They don't grow back? My aunt has a cat she had declawed and I found the fucker shredding my couch quite effectively.

It probably just had its claws filed down. Declawing a cat is basically the same as denailing you in such a way that your fingernails won't grow back.

Why are people so against declawing?

I do not declaw them. Sometimes they escape and go outside, for a few hours to a few days. With their claws they can at least scare off dogs and other cats.

When you declaw a cat they don't just remove the nail, they cut off the tips of the cat's toes. How could you do that to an animal? Would you like it if they chopped off the ends of your fingers? I didn't think so.

Sometimes I had to trim them because they grew too long and clicked when he walked around.

People say you can't teach cats, but if you yell at them scarily enough when they do bad things, they won't do it anymore.

If it doesn't use the scratching post (i had a cat that just WOULD NOT), try getting an old rough floor mat made of coarse material, not soft stuff. The cat used to scratch that like crazy, but never the post...

Anyway, there's really no need to declaw a cat. People who think declawing cats is okay are the same people who think it's okay for gays to adopt children.
