Read about how squids reproduce. It's pretty weird and erotic.

But squid can be quite cute too! Take this eight-arm squid, for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylAlHoS6wzo

You can clearly see that the poor thing is terrified of the ROV, and it even approaches the alien object in a characteristic defensive posture - its arms are spread out to expose the hooks on their surfaces, hopefully to discourage the potential predator from striking its soft, fleshy mantle tissue (while you only see the harmless-looking brush, the ROV is indeed quite large and intimidating to this small squid). It then springs back and momentarily appears to attack the ROV, but its intentions are quite different: Each arm of Octopoteuthis is equipped with several fracture points, from which the appendage can break away with ease (indeed, captured animals seldom have a full set of intact arms). By striking the ROV with its arms, the squid generates enough traction to leave an arm or two on its "attacker", which then wriggle like a lizard's tail and generate bright flashes of light in an attempt to provide enough distraction while the squid makes its escape. Having decided that its autotomic defense isn't enough to deceive the relatively gigantic ROV, the terrified squid also leaves a cloud of ink for good measure.

So you can think of Octopoteuthis deletron as a shy little girl who reflexively drops her arms whenever she is surprised, running away while onlookers are still trying to shake off the flashing, disembodied squid appendages clinging on them - and even if you're familiar enough with the poor girl, the arms are so easy to regenerate that she may autotomize them on purpose and insist on feeding them to you as a gesture of affection. Her "elder sister" (Taningia, the only other genus in the family), though, is a vicious predator that can reach over two meters in length and uses brilliant flashes of light to confuse and disorient its prey before going in for the kill, so it'd probably be better keep her happy and content.
