Japanese film in industry has gone to the dark ages since the old times. A good film or two would come along every now and then, but still doesn't compare against China's half-ass epic films or Korea's soap oprahs. The film industry constantly isolates itself from the international stage all because of self-pity and arrogance. A lot of Japanese want to hold on to the idea that Japanese films are uniquely superior by default, that doesn't "need" to be compare against Hong Kong or Hollywood. Sad, but true. Many Japanese directors are aghast by this. You'll notice most Japanese film these days uses shit lighting as well.
