What makes you guys enjoy them? I feel bringing 2D characters into 3D removes what makes them so enjoyable; the fact that you use your own imagination to fill in the blanks. Also, they are grossly disproportional looking except from certain camera angles like:

It really depends on the performer's body and the mask quality itself. Some masks are incredible, and I feel like bringing the 2D characters into reality my deepest motivation to do so (though I'm far from doing it at the moment and with a lot of problems to solve).

I think the most important part of making the costume look good is getting the correct size mask.

I have seen in many pictures where the mask looks way too big and that to me is what makes it look very artificial and not appealing to me.

Cast it with silicone and FRP please. Don't do with paper machie. It sucks, really.

Also, measure yourself before doing the mask, make paper prototypes, etc. Then sculpt. There's not much secret to it.

No, of course not. I think he kinda imersed the sculpt in silicone, that's why so much silicone. There's a few guides to make master molds of silicone. Several coats of silicone are needed though.

It really depends on your body type and how clever you are with padding, etc. Unless you're super manly you should be able to get away with it somehow.

It depends on several factors: how you pad, your weight, height, how you move, etc...

I'd recommend GKO (http://http://goukaou.blog131.fc2.com)) being a good maker in terms of quality x price. If you trust your abilities, you can get a blank from Nukopan (http://nukopan00.blog115.fc2.com) and work it yourself. These are the current best options available for a westerner from what I know. Imho other makers are not on par quality-wise. Other makers make their products available only in Japan, and that's most of the masks you see in here. It's sad that we aren't able to buy some of those.
