On the other hand, being a "soft otaku", a girl who gets the references but doesn't go overboard, is becoming more and more popular. And so, recently, the number of cute girls who identify themselves as "otaku" has been increasing. These days, there certainly seem to be a lot of people thinking, "I want female otaku friends! I want an otaku girlfriend!"

Getting to know an otaku girl is basically more difficult than getting to know an average girl.
This is because there is a high probability that their sociability rating is low, or that they are locked away in their own world. Seldom, you may encounter otaku girls with a high level of sociability, but in such cases it's fine to approach them as you would with any other girl. This time, let's focus on the aforementioned, harder-to-please type of female otaku.

Here's a common example: You go onto mixi or GREE, and find the profile of a girl who's into cosplay. You want to approach them and build a rapport, so you quickly fire off an e-mail or write a message on their wall. Typically, it goes something like this: "I'm also an otaku!" "I also like _____!" to get on the topic.

Up until now, I've recommended bridging common interests from the outset, but this time it's not really a good idea. Be aware that otaku girls are much more cautious and suspicious of strangers than others. Keeping more distance than necessary is a particularly notable characteristic. If, at first contact, an unfamiliar person says "We have the same hobbies!", rather than squeeing with joy, she's more likely to think "This guy is scary!"

So, let's think of what kind of message might appeal to female otaku.

"Hi, nice to meet you! Sorry for suddenly sending you a message like this. [...] ...and so, if you like, come visit my page sometime^^ " This kind of slightly reserved style is more likely to be well received. Even if it's a bit of a long message, otaku girls will be more inclined to read the whole thing; it's another characteristic.

Instead of "Let's be friends!", writing "Please come visit my page too!" is a much more effective approach. Rather than person-to-person interaction as the objective, framing it in a page-to-page perspective is the way to go. By doing this, the probability of her thinking "Ooh, if I visit his page maybe I'll find something interesting?" or "Hmm, maybe we're into the same sort of stuff?" and visiting your page, rises dramatically.

Of course, it'll be necessary to tweak your profile a bit to match the girl's tastes, but you don't need to make any big changes. Something like tacking "*Otaku Welcome!" to your usual profile has a good chance of eliciting a reply such as, "So what do you like?"

After that, it's just a matter of giving up bits and pieces of information, at a rate that will keep her interest, while slowly deepening the friendship as she reciprocates. Naturally, if your profile doesn't fit what she's looking for, getting her interest is going to be difficult, so there's definitely a bit of trial and error involved in finding the best way to write it.

In the end, getting the door open is difficult, but if you manage to find your way in, you'll find a normally cute girl.
