Watching his videos, I've found out that if I ever visited, I'd most likely just walk around old trails or towns taking pictures.

In his recent video (where he talked about the downsides of living in Japan), he did mention that to live in harmony there you had to "give something up", and I didn't quite understand what he meant by that.

So I'm goign to have trouble explaining this, but the slates and paper in the doors is important. Gion was a pleasure district, and at night these paper doors would be lit enough that you could see the shadows of people inside. It was to give the illusion of good times going on in there, without giving away what is going on. Japan is all about the "illusion" of something being more important than the something.

The student group in 2013 lived in Tokyo and Osaka. Every one of them preferred Osaka since the people were a lot nicer, and the prices were more reasonable.

We went into one card shop before, and the hallway leading in was filled with gatchapon...all of them were related to H series in one way or another. It's amusing to watch kids try to get the gatchapon to work without using money, then they see some gaijin watching them and the get scarred off.

Here is a shot of something neat. These trucks play music as they go down the road, since the roads are super tight in residential neighborhoods. In some places that truck barely fits, and you have to stand next to a light pole so it doesn't hit you. Our group was supposed to be in one of the buildings on OGU where we could speak English, but they ran out of classrooms, and we ended up in the international building. If we had to see our CET rep, we had to ask her in Japanese if we could use English, and she would shut the door so we could talk. It was weird.

I wouldn't say it's cheaper. Shops always charge their own premium and at the end of the day if you buy something new then you might as well go online to get it if you want the cheapest prices.
I don't think the prices are that different like if you get a $500 doll you might save about 5% by going to Osaka instead of Tokyo. It usually costs around $50 to get the cheapest nighbus one way between the cities so if I roll with those estimates say you're in Tokyo, there and back you spend $100 travel costs and so you would need to spend $2000+ to recoup your "losses" for travel costs. And about 5k to make it interesting in terms of profit/savings but if you got 5k to spend then you don't really need that little extra.

For comparisons on non-new stuff I once saw a dengeki collab figure that had a limited production of like 1000 and was being sold in Mandarake in Akiba for about $200 unopened and I think that is a pretty fair price whether opened or not. The same applies for Wonder Festival figures that can go for anywhere between a +10% to +100% markup in Akiba with some places giving a +500% markup. The prices really aren't that different in Osaka except maybe they don't have as many shops selling one or two items for tourism prices. On the other hand I once got some nice hard to find rubber Touhou keychain things for about $20 or $30 each in Namba.

So I wouldn't go to Osaka to save on otaku goods but maybe to get a better selection and to visit the town and experience the atmosphere.

Tokyo prices really aren't that bad. You just have to know where to go. Also the price of a melonpan at the FamiMa or the price of a play on the Arcade machines is still the same. It just depends on what you're doing I guess?

For example if you go to a nightclub in Tokyo or any similar event you will probably pay $30 minimum entry fee and $5 per drink. But you can still get a beef bowl with rice and unlimited water for $5.

I'm a little divided on which I prefer between Osaka and Tkyo but I think I really do prefer Tokyo because of Shinjuku, Ikebukuro (otome road yay) and Nakano Broadway.

More Taiko. My memory is absolute shit when it comes to names, so I can't remember what this festival is called. I actually managed to get lost following this. I eventually wandered into a train station where the ticket master guy helped me to figure out how to get home, and also showed me that the train names can change at night. If I had my map, I would give an example...

There were a lot of high school girl bands at the festival...

I have to admire Japanese students for having to wear some ridiculous outfits in the summer. Girls in their skirts and big ass coats, in dark navy blue. Boys in black long sleeve and dress pants...(at least the students near the high school where we lived)

Safe enough. Two of the girls in our group were followed a few times at night though. So...not as safe for women?

If you are worried about Yakuza, or violence groups, don't worry too much. Yakuza are chill as hell with foreigners. I was followed once and had a group of guys laughing about how they could push me on a nearby train track, and no one would care because Americans die all the time. Then they veered off towards an arcade...Good times. My take away from that is that they are big on talk, small on action.

We left on April 29th and came back May 30th.

It was the first Faculty led trip by our university in a long, long time, so we were a test group to see if it was a good idea, so our stay was limited The downside was we had almost no time to do a lot of things. The upside is it was cheap as hell, under 2K for some of us. This years group went for 6 weeks, and lived in Tokyo and Osaka. They also studied Japanese and theater, unlike our group which only studied theater.

The thing about Japan is, none of us had culture shock GOING to Japan, but we had massive culture shock coming home.

I mean that you get used to people being nice to you, even if it is only at face value. Airport security in Japan is pretty awesome. Arriving is quick, and leaving is quick.

Returning to America, you contend with people being, for the most part, stuck up bastards. Our first experience back in America was watching TSA agents yell at Japanese people who didn't have their customs slips out. One guy got grabbed, and pulled over to the side with an agent yelling in his face, and shoving a sample of the slip in the poor guys face because he didn't have it out. Immediately following that, another TSA agent went into one of the girls from our trips bags and pulled out some glass hairpins wrapped in newspaper and cloth. After examining them, he just threw them down next to her bag in the little bins, and broke them. You could hear them crunch when he did =\

You just get used to people not being complete assholes.

That sounds more like a problem with America than anything else.

The only time I had something thrown away was when leaving Japan and it was just a drink despite the fact you can buy drinks after the security checkpoint.

In UAE they can be strict until there are huge lines and then they just pile everything through the scanners and shuffle people through.

In EU countries they just let you get through with no fuss and just randomly pick people out to search. If they find you with something weird like doujinshi they will make a fuss or call in specialists but usually let you keep it all. Generally a mix of being very PC and mildly passive aggressive.

In Autralia they seem more like the EU but they will confiscate anything they're not sure about.

In the UK they will be pretty strict about regulations too and may or may not verbally treat you like some sort of criminal. But that's about it.
