Hello /jp/,
I wanted to get in to this whole Touhou thing. My questions is - Where do I start? There's just so much Touhou related stuff, it's hard to divide the important things from the unimportant.

>> No.11261591

Start with doujins the games are shit

>> No.11261595

1. Play one of the games, PCB is a good choice.
2. Check the wiki, http://en.touhouwiki,net, for any information you need. There's a links page there too which connects to further sites.

PCB or EoSD. EoSD if you want to get the hang of it and worry about scoring gimmicks later.

Or this.

So I don't need the story of the first 6?

The first 5 are PC98 games - you can't play them without an emulator, and they're not connected to the continuity that starts with TH6.
There's four main story arcs in the Touhou games. TH 1-5 (Mima/wtfamIdoing arc), the PC98 era where Zun was experimenting and learning how to make games; 6-9 (Yukari/Lunarians arc), where the series really got started and came into its own; 10-13 (Moriya/religion arc), where the stories get more complex and interwoven between the games, and now with 14 arriving there's heralding of a new arc beginning.

Thank you! I will start with title 6.

The game itself doesn't explain who the characters are, where the hell they are, why they are shooting lasers at each other and why they can do that at all. That information is usually in special txt file in the game's folder, but it's usually untranslated (and is most likely to be missed anyway if you are not aware of its existence).

6th game is just not good for starting with.
Unresponsive controls. You need a 3-rd party tool to fix it. And holy shit I hate how slow Reimu is in this game.
Shitty UI - no hitbox indicator in focused mode, spellcard's health is not separated, no enemy indicator at the bottom of the screen, no fast restart in menu.
Randomness. Sometimes you're walled and you cannot do anything about it.
Rank system. Game punishes you for playing good.
This game introduced the spellcard systems, but 80% of non-spells are harder and/or have more complex and prettier patterns. And no special gimmicks whatsoever: either micro-dodging or simplest streaming.
Unfitting music. This game has lots of great themes, but ZUN had no experience how to incorporate them into the game. Stage 1 theme slowly fades out, Rumia apears and suddenly TARARARA TARARARA!!!!
Shitty graphics. Yes, even for a touhou game.

Start with 7th or 8th game (or even 10th/11th). If you like them, you'll return to 6th one day anyway. But 6th game can seriously ruin your first impression.

I can't think of a single non-spell in eosd that is difficult unless you're counting stage portions

Play them all, pick the one you like the best and play it. Worry about details later.

Are you refering to the prologue?

Just tried the 6th, and it's not as bad as you make me think it is.

>Are you refering to the prologue?
Yes. As well as character profiles, e.g. http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Rumia#Official_Profiles and others. But you're probably supposed to read those only after you've beaten the boss to avoid spoilers.
>Just tried the 6th, and it's not as bad as you make me think it is.
That's good to hear.

and once you're done playing all the games and completed the ZUN-Mangas, you need to visit these 3 pages at least daily:
- NicoVideo ( search for 東方 )
- Pixiv ( search for 東方 )
- Touhouwiki.net

You'll slowly get sucked into the music and artwork of the series. THEN you can start with the whole fanon doujins and stuff.

Scoring is more important in eosd than any other game (aside from pofv) because you get lives from it.

Download them all, play them in order.

Fuck no.

Just let him get the vsync patch and let him play them in order. IN will give him bad habits and he'll get used to the absurdly big death-bomb window.

And you don't even need hitbox indicator. Reimu's ribbon on her back works the same. And he shouldn't care for score if it's his first time playing.

And I can send you some replays, tertiary.
Fixed 60fps, 0.X% slowdown rate.

6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 9.5th installment use old engine have comparable input lag. Start with the tenth (MoF) or later. Story is nonexistent, this is not an RPG. People skips dialogue all the time, and it's disrupting to read them while playing. Just visit the touhouwiki for the transcription.
