So my little cousin is really into AKB, mainly the girls themselves, not the songs. She said one of her favorite idols is Matsui Jurina from SKE.

How should I go about getting merchandise or items about AKB/SKE/this Jurina girl? Should I get CDs? Photos? Magazines? What are the recommended stores or routes? Is there anything in particular about Matsui Jurina that I should pay attention to?

I am in the US and I can proxy any item, though I'd prefer not paying out the wazoo.

It's a gift, so I don't think it'll be too bad to get a duplicate since she can easily regift to friends. She's a high school student from an all-girls school, so it should be easy.

Did you mean Sakura? Murashige seems to be further back for most of the performance while Sakura is next to Mio.

That's the fans.
It's traditional for not just AKB fans, but idol fans in general, to shout and do small gestures along with the idols' performances.
The "mix" is a chant that's been used before AKB, but was popularized by AKB wotas. The mix is usually shouted at the beginning of the song, and the wotas have the timing worked out from basically previous performances, and from watching others. The mix is usually shouted at the beginning of a song and during long instrumentals. There's also other shouts that wotas do at certain intervals, and a lot of calling members' names. The hand motions and arm waving are coordinated too.

Well, it's more the opposite. Girls from rich families don't have to worry too much about finding a stable, predictable income quickly, and can instead have their parents pay their singing + dancing classes and support them to tons of idol auditions, to entertain themselves working as an idol while they can. To some degree it's also a rich girl past time, though more recently groups like AKB have been breaking that mold with the "girl next door" image.

Idols are plenty these days and only so many can succeed, so getting rich like the top idols isn't guaranteed, and their careers only last so long anyway. Families in tighter financial situations would probably rather encourage their girl to do find an ordinary part-time job or focus on school to create a stable career. It's a bit different for younger girls who can't do regular work yet, though, since in their case any idol income would be extra for the parents... some of whom abuse that (see case Kago for example, or your average junior idols).

To add one obvious Nogizaka righ girl, Erika-sama. Besides her aura, her many hobbies are high-class (ballet, piano etc.) and I suppose her dad must be quite important in his company to be sent abroad to Düsseldorf for years.

Shimazaki Haruka’s photobook, “Paruru Komaru”, has sold 28 thousand copies in its first week, capturing first place in the Oricon photobook ranking. It is also #2 in the overall book ranking for Oricon.

The photobook which features Shimazaki Haruka travelling around the 5 cities where AKB48 will be performing their dome tours, has done quite well considering sales tend to suffer after the general elections.

Once again in two parts, this is what I have for shows. I thought about just roughly translating from the Japanese wikipedia or copypasting from S48's wiki, but they often don't give the 'sense' of what a show is all about. If people feel I have anything wrong please say.

Variety

AKBINGO!: As mentioned above it is the main AKB variety show which has the primary aim of showing off the members. The episodes range from lie detector tests, to games of dodgeball with forfeits.

Shuukan AKB: Shuukan was for a long time the 'Number 2' AKB variety show, slightly lower production values and less well known members. It ended in late 2012.

HaKaTa Hyakkaten: HKT48's flagship variety show, an AKB48 member will visit the studio and the HKT members have to convince them to choose them as their favourite

Nogizakatte Doko (NogiDoko): Nogizaka46's primary variety show, all in studio with a variety of tasks

NOGIBINGO!: Nogizaka's answer to AKBINGO! (or as TV Tokyo themselves admit, a shameless cash-in which is cheap because it can use the same studio), similar in many ways to AKBINGO! and hosted by the infamous Ijiri Okada.

Ariyoshi AKB Kyowakoku: Popular TV personality Ariyoshi Hiroiki is has the role of 'president' and the various members who appear each week perform various tasks to impress him. Co-hosted by Kojima Haruna, and frequently used as a method of showcasing AKB's 'Kenkyusei' or trainees.

Majisuka Gakuen: Cute Japanese schoolgirls fight one another is more ore less the synopsis of this show.
