! Dancing: OK!
Usamin, usamin, provitamin
Even though I'm like this, I'm an idol all right
Heart wave! *bzzzt*!!

Usamin, Usamin
Takes one hour by train
Usamin, REM sleep!
"Ah...ah this isn't Usamin star!
I missed the stop!"

"One, Two, Nana!"

With Usamin's power
Märchen transformation
I love you everyone
Love love love you! Uh! *baam*!!

Inside Usamin's heart
It's *thump-thump* sparkling!
They're my real feelings
"Ah~ha! Lovely 17 year old! V!"
It's that throbbing I love so much, you know!

"One two! Ready? Go!"

Min min min! Min min min! Usamin! (x3)
Usausausa usamin!

Full power: OK! Smile: OK!
Usamin, usamin, dopa-dopamine
One day I'll reach the top
Lovin'! Lovely! Lovelymin!

Vocals: OK! Acting: also OK!
Usamin, usamin, scopolamine
One day I'll become an anime protagonist
Moon wave *bzzzt*!!

Usamin, usamin
I have stamina for one hour
Usamin, getting kind of dizzymin...!
"Still, I'm forever 17 years old,
so I can still keep going!"

"One, Two, Nana!"

(repeat chorus)
"Ah~ha! It's a girl's secret! V!"
It's that throbbing I love so much, you know!

"Say, Producer... If you were to know Nana's real appearance,
you'd still love me? Just kidding!"

*thump-thump*! *thump-thump*!
*thump-thump*! *thump-thump*!

"One more time? One more time!"

The words can be used interchangeably but probably when someone says Denpa song he's most probably talking about over the line moe songs (denpa aesthetic), while Denpa-kei I've seen it's mostly used for talking about genuinely crazy characters, music, stories, etc.

ひななた - お気の毒ですがすべて仕様です。

"This story begins the morning you reached your 16th birthday.
It's not like your cute childhood friend went to wake you up,
nor a king asked you to save the world or anything like that.
Just as always, you just came to school again."

It's your feature, it's your feature
The fact that you aren't popular is your feature. I feel so bad for you!

"As always you took your seat in the back of the classroom.
And from your side, I will observe you again today."

You put on your school uniform, and you only care about studying.
Without ever talking to anyone, you always eat your lunch alone.
Where is your party? What's your level now?
You look like you're always standing alone on a wasteland, that's why I'm worried about you!

It's your feature, it's your feature
The fact that you're always alone is your feature. It's your feature, I'm a little worried!

Who are you exactly? Where did you come from in the first place?
I don't even know where did you appear from, and you suddenly disappear without saying anything.
No one is going for you, but I can only watch from afar.
Once in a while you look at me, but my feelings won't get through.

It's your feature, it's your feature
The fact that you're thickheaded is your feature. That's your feature, but I won't give up!

"After observing you today, the day is over.
But now I get the feeling that I understand you a little bit."

It's your feature, it's your feature
The fact that you're not popular is your feature, it's your feature, I feel so bad for you!
I understand, I understand
I understand all your real feelings, I understand, and I feel bad for you!

Why don't you realize!? I'll forcefully and quickly push forward.
Because I won't hold back anymore, at any cost I'll make you turn back to me.
I can't stop my feelings anymore! I'll make you accept them all!
I feel bad for you but everything is your feature. But let me tell you: I'm your bug.

FLAC should always be used if ever compared to MP3. The principle reason is that the Free Lossless Audio Codec is completely free of restrictive patents unlike MP3 which is proprietary. The improved audio quality is mearly a bonus, as freedom is more important.
If you prefer a "lossy" audio codec, don't use MP3 in that case either, use OGG Vorbis which is also completely free from dangerous patents.

Really? MOSAIC.WAV have a pretty unique style and they're one of the pioneers in this whole thing. I could say the same for Team Dmp and Shaking Pink, all their songs sound the same to me. But again, tastes.

Really? I found most of ちぃむdmp's albums to be rather lackluster in the sense they only have a couple of good songs, except for 電波LOVE (which had plenty of decent songs to go around).
I love the hell out of ななひら and ココ, but Shaking Pink doesn't do it for me.

I guess it has something to do with the actual songs than the artists/groups themselves, but I find MOSAIC.WAV songs to be better composed overall. Not to mention I really enjoy the variety of lyrics and themes as well.
The ones you mentioned are cute as HELL, but most of their songs seem to be missing something.

That said, I disagree with that anons claim that Mosaic.wav are particularly bad. I don't like them as much as dmp or IOSYS, but they're still pretty neat. Shaking Pink doesn't really do it for me either.

I think we can take from this that different people might have different tastes.

>I found most of ちぃむdmp's albums to be rather lackluster in the sense they only have a couple of good songs
I have to agree, and honestly I thought the same of most ポヤッチオ works. I like their style and the singers are cute, but I need some variety and something more than just "cute". That said, yeah some songs are good. I still love 魔女っ子dmp☆, 専属メイド☆宣言 and KAGAYAKE★乙女 to this day.

>I guess it has something to do with the actual songs than the artists/groups themselves
Yeah. Different songwriters work on these albums, compared to MOSAIC.WAV which is always the same songwriter (Susumu Kayamori). I guess we should start focusing on who's composing the songs instead of just the singers to know what we're getting into.

>I really enjoy the variety of lyrics and themes as well
You're making a good point here, this is one of the main reasons why they don't get old.

>The ones you mentioned are cute as HELL, but most of their songs seem to be missing something
It's hard to spot. Originality? Craziness? Shock value/freshness? In my case, I got into denpa songs years ago because I love the feeling of getting brainwashed by a song. In the recent doujin scene I feel like 33.turbo and Odenpa Studio get that right.

Anyway don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't enjoy them, I do, but I feel like we're getting stuck with the same 4-5 doujin artists here. We can also find denpa songs in eroge, games, anime, (chika) idols, old doujin albums, bonus tracks, etc. We just have to open up more, denpa encompasses many things, not just "those 4 doujin circles".

Hope I didn't sound too bitter, I still enjoy everything, just hoping maybe someone thinks it over.

Every MOSAIC.WAV fan would probably suck dicks to get that full song by now. I don't think I've heard a word from them about it.

But since they made that song specifically for that OVA (as opposed to the OP), I'm guessing only King Records and ufotable (the producers of the OVA) have the rights to release the full song in a CD, but since it's been a year already it looks like they abandoned Naoko-san as a project so it seems improbable. (Hey, do you wanna have sex?)

I get horny in class, I can feel it pulsing
Even girls want to do it sometimes!
I have confidence in my fellatio, and sometimes I get horny while doing it
I want you to throw your love onto my face

Aah, love is more than just a word
It has to feel good because it's a beautiful thing

I want your hot thing into my special place
Just come here and stick it in aah~
Don't make that face, let's not forget about this moment
And let's just do something that feels good

It's Sunday and I'm horny, because I haven't done it for 3 days you know
There's no way I can control myself anymore
Just leave the sexual postitions to me, today is a safe day
So I want you to come all inside me

Aah, love is just a cheesy word from dramas
Leave that aside because I want to do together things that feel good

I feel good so I want you to feel good inside my special place too
Don't make that face, love isn't something you put into words
In this moment I just want you to hold me tight

Ah, that was great
But it's not enough

Because I want you to make me feel better and better

I want your hot thing into my special place
Just come here and stick it in aah~
Don't make that face, let's not forget about this moment
And let's just do something that feels good

And...Mousou Koukan Nikki by Otome Shinto.
Kind of painful lyrics again.
Girl worried about her fantastic stories she writes in her diary instead of staying in touch with her real classmates.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWGAMjTwUZM
---
There's a hierarchy in class
It's not like anyone made it up
It just came together one day as:
Top tier, middle tier, bottom tier
All from lower-middle to higher-middle
But I'm going Wah! Kyah! every day in the delusional world
We don't really want to become top tier
We're the 14-year-old girls of the middle tier!

(chorus 1)
Delusions are my special skill and hobby
Today's boyfriend is from Greece
This is the 23rd delusion exchange diary
I have to write my reply in it!

I've already given up on reality
But I still believe in miracles
I don't care if it hurts
We're the girls from the middle tier!

(verse)
Today I went to the violin room
and you were practicing some Schubert!
This time let's win the contest
with your piano skills!

"I'll dedicate it to you" you said
That's the hat trick you decided on
Seeing you overcoming your pain
I couldn't stop my tears

In the time break I look at the dusk by the window
I'm sure that boy of my dreams is looking too!

(chorus 2)
Delusions are my special skill and hobby
I don't have time for club activities
I don't need the real world, I dream inside my dreams
but I have to go home soon

We'll exchange diaries again today
with the perfect you
Delusions make me feel fluffy
Middle tier 14-year-olds
Middle school girls

"The top tier classmates
Today they're wearing make-up and polished nails too
They can talk with the boys so naturally
I would be lying if I said I don't admire them
Since you know, the teachers like them too
They can talk with just anyone while looking at them in the eye
I usually wonder if I could ever be like them
But sometimes I feel like something isn't right..."

(verse)
Things like walking and laughing together
or going to the bathroom together
It sounds like a pain in the butt
I don't think I can handle them

But here it's a disaster
They're all fighting over me
My upperclassman, the rich guy,
and the musician are having a big fight

(chorus 3)
Re-reading manga with friends
That line was so cool!
They're totally different from the guys in my class!
And their hair is all silky!

Don't ever tell anyone
about my delusion diary
What kind of love should I imagine tomorrow?

[repeat chorus 1]

"Eroge song" wouldn't be of much use as a genre since a song made for an eroge doesn't exactly necessitate any stylistic pattern distinct from denpa/moe song/general pop.

That said, "anisong" is still used as a genre, and it would still be useful in describing function, I guess.

>> No.11368868

It's an umbrella term. Kind of like tags.

For example, Os-Uchuujin's genre is rock, but you can use the umbrella terms "anison" and "denpa" to categorize it.

Denpa song just means lunatic song, it's just a way to describe a song.

I suggest listening to songs instead of albums first. Go check the examples for all artists in that page. Artists that make "denpa only albums" are very few, most denpa songs are parody/joke songs found in non-denpa albums, singles, games, or anime. You're better off searching for songs.

But if you really need an album I would suggest UNDER17 best albums, MOSAIC.WAV recollection, ワァオ! ハイパー電波チャン and U - ULTRA☆U -GALAXY-. Or if you want something more brainfucking I would suggest ぱんださんようちえん, ave;new project albums and Millirobo.beta.

takeshi0406 wrote a post about us. We're being watched guys.

In summary
- He's happy we linked to him
- He noticed the mediafire links, but he's being open-minded and he says that it's just too hard for us to buy Japanese music, therefore he suggests bandcamp for artists to publish their music to foreigners.
- He's also surprised there are English translations, although he mentions "Marchen Change" and "Sex Friend Beat Punk" as having "shallow" lyrics.
- He's also surprised to see that the English wikipedia article for "denpa song" is more complete than the Japanese one. He blames Japanese for getting angry over what's denpa or not, so the Japanese article just doesn't grow; while we seem more relaxed about it.

if more denpa artists published music through bandcamp, i would definitely buy it
as it is i can barely afford to buy cds easily available in america let alone import doujin cds
but i like to support less popular artists and i've bought some foreign music through bandcamp and would definitely be happy to get the chance to buy more (that would also mean more denpa in flac yeehaw)

lel. I don't see why you're searching for talent in denpa songs, denpa songs are parody songs from underground akiba, there's absolutely no intention to make it sound complex or virtuoso; this is like trying to find good writing in a moege or nukige. Some of them have it, but it's not the point.

Sill, in the scene there are very good artists and many songs have actually good composition. Maybe as piano arranges you can hear it:

Denpa is more complex than your run-of-the-mill pop music. It has rhythmic changes/additions, key shifts, awkward tonalities and consonant/dissonant dynamics, and lots of texture comprised of layers of cascading melodies. It usually surprise in its progressions (e.g. I think the next note will go down, but it goes up instead; it suddenly slows or glitches).

Seriously, actively listen to it sometime; some denpa songs are very tightly composed as evidenced by quick tonal shifts.

>Also, if you want to compliment something, don't say that it's better than something bad.
Are you aware of how broad pop music is? I was rather unspecific. I was referring to general plebian music both vernacular and commercial. "Pop music" as a whole, including genres like rock, R&B, dance music, folk, etc pales in comparison to the complexity of denpa. Even some classical works do not possess the complexity of denpa simply because they lack the self-awareness; aesthetically, it may be more composed, "artful", or whatever, but it does not operate on the self-reflexive, multiple levels of denpa. Denpa is music of the postmodern age, at times seeming to question what musicality even means in its irony and parody and pastiche.

That said, conflating "complexity" with quality is stupid, and this is what it seems like you're doing. I have not said any of these genres are superior. He mentioned "complexity" so I talked about that.

Nobody did, "your" is just an expression, he isn't implying he listens to it.

>if you want to compliment something, don't say that it's better than something bad
When did he say that? I'll quote it again for you:
>Denpa is more complex than your run-of-the-mill pop music.

Complex doesn't mean good. Music is art, not a science, people like it for the message it conveys. Complexity is just one of those messages. There are others. Besides, I think we should hear your definition of "complex"; I'd say the themes behind denpa are complex enough.

I'll summarize the denpa definition for you:
- over-the-top/excessive/creepy
- off-key singing
- addictive, poisonous, brainwashing
- otaku-ish themes
- delusions, telepathy, or madness
- nonsensical, weird, chaotic, and/or repetitive lyrics

I don't think we're looking for musical complexity here but for a special message we're all attracted to and obsessed with.

It's not the themes so much, but the music realizing itself as something within a larger framework. Denpa draws from symbols outside of the music and mashes them together in a seeming self-parody. In terms of compositional complexity, it isn't anywhere near jazz or most classical, but it's the intent that creates the "complexity" I'm referring to. It's not often that you hear self-referential music. As such, Denpa should be appreciated within its larger framework of otaku culture as simultaneous response and reflection of that.

Think about it, a lot of denpa only makes sense when you're familiar with the signs of otaku culture. Compared it to "self-contained" genres or songs where the art is appreciated in itself. As far as I know, this has only started occurring recently. I see it in hip-hop and other "sample" genres where the meaning and art comes primarily from reference.

>> No.11379893

Yeah that's what I meant by "theme", the "intent" word works better.

Yes, my mistake. I had meant "popular music" in general, but used pop music as the example because it combines many popular music elements. Sorry for the confusion.

Also denpa is more than "novelty music" when we look at the aesthetic and culture surrounding it. Of course, parody songs and such are not new at all, but denpa IS new. It's something that can only exist in this 21st century technological age.

>>11381412
>not from a love of otaku culture but for its surreal/ironic/avant-garde novelty value.
Those two are not mutually exclusive, especially when otaku culture is extremely self-aware. The excessive, ironic aspect of denpa is the most fascinating thing about it, in my opinion, because it opens yet another door into the otaku psyche.

The /mu/ types you're referring two are too busy jerking off to their "vaporwave" or whatever ironic microgenre is currently trendy. I'm pretty sure they want nothing to do with this other than maybe to blast it around because it's funny.

>> No.11383841

How difficult it is for the singer to reproduce the overexagerated voices used in denpa? Because i'ts kind of ironic how forced and exagerated voices like the ones used in classical music, specially opera, were the rule only 100 years ago and nowadays, there are people that make fun of the voices used in denpa who have can fall in the same degree of stylization.

The voices in denpa are beautiful because they are extremely stylized voices, made to fit and ideal of beauty; wether this ideal is good or bad, that's another issue. Also, if it takes training to do those voices, and this is what I asked the question at the beggining, they have value by thenselves.

Not to mention they can be quite beautiful, but that falls in the subjective field.

i have a question for anyone who has experience using perfect dark
i installed it about 3 days ago, but my unity size won't seem to increase above 26mb, so none of my queued downloads will start
i didn't cap the bandwidth or anything, and it even sometimes goes down to 25mb or 24mb
my internet speeds are generally 700kb/s dl and 100kb/s ul
am i doing something wrong or is my filthy gaijin internet just not enough to do perfect dark?

Doesn't the unity folder have to be like 20 GB or something? My Internet isn't that much faster than yours and I can use PD. Sometimes queued downloads just take forever too.

>> No.11419904

>>11419896
the minimum size you have to reserve for it is 40gb, and that's what i have reserved
it's just not filling up as fast as it should
it did go up to 27mb though
