Sure they have instances, but you don't HAVE to do them, so there are literally people playing MMOs now days that NEVER party and play it like a single player game. Partying up is an outdated mechanic only good for instances or when you need higher communication level. The problem with mmos is while everything mmo related has "advanced", communication has completely stayed the same. There's still a text box where you type in text for others to read.

Sure voip is more common now, but it's too personal and usually requires setup and not everyone has a microphone and it's usually restricted to small groups for proper communication and not to mention the issue of everybody speaking over each other which really isn't an issue in real life because of facial and social cues thats completely absent in online voice features.

There was a difference in being good enough that you could solo, or rounding your build off so you weren't particularly weak in any areas so you could level anywhere.

People who specialized builds typically either partied up, because it was either a glass cannon build or full defense.

This is where people started taking "roles" too seriously and thought partying was required like "THIS CLASS HAS TO TANK, THIS ONE DPS, THIS ONE HEAL, EVERYBODY GO" instead of taking the time to learn about how the mechanics actually work, and come up with something on their own.

I liked dfo because it allowed you to be a solo player but partying up wasn't a drag and there weren't faggy roles that people had to fill. It also wasn't a spamfest and you can easily tell the difference between a shitty player trying too hard and a good one who calculates all his moves.

I was the top priest on the server, even with my Holy Light build. I could out-damage those built for Magnus/Sanctuary, and still damage non-undead things significantly while keeping the party healed.

They didn't lock me down to "just heal that guy" because my class is a priest. My guild knew what kind of build I was running so they could sacrifice damage in other areas and instead focus on more defense or vitality. Hell, we had a whitesmith tank more than our paladins, and an alchemist who would spot heal him with condensed potion throwing if shit started going south and I had to heal everybody else.

Had about 1k players on including merchants, so probably about 600 active players. MVPs were always a clusterfuck but MVP maps were also set to PVP so it was always a minor guild battle right before something spawned.

I loved being on the defense team, stopping other guilds before they interrupt our guys fighting the MVP.

No. You can't buy your items for good prices because there just isn't any on the market, so you end up having to hunt for your own items and just effectively wasting days (sometimes even weeks) for that one card you need to start enjoying the game.

Making money off overupgrading and buying/reselling always works regardless of the number of items on the market. It's just slower on servers with smaller populations.
